May is a month for many kinds of
celebrations. I’m looking forward to an
Auf Ruf and wedding, bar and bat mitzvah
celebrations, and other milestone events. On
May 23, five women will celebrate their bat
mitzvah together. This event will be the culmination of two
years of dedicated study. The women learned Hebrew, history,
liturgy, customs, chanting haftarah and leyning Torah. They
are role models to their families and to the entire congregation.
Mazal tov to Beth Byer, Lauren Cheng, Sheila Clawson,
Kim Gilbert and Joanne Robinson on this wonderful
accomplishment. And a special thanks to Carol Stollar
who had the vision and the practical know-how to make this
program such a resounding success.
Congratulations, too, to Kita Zayin, who will be
graduating on Sunday, May 31st. While I assume the students
are relieved to be done, it’s important to remember that
after all these years in religious school; this is really just the
beginning. So to the entire class: Remember that religious
school imparts the basic knowledge, and now you have the
rest of your lives to continue learning about Judaism and to
live a fulfilling Jewish life.
The 31st is also the date of our spring bar-b-q. The
entire congregation is invited for delicious food and wonderful
company. And between these two events is our Congregational
Annual Meeting.
Please plan on being at the meeting. I’ll be reporting on
the status of the congregation, and committee chairs will report
on their accomplishments and their goals for the future. We
will also vote on the new slate of officers as well as the budget.
While our membership is 217 families, we run programs as if
we were three times this size. Being small and haimish is a
quality most of us love about Temple Reyim. But our small
congregation faces the ongoing challenge of supporting the
extensive programming to which we’ve grown accustomed.
At the Annual Meeting, I’ll lay out the ways in which we’re
attempting to live within our means, and we’ll have an
opportunity to discuss the implications of these changes.
As I approach the end of my presidency, I’m beginning
to look into my rear-view mirror, seeing both accomplishments
and challenges that we’ve faced over the past two years. But
I still have my eye on the road ahead, and I’m focused on
continuing to strengthen and build our community for a long,
bright future.

Machshevot HaRav—Rabbinic Thoughts—crv ,ucajn
Over the next few weeks, the annual transition from
school year to summer will begin. Traffic will increase as
family and friends come to town to celebrate
the graduations of their loved ones from the
numerous universities and colleges in our
area. The moving vans, that we last saw at
the end of August, will return to move the
students out of their dorms and apartments and things will
slow down a bit for the summer.
This year the Temple Reyim community will also be
celebrating a special graduation toward the end of May. On
Shabbat Morning May 23rd, Parshat B’Midbar, five students
who have completed a two year course of study in our Adult
Bar/Bat Mitzvah program will celebrate their B’not Mitzvah
during our Shabbat morning service. These women have
worked very hard over the past two years increasing their level
of Jewish knowledge and commitment. They have learned
about our history, our holidays, our values and the sacred
texts that serve as a strong foundation to everything we stand
for as a faith community. Additionally, they have mastered
leadership skills for parts of the Shabbat morning service and
will be leading the service and chanting from the Torah and
Haftarah as part of the celebration. I am very proud of our
adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class and I hope you will join us as we
mark their accomplishment on May 23rd.
As one of their teachers in this program, I have been
most impressed with their desire to learn and understand
the variety of materials that has been presented to them. As
a group and as individuals, their thirst for knowledge has
made their experience even more fulfilling than the original
program outlined in the initial course syllabus. This group
wanted to learn and all of their teachers were excited to teach
them. But what now? What happens after the ceremony, after
the graduation?
The answer is a simple one: we all continue to learn
together. For us as Jews, learning is an ongoing process. There
are no graduations. In fact one week later, on May 28-30th
we gather to celebrate the festival of Shavuoth, where we
learn together and celebrate the gift of Torah and all that it
represents. Learning is critical to Jewish existence. It is not
a seasonal undertaking but truly a life-long engagement. I
hope that you will join us for both the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah
celebration and the observance of Shavuoth. Both are ways
through which we express our commitment to knowledge and
understanding and seek intellectual and spiritual fulfillment
through Torah.

