DNA & PROTEIN SYNTHESIS UNIT
Due at end of class ______________
Name ________________________
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How is genetic information stored and copied?
How do mistakes in the DNA replication process lead to mutations?
How is the code present in DNA used to make protein molecules?
C LAYER- BASIC FACTS & SKILLS (assignments are graded based on completion)
STUDY
GUIDE
(HW)
Complete the DNA & Potein Synthesis Study Guide
❏ Pick up sheet in “extra handouts” bin
❏ Find the CIRCLED words in your activity packet. Fill out the Study Guide & turn in.
Class Activity 1: DNA EXTRACTION + DNA BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Structure & Function of DNA – Video
 Watch the video 1 time without doing anything:
STEP 1 (HW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_POdWsii7AIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z
wibgNGe4aY
 Watch a 2nd time & complete the handout: Amoeba Sisters: “Structure & Function of
DNA” handout (in your packet after Activity 1)
 Tear off the handout and turn in
Class Activity 2: DNA STRUCTURE & REPLICATION
STEP 2 (HW)
DNA Replication – Video
 Watch the video 1 time without doing anything:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qSrmeiWsuc&vl=en
 Watch a 2nd time & complete the “Amoeba Sisters Video Recap: DNA Replication”
handout (in your activity packet after Activity 2)
 Note that there are 2 sides to this handout. The back is challenging – you will need to
watch the video at least 2 times to help you. Do not worry if your narrations are not
perfect- try to fill out something in each box.
 Tear off the handout and turn in
Class Activity 3: INTRO TO PROTEIN SYNTHESIS + ORGANELLES INVOLVED IN PROTEIN SYNTHESIS
STEP 3 (HW)
Why RNA is just as Cool as DNA - Video
 Watch the video 1 time without doing anything:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Elo-zX1k8M
 Watch a 2nd time & complete the handout: “Amoeba Sisters Video Recap: DNA vs. RNA
& Protein Synthesis – Whose Show is This” (in your activity packet after activity 3)
 Tear off the handout and turn in
Class Activity 4: PROTEIN SYNTHESIS NOTES + PRACTICE
STEP 4 (HW)
Protein Synthesis and the Lean Mean Ribosome Machines - Video
 Watch the video 1 time without doing anything:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5mJbP23Buo
 Watch a 2nd time & complete the handout: “Amoeba Sisters Video Recap: DNA vs RNA
and Protein Synthesis- Protein Synthesis Summary” (in your activity packet after
activity 4)
 Tear off the handout and turn in
Class Activity 5: MUTATIONS
Extra Credit
(up to 4
points!)
Mutations Practice Worksheet
 Complete the worksheet at the end of your packet
(must complete at least 4 out of 5 homework assignments)
C LAYER Complete (70-74 points): _________
B LAYER- Apply knowledge to a new situation (assignments are graded with points)
points
received
Assignment (10 points possible)
STEP 5
IN CLASS ONLY
You may use
your binder.
DNA Structure & Protein Synthesis QUIZ
 1. On a large sheet of paper, draw the outline of a cell (a large circle is fine!)
 2. Draw & label the organelle that contains DNA – make it fairly large (1 point)
 3. Draw & label the organelle where protein synthesis will take place (1 point)
 4. Within the appropriate organelle, draw a simple double helix model of DNA
using letters to represent 12 base pairs on each strand (you create a UNIQUE
order of the base pairs) (2 points)
 5. Highlight the strand of DNA that will be transcribed
 6. On the organelle where protein synthesis will take place, draw a squiggle
line to represent the mRNA strand that is transcribed from the DNA strand you
highlighted (include the appropriate letters to represent each base on the
mRNA) (1 point)
 7. Draw parenthesis around each CODON on the mRNA strand (1 point)
 8. Next to the codons, draw & LABEL circles to represent the specific amino
acids that will be translated from the mRNA – hint, you will need to use the
codon chart (2 points)
 9. At the bottom of your paper, re-write the DNA sequence of the original
strand you highlighted WITH a mutation in the DNA & label the type of
mutation (2 points)
 10. Extra credit: Trancribe & translate the mutated DNA (2 points)
B LAYER Complete (record C layer + B Layer points): _________
(must complete B layer before receiving credit for the A layer)
A LAYER- Critical analysis (assignments are graded with points)
points
received
Assignment (16 points possible)
STEP 6
DNA Concept Map
 Create a concept map using as many of these words as possible: James Watson,
Francis Crick, chromosome, DNA, double helix, nucleotide, nitrogen base,
phosphate group, deoxyribose, helicase, RNA polymerase, nucleus, gene, RNA,
mRNA, ribosome, transcription, translation, codon, anticodon, tRNA, amino acid,
polypeptide, protein
 Points will be awarded based on:
o # of words correctly used: up to 5 points
o Clarity of connections between topics (may include words on the lines
between each concept “bubble” if needede): up to 6 points
o Organization, use of color, neatness: up to 5 points
Rosalind Franklin
 Who was SHE? What was her role in the discovery of the structure of DNA?
Why wasn’t she awarded the nobel prize?
 Complete an A Layer Analysis Sheet & Essay
A LAYER Complete (record C Layer + B Layer + A Layer points) : _________
