Introduction to Electrical Engineering Laboratory
Objective
The laboratory emphasizes the practical, hands-on of component of this program
of study. It complements the theoretical material presented in lecture, and as such,
is integral and indispensable to the mastery of the subject. There are several items
of importance here including proper safety procedures, required tools, and
laboratory reports. This exercise will finish with an examination of scientific and
engineering notation, the standard form of representing and manipulating values.
At the end of practical laboratory, students should be able:
1. To define the method for plug and 13 Ampere power socket connections.
2. Identify colour code for flexible core cord.
3. To finish the cable installation for two 13 Ampere power socket.
Lab Safety and Tools
If proper procedures are followed, the electrical lab is prefectly safe place in
which to work. There are some basic rules : No food or drink is allowed in lab at
any time. Liquid are of praticular danger as they are ordinarily conductive. While
the circuitry used in the lab is normally of no shock hazard, some of test equipment
may have very high internal voltages that could be lethal. Spilling a bottle of water
or soda onto such equipment could leave the experimenter in the receiving end of
a severve shock. Similarly, items such as books and jackets should not be left on
top of the test equipment as it could cause overheating.
When you enter the laboratory for the first time, please identify the following
points.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Entrance main door
Emergency exit
Fire assembly point
Main circuit breaker
Where the instruments are kept
First aid box
Note the general time schedule for the laboratory.
1. Starting time of lab sessions
2. Ending time of lab sessions
3. Lunch time.
Each time a lab sessions being conducted, there will be an instructor in-charge for
the session. You all are required to report the instructor for all activities you are
doing at the lab. If you adhere to the rules and regulations the laboratory will be a
pleasant place to learn.

1. Identify all tools and materials.
2. Strip the end of all cord cable (flexible 3 core cable) – estimated about 1 cm
for each cable.
3. Identify the code colour :
Live
- red or brown
Neutral
- black or blue
Earth
- green or yellow
4. Twist the end of each conductor (cable).
5. Tighten the screw using the suitable screwdriver.
6. Connect the 2nd socket using the colour code of connection cable.
7. Install the plug 13A with the flexible 3 core cord. (make sure the terminal/
source are same as step 3)
8. Test the cable connection using Multimeter and the power supply 240 volt
source.

Question / Discussions:
a) List down 5 (Five) electrical saftey rules that should be done while doing this
practical lab.
I.
II.
III.
Shoes must be worn at all time
Remove all loose conductive jewelry and trinkets including ring s which may
come in contact with exposed circuits (Do not wear long loose ties scavers
or other loose clothinng around machines)
Be as neat a possible .keep the work area and workbench clear of items not
used in the experiment
IV.
V.
Always check to see that the power switch is OFF before plugging into the
outlet .also turn instument or equipment OFF before unplugging from outlet
When unpligging a power cord pull on the plug not on the cable
Conclusion (knowledge that I gadned / learned in this practical)
The conclusion is that what I learned from this practical is how to install flexible 3
core cord cable into plug 13A and 2 socket outlet 13A. In addition, we recognize 3
types of cables is live(red or brown), neutral (black or blue), earth (green or
yellow). We can also use equipment that is suitable for the project. Between the
equipment is test pen, wire cutter and pliers. We can also learned something new
that included wiring in an effective and safe way. We also know how the socket
works. Other than that, we also learned the safety that must be observed in the lab
so as to avoid any unwanted misfortune. In addition, we also know the position of
the emergency box and how it works. We can also read the results using
appropriate tools to detect the presence of electricity.