Celebrate Tikkun Leil Shavuot, Thursday May 28
Examining the Relationship of the Jewish People to the Environment
Tikkun Leil Shavuot is on Thursday evening May 28,
2009. It is an evening of study and learning to commemorate
the giving of the Torah by God to the Jewish people. The
theme of the study sessions will be an examination of the
relationship of the Jewish people to the environment. Our
keynote speaker will be Rabbi Natan Margalit, Director of
Oraita, Institute for Continuing Rabbinic Education at Hebrew
College. Dr. Margalit is an Assistant Professor of Rabbinics at
Hebrew College. He received his BA from Reed College and
his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. His
rabbinic ordination is from the Jerusalem Seminary.
Robbie Durschlag from the Green Decade coalition

According to a legend in the Midrash, the night before
the Torah was given, the Israelites retired early to be wellrested for the momentous day ahead, but they overslept and
Moses had to wake them up because God was already waiting
on the mountaintop. To rectify this, observant Jews stay up
during the night to study, thus assuring they are awake when
the Torah was given.
After study, there will be dairy refreshments and an
evening service. Come and celebrate the giving of the Torah
and learn more about our role in being stewards of the
environment.

On May 29 and 30, we will celebrate the holiday of
Shavuot. Shavuot commemorates the day the Jewish people
received the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Shavuot has a few customs
associated with it: eating dairy food, staying up all night to
learn Torah, and decorating the synagogue with flowers, just
as the Children of Israel decorated humble, plain Mt. Sinai.
We also read the Book of Ruth on Shavuot. One
reason given for reading Megillat Ruth on Shavuot is that
Ruth’s acceptance into the Jewish faith is analogous to the
Jews acceptance of the Torah. Another reason is that the
story of Ruth takes place during harvest time, and Shavuot
occurs during the spring harvest, hence the name Yom
HaBikkurim.
When we read Megillat Ruth, we learn of her devotion
to her mother-in-law Naomi and her willingness to adopt
Judaism. Naomi guides Ruth into marriage with Boaz, who
provided the poor stranger Ruth with sustenance by instructing
his workers to leave the gleanings of his fields for her. These
actions illustrate the laws of pe’ah (leaving the corners of
the field unharvested) and leket (leaving behind individual
stalks that fall from the bundles that have been reaped). These
laws allow the needy to reap. They are found in the Torah
immediately following the instructions to observe the festival
of Shavuot (Leviticus 23:22).
The Torah law relates these laws specifically for
observance in the Land of Israel, but Maimonides, a 12th
century Jewish scholar, wrote that they do extend to areas
outside of Israel. Since we don’t live in an agricultural
society, how can we observe these laws today? There are
several established organizations that reach out to the hungry,
specifically our hungry Jewish brethren.
The mission of Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger
is “to educate and raise the consciousness of the Jewish
community regarding its obligation to alleviate hunger and
its causes,” and “to provide for people who are hungry while
at the same time advocating for other ways to end hunger and
its causes.” Mazon encourages families who are celebrating
s’machot (bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, etc.) to donate 3% of
the cost of these events to Mazon. Mazon also offers tzedakah
projects for b’nei mitzvah. You can find out more about Mazon
at www.mazon.org.
Jewish Family and Children’s Services Family Table
is Greater Boston’s Kosher food pantry. Temple Reyim
participates in this program by collecting packaged food
in a designated cabinet in the front lobby of the building.
Donations are collected and delivered to Family Table. At least
twice a year, volunteers from the Temple gather and pack and
deliver food to area families in need. To get involved in this
program, contact Bobbi Fox at bobbifox@pair.com.
Yad Chessed Charity Fund delivers to needy Boston
area Jews gift cards or certificates that can be used at local
supermarkets and kosher groceries. Yad Chessed also
distributes food certificates for Purim (matanot l‘evyonim)
and to defray the extra food costs of preparing for Pesach
and Rosh Hashanah. You can learn more about Yad Chessed
Charity fund at www.yadchessed.org.
This Shavuot, as we read about our matriarch Ruth and
her plight as a needy widow, let us keep in mind the needy
Jews in our community and abroad by contributing what we
can, whether money or time, to perform the mitzvoth of leket
and pe’ah.

