Green Building Rating Systems in Qatar
There are two Green Building Rating Systems
widely used in Qatar ie GSAS and LEED
• GSAS – Global Sustainability Assessment
System developed by GORD GORD(Gulf
Organization for Research and
Development)
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) by US Green Building
Council
GSAS – Global Sustainability Assessment System
GSAS is a part of QCS 2010 and QCS 2014 and hence it
is widely used in Qatar.
All major Government Projects recently developed are
perusing GSAS Certification.
• ASHGAL Schools
• ASHGAL Health Care facilities
• New Port Project
• Qrail
• Lusail development
• All Ministry buildings
LEED – Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design
Older projects prior to the popularity of GSAS have
used LEED as a Green Building Rating System for their
projects.
Qatar Foundation and Msheireb Properties are the
organizations which have primarily used LEED for their
projects
In the next few slides we will introduce you to some of
the well known Green Buildings in Qatar
 Qatar Foundation Education City Campus – LEED
Platinum
 RasGas Tower – LEED Gold
 Msheireb Downtown - World’s largest collection of LEED
certified buildings
 Kahramaa Awareness Park - GSAS Award receiver and
the national winner for Qatar of the coveted Energy
Globe Award 2015
QATAR FOUNDATION EDUCATION CITY CAMPUS
Qatar Foundation (QF)
plays an instrumental
role in Qatar’s
sustainability efforts as
it helps transform the
country into a
knowledge-based
economy
Project Details:
•Size: 775,000 SF
•Project cost: $187millions
•The development comprises two individual male and female complexes with a permeating Islamic motif.
The complex
comprises state-ofthe-art sustainable
technology and
energy-efficient
systems throughout
its entirety.
It also allows students to track their green footprint by monitoring
their individual water and energy consumption, and is equipped with a
solar-paneled roof, and wind turbines that generate clean energy at
gusts of 10km or more
RASGAS TOWER -
Qatar’s first Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design (LEED)
certification
for
commercial
interiors with Green Building
Rating System - Gold Level by the
US
Green
Building
Council
(USGBC).
Project Details:
•Size: 54,000 m2 (581,251 ft²)
•Project cost: $110 Million USD
•The RasGas Headquarters Tower for Commercial Interiors
with Green Building Rating System Gold Level
Msheireb Downtown - The world’s largest collection of
LEED certified buildings
Project Details:
•Size: 64,190 Sq. ft
•Project cost: QR20 billion (US$5.5 billion, €4.18 billion)
•The city has six construction phases: Phase 1A, Phase 1B, Phase 1C, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4.
Msheireb Downtown - The world’s largest collection of
LEED certified buildings
When completed, Msheireb’s
developer claims the entire
complex will reduce carbon
dioxide emissions by as much
as 110,000 tons per year
compared to conventionally
built developments of a similar
size.
Solar panels on top of the buildings and covered walkways
will catch Qatar’s abundant sun and will in part power all of the buildings.
Smart grid technologies will also be an important facet of the development’s
promise to be as energy efficient as possible.
Msheireb Downtown - The world’s largest collection of
LEED certified buildings
Moving from north to
south, the buildings
cascade and become
taller so that each one
shades the one next
to it
Thick walls will help
to keep the buildings’
interiors cool.
 Pedestrian walkways will zigzag so that no matter what time of day
visitors find themselves in Msheireb, they will never find themselves trapped in
the sun.
Kahramaa Awareness Park- GSAS Award and
the national winner for Qatar of Energy Globe Award 2015
Kahramaa Awareness Park
is an innovative project
designed as a science
museum for disseminating
information on ways to
conserve
water
and
electricity, and serves as
an original
source of
knowledge
for
young
visitors.
The park is a truly unique sustainable structure, combining among others, a
photovoltaic system and three wind turbines to generate electricity and a solar
thermal solution producing hot water supply.
