CHEMISTRY
Element Research (Quarter 1 Project)
Due Thurs, 10/7/14 (A day), Fri 10/8/14 (B day)
Name:___________________________
Requirements:
You are a salesperson for a local company with a new client, element _______. You are charged with the task of creating an informative and persuasive
flyer or brochure to distribute to potential customers so they will invest in your element. The customers will want to know all of the logistical facts, but
they also need to be convinced they should purchase your element instead of a rival’s. Be creative in how you will pitch the idea!
Create an Element advertisement flyer or brochure that contains the information listed below for the element you have been assigned. Include your
sources in the proper format on your information sheet.
I am sure you are all pretty familiar with Internet Search engines such as Google, Bing, Dogpile etc. "Googling" your element will likely provide you with
a litany of resources. Your internet site must be reputable site, preferably a college, university, national laboratory or legitimate science site. If I check
your website out and they are advertising "Mind Reading Crystals" and warning about the next Martian invasion do not expect credit. Just like statistics,
you can find a website that will seem to claim anything.
A few recommended element websites to consider are:
http://periodic.lanl.gov/
http://www.chemicool.com/
http://www.chemicalelements.com/
http://www.webelements.com/
http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/
http://www.lenntech.com/periodic-chart.htm
http://www.ucc.ie/ucc/depts/chem/dolchem/html/elem/elem000.html
Advertising flyer or brochure may be typed or handwritten, and must contain all the requested information on a standard (8.5x11) or 11x17 sized piece
of paper (half the size of a normal poster board). Please do not use a full size poster board because there is not enough space in the classroom for it to
be displayed. I would highly recommend considering designing tables to display and organization some of your information.
Use and check off the checklist on this page to ensure you meet all the requirements.
At a minimum, your information sheet must contain the following:
 Name
 Symbol
 Atomic number

1 sentence defining atomic number
 Average atomic mass
 All Isotopes of this element and their abundances in nature (in proper isotopic notation). For each isotope, please write:
 Mass number
 Abundance in nature (The percentage)

Write a 1-2 sentence explanation describing what an isotope is and its importance in relation to Dalton’s Postulates.
 Electron configuration
 Noble Gas Electron configuration
 Lewis Dot Diagram (hand-written)
 Melting point
 Boiling point
 Origin of name
 Who discovered it
 What periodic table family it belongs to
 Properties of the family it belongs to (chemical & physical)
 3 interesting facts
 Cost (give price and amount, and source of this pricing information) *will not be available for all elements
 An advertising slogan that describes one or more of its important uses. BE CREATIVE! You must link your slogan to at least one of its
important properties or uses.

Write 3-5 sentence “pitch” about your element that could be aired on a 30-second commercial.
Advertisement flyer or brochures must be neat, colorful, and contain all the information listed above. You may use pictures that relate to your element’s
advertisement, but some requirements must be hand-written (see above).
In addition to your flyer, you must create a 24 in. x 24 in. display of your
element symbol to be displayed on the classroom ceiling. Be CREATIVE! You
must include: element symbol, element name, atomic number, atomic mass,
state of matter at room temperature, electron configuration, and noble gas
notation. Please do not use poster board.