Cheryl Ann’s Bakery. Raffle prizes were donated by Peet’s
Coffee, The Silver Woman, Games and Gizmos, Karma, and
Sabra Restaurant. Thank you to everyone who participated
in these events for your support of USY.
This has been a very successful year for our USY
programs. Overall membership increased significantly and
TRUSY’s Tikun Olam fundraising total for this year is already
double that for last year. TRUSY’s strength during the last
two years is in large part the result of the dedicated leadership
provided by Joie Schwartz, Youth Director and Senior USY
Advisor. Due to restructuring of TRUSY staffing for 2009-10,
Joie will be leaving Temple Reyim at the end of June. Please
take a moment to say farewell to Joie. We will miss Joie, but
her enthusiastic support of TRUSY over the past two years
will leave a lasting impression.
Finally, the Youth Committee would love to have
some new members. We are sorry to have to say good-bye
to Cheryl Kirschner, who has been a dedicated and active
member of the Youth Committee for many years. In addition
to her duties on the Youth Committee, Cheryl has coordinated
housing for the Reyim visit of the USY Wheels Summer
Program. Kathryn Kirshenbaum also has stepped down
after providing wonderful help as our Recording Secretary.
Please contact me (kgilbert68@gmail) if you are interested in
joining the Committee and/or if you are interested in hosting
a USY Wheels participant on July 1st .

Brotherhood Special Events
Program
“Meeting the Candidates” Forum Sunday,
March 15, 2009
We might say that this “meeting was 12 years in
the making”. But then we could wait it out! Then the
announcement finally came. Newton Mayor David Cohen
will not run for re-election this coming November. Now was
the time. Brotherhood invited the four declared candidates,
State Rep. Ruth Balser, Alderman Paul Coletti, Alderman
Ken Parker and Atty. Setti Warren to appear at Temple Reyim
Brotherhood’s “Meet the Candidate’s” Forum. An audience
of over 140 attended this free admission program to hear
the candidates voice their views, and solutions on the many
issues confronting Newton voters this coming election in
November; the financial crisis, the school system, roads and
public buildings and many more during this two hour program.
A hearty Yasher Koach to Jeff Lazarus who proved to be a
very capable and effective Forum Moderator and also David
Carlen, Bruce Jacobs, Joan Smoller, David and Carol
Stollar, Office Manager Charisse Middlebrooks and custodian
Luis Cardorna with their combined efforts in making this very
important program a success.
A special Todah Rabah to Joan Smoller for her financial
contribution to this forum program.

Temple Reyim Outreach Program
We are celebrating our 20th year with the Newton Health
Care Center. We are helping Jewish residents stay connected
to the Jewish religion and traditions while living in a secular
environment.
On Friday, April 10 at 3:30 pm the monthly erev
Shabbat service was conducted by Committee members Mitzi
Perlmutter, accompanied by her son, Jonathan and Bernie
Zigman. A brief Kiddush followed the service wih traditional
Passover food being served. Our next erev Shabbat service
will take place on May 8. If you wish to have me visit a relative
or friend at Health Care please call or email me.

Reyim Israel Action
The Reyim community came out
to show its support for Israel on April
30 at Newton City Hall where Israel
Consul General Nadiv Tamir discussed the
prospects for peace in the Mideast with a
spokesman for the PA. Earlier in the day
the entire community rallied in front of the Israeli embassy
to celebrate Israel Independence Day, Yom Haatzmaut.
The Reyim Yom Haatzmaut celebration will take place
Sun. evening, May 3, 6-8 pm. It will feature Israeli food,
make-your-own sundaes, videos (including the video of the
Reyim-IDF Purim distribution of treats to Israeli soldiers),
and brief presentations by Reyim members who recently
came back from Israel. Bring the whole family. A light dairy
supper will be provided.

Brotherhood Bone Marrow
Registration Drive
Brotherhood conducted back to back successful
programs on Sunday, March 15, 2009 in Ordis Hall. After the
two hour “Meeting the Mayoral Candidates” Forum ended,
Brotherhood continued its successful programming with a
Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive. Steve Karas, a donor
life saver himself set up a registration drive area to encourage
many of the Forum audience to sign up.
It was easy, fast and safe and successful.
Steven Karas, who grew up at Temple Reyim, received
a Yasher Koach Award at the Brotherhood Shabbat service on
March 21 for saving the life of a young boy who was dying
from osteopetrosis, a rare bone decease and who needed a
transplant immediately. Steve who had previously signed up at
a registration drive, agreed and fortunately the operation was
successful and now the boy is alive and well with a normal
life expectancy We thank Steven’s mother, Gloria Karas
a long time Temple Reyim active member for her financial
donation to this program.
Brotherhood is dedicated to focusing on the needs
of our Temple Reyim membership and our surrounding
community.

