WEATHER TOOLS What are they? What do they do? THE MOST COMMON WEATHER TOOLS ARE: •Barometer •Psychrometer •Thermometer •Rain Gauge •Weather Vane •Anemometer BAROMETER • Barometers are used to measure air pressure. • Measured in millibars (mb). • Can predict good or bad weather. • High air pressure= good, sunny weather! PSYCHROMETER • Measures humidity (amount of water vapor) in the air • Measured in grams of water per cubic meter of air (g/m3) • Temperature affects humidity THERMOMETER • A thermometer is used to measure temperature. • Can be measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius. RAIN GAUGE • A rain gauge is a weather tool used to collect rain. • Using measurements on the side of the rain gauge, you can see how many inches it rained. • Measured in inches of water. WEATHER VANE • By observing wind vanes, we can know the direction of the wind. • Measured in directional units: North, South, East, West • Knowing the direction of the wind is an important part in predicting the weather. ANEMOMETER • An anemometer measures wind speed • Measured in miles per hour (mph) • How fast it spins determines how fast the wind is blowing
