2016

Welcome to the
Gen2 Apprenticeship
Information Guide for
2016. By now you will
probably be thinking
about your future and
what to do after you
leave school or college.
This can be a daunting
experience so we are
here to offer you the
best possible start and
the first step towards a
highly rewarding career!
By choosing an
Apprenticeship, you
will be able to train on
the job using state of
the art machinery and
equipment. You will
be taught by industry
leading specialists,
all whilst becoming
qualified and receiving a
wage. You will be getting
your first step onto a
career ladder with real
prospects and gaining
skills that are essential
for industry and are
recognised by employers
nationally.
An Introduction to Gen2
We currently train over 1,250
apprentices and our programmes are
becoming increasingly popular as
employers and young people realise
the benefits of an apprenticeship.
During your apprenticeship,
dependent on your ability, you will
have the opportunity to progress
from an apprenticeship to a Higher
Apprenticeship. From there, you can
continue with further learning, to
gain employer-funded qualifications
all the way to University and beyond.
We have been delivering exceptional
apprenticeship training for over
a decade and continue to be the
leading trainer of Mechanical,
Electrical, Nuclear and Systems &
Control apprenticeships in Cumbria.
We have also been awarded a
Grade1 ‘Outstanding’ in our most
recent Ofsted inspection.
Your employment prospects with a
Gen2 apprenticeship couldn’t be
better. In the last ten years, 93% of
apprentices that have been trained
by us, progress immediately into fulltime employment.
For a full list of courses
see our index page!
Gen2 are committed to
equality of opportunity
and the safeguarding of
learners

Gen2 provides an outstanding range of
engineering and specialist supplementary
awards that meet employers’ skills needs.
Ofsted Inspection Report, April 2011
Why choose work-based training?
The Uni option
As an apprentice you will be associated
with a real job with a high quality employer.
This opens employment opportunities
rarely available without experience. You
will also actually earn a wage, with paid
holiday entitlement and other employee
benefits. Once you’ve completed your
apprenticeship you can expect an everincreasing pay packet and the opportunity
to train up further; gaining qualifications
right up to a Degree and even Level 7
Post-Graduate courses with Gen2. We also
provide a huge range of short professional
training courses for things like Health &
Safety that will help you stay out in front
in future.
You might feel like University is the only
option for a better career. In reality the
average student will leave university
owing as much as £50,000 in tuition fees
alone.
Apprenticeships are a great way to build
a solid life-long career, with a fantastic
93% of Gen2 apprentices going straight
into full-time employment on completion
of their course compared to just 87.5% of
graduates, according to statistics from the
Department of Innovation & Skills.
Many apprentices then go on to become
key figures in their companies, with the
Managing Director of at least one globallyrenowned engineering business following
this career path in recent years locally.
Another great advantage of training with
Gen2 is that we give you the opportunity
to stay in the area whilst undertaking
nationally respected training in world-class
facilities... Perfect if you’re looking to save
some money before moving out from home.
4
University
Your Tuition Fees up to
£50k
Of course everyone wants a degree, but did
you know that the top apprenticeships are
fully equivalent to the best degrees? In
fact a Gen2 apprenticeship now offers all
the pathways that Uni does - right up to
Level 7 post-graduate study. What is
more, a recent survey by the National
Apprenticeship Service showed that,
because apprenticeships encompass realworld employment experience, they are
frequently more valued by employers.
Average Starting Salary
£14,734
Apprentice
This is clearly demonstrated by the fact
that, according to the Office of National
Statistics, in 2014 as many as 26% of
recent Uni graduates were stuck in low paid
part-time jobs compared to only 11% of
apprentices; of those graduates in better
jobs 27% were still earning less than the
average apprentice’s wage. Indeed, further
evidence from notgoingtouni.co.uk shows
the average graduate starting salary of
£14,734 compares very poorly to the
£18,463 that the average newly qualified
apprentice can expect.

FREE
Average Starting Salary
£18,463
With students now having to bear the cost
of their university education, is it REALLY
worth the cost when you can go-on
to undertake a professional degree or
degree-equivalent apprenticeship course
with Gen2, be 93% certain you’ll get
snapped up for a real full time career AND
get paid for it?

The role of a Pipefitting Apprentice:
A pipefitter is similar to a plumber in that both
work with, install and manipulate pipes. The pipes
a pipefitter works with must carry liquids or gases
at high pressure for industrial purposes, while a
plumber deals with pipes that carry water at low
pressure.
Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using
detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping
and bending pipe in preparation for welding.
Pipefitters also fit sections of metal pipe together
by cutting them precisely and may use techniques
such as threading and bending.
Often working alongside welders they connect
piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in
difficult conditions.

producing life, ensuring that there is no danger
from radioactive materials and no chance of
accident to people visiting the site.
Process operations entails the operation of large
and often complex machinery and equipment,
making sure they run safely and efficiently. These
skills are transferable to other fields such as
environmental
restoration or general engineering activities that
are carried out within many businesses in the
chemical, polymer and petrochemical industries.
Year one will be spent giving you a wide range
of engineering and nuclear related skills in
preparation for assessment on your NVQ Level 2
in the workplace including
basic hand skills, maintenance skills, process
measurement and control.
Some Plant Operators will be trained in plant
control rooms which are automated processes to
allow chemicals and products to be moved
around the building or site in a controlled