Laymen’s Institute
The New England Region of the FJMC Presents the
63rd Annual Laymen’s Institute at Camp Ramah June 11
– 14, 2009.
Laymen’s Institute is the first and oldest weekend
retreat for Jewish men in America. Synagogue or Men’s
Club membership is not required and Jewish men of all
traditions are welcome to attend. The weekend begins on
Thursday afternoon and ends Sunday morning before noon;
however men may arrive and leave at times that meet their
own schedules. We avoid traveling on Shabbat.
The schedule is centered on our two Scholars -in Residence, Rabbi Mayer E. Rabinowitz, associate professor of
Talmud at the JTS. and Rabbi Daniel Liben, of Temple Israel
of Natick, each of whom will deliver multiple lectures.
Between religious services and lectures you have a
wonderful mix of relaxation, sports, eating, singing and
camaraderie. Other activities include softball, a tennis
competition, swimming and boating.

Reproductive Rights Lobby Day
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a
grassroots organization of volunteers working on public
policy issues from a Jewish perspective, urges you to join us
in advocating for the protection of reproductive choices at the
May 14th Reproductive Rights Lobby Day on Beacon Hill!
Bring friends and family and come make your voice
heard. It is important for the pro-choice faith community to
be represented at this event.
While Massachusetts leads the nation on health care
reform, archaic laws restricting reproductive choices threaten
the Commonwealth’s ability to ensure quality health care for
all. Dangerous statutes remain on the books that, if enforced,
would put women’s health and safety in danger. Legislation
that would finally repeal these unconstitutional limitations is
being considered by the legislature, and it is important that
we show up and speak to ask legislators to pass this important
and long-overdue legislation now!
Reproductive Rights Lobby Day will run from 10 am2 pm on May 14th. Before venturing to legislators’ offices,
activists will hear from policy makers, pro-choice advocates,
and will receive a brief lobby training. Participants who
cannot stay for the entire time are encouraged to stay for part
of the program. Even an hour of your time will make a huge
difference!
What: Reproductive Rights Lobby Day
When: Thursday, May 14th, 10 am-2 pm
Where: State House

Welcome to Our New Member Families
Steve List and Aviva Kupferberg left the New York City area earlier this year to begin fulfilling their respective
dreams and goals.
Steve worked as an Asian markets
trader with a well-known New Yorkbased trading and investment firm. It
was a position that he handled with
dexterity and oftentimes, single-handedly,
at night. When Steve accepted the
newly created position of Vice President
and Head Trader with AlphaSimplex,
a hedge fund firm based in Cambridge,
Steve and Aviva left New York with
high hopes and big smiles.
Aviva left the legal field to join Steve
and to pursue her interest in the social
sciences and services sector. She was a
volunteer with the Manhattan Borough
of CASA (“Court Appointed Special
Advocates”), which is an organization
that assists Family Court with children’s
cases. Aviva plans on pursuing her
MSW in the near future and exploring
the fields of gerontology, family-based
issues, as well as criminology.
Currently, Steve and Aviva are
happily living in Wellesley with a
menagerie of four cats, and a pair of lively
and very naughty miniature pinschers.
Steve enjoys all sports, sporting events,
sports news, sports… (you get the
picture) and of course, golfing. Steve also enjoys reading history, in particular, about U.S. economics history and the Civil
War. Aviva enjoys writing, gardening, watching the wildlife, and experimenting new dishes on Steve.
They look forward to being part of the Temple Reyim community.
Steve List and Aviva Kupferberg
We are Sam, Susan, Liza and Raphael Goldberg and we live in Wellesley. Sam is a Financial Advisor with Merrill
Lynch and Susan is an attorney with the First Circuit Court of Appeals. Liza is 11 years old and in 5th grade at Solomon
Schechter, she will be attending Wellesley Middle School next year. Raphi is 7 and is in 1st grade at Solomon Schechter.
Both kids play soccer, love to ski and play piano. Liza also enjoys gymnastics and track. We also have a house in Grantham
NH where we go to ski in the winter and swim, hike and kayak in the summer. We are very excited to have joined Temple
Reyim.

Honoring the Memory of
Our Loved Ones
Our departed loved ones live on in our thoughts and
actions. There is no greater way to honor their memories than
by inscribing their names permanently on a brass plaque to
be affixed in the Eleanor Weisman Gray Memorial Alcove in
the main sanctuary or a bronze plaque to be affixed on the
Jean Samick Klein Yizkor Board in the Goldweitz Chapel.
The cost is $450 per plaque. Please call or email me.
