Genetics - Intro to Heredity ← Gregor Mendel What is Heredity? Heredity is the delivery of characteristics from parent to offspring. The study of heredity is called Genetics. The Role of Fertilization ● ● ● ● ● Male part of flower contains pollen in reproductive cells called sperm. Female portion of the flower produces eggs. Reproductive cells joining = fertilization. In plants (peas), tiny embryos develop within a seed. Pea flowers are self-pollinating! (aka: true-breeding) ● ● Trait - Special characteristic of an individual ○ Example: Seed color (peas), hair color (humans) Hybrids - offspring of crosses between parents with different traits Give me two traits you have that came from your parents! Genes and Alleles ● Genes - factors that are passed from parent to offspring ○ Eye Color, Hair Color, Skin Color ● Allele - different forms of a gene ○ Brown, Green, Hazel, Blue (Eye color examples) Alleles - Dominant and Recessive ● Dominant Traits - An organism with at least ONE dominant trait will SHOW that trait ● Recessive Traits - An organism with TWO recessive traits with SHOW that trait Type to label the diagram with either Dominant or Recessive: 1. DD 2. pp Ll 3. ee 4. Segregation ● Segregation - think SEPARATION ● P = Parent Generation ● F1 = First Filial Generation ○ Parents mate - this is their children. ● F2 = Second Filial Generation ○ F1 cross F1 Sex Cells Gregor Mendel https://www.youtube.com/watc h?time_continue=310&v=YxK FdQo10rE - My Favorite Scientist - Gregor Mendel https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=GTiOETaZg4w - Sci Show Gregor Mendel
