EXPERIMENT 01 - THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
PROCEDURE:
In the first portion of the experiment, the instructor will show the class a cube to
involve students in answering a question—what is on the bottom? The students will then
propose a hypothesis based on their observations about what information is contained on
the bottom face of the cube. Do not pick up the cube or look at its bottom face.
In the second portion of the experiment, the instructor presents the students with a
second cube and asks them to conduct their initial observations. From the gathered
evidence the students will then create a hypothesis for what is on the bottom face of this
new cube. A subsequent experiment will then be proposed, by the group, as to which corner
of the bottom face will be viewed with the portable mirror. The results of this experiment
will be recorded and from these results a second hypothesis will be proposed (which may
be the same as the original hypothesis).
Finally, students will create a third hypothesis based on the exchange of a single
cube created by each group. This hypothesis will attempt to answer the same question as
before: What is on the bottom of the cube? Students should follow the same rules as in the
previous two cubes. The conclusion of the experiment involves students drawing a picture
of the bottom face of their chosen cube.
