Workout group competition updates plus changes
That’s the NEM flag beside the Stars and Stripes and
the state of California flag at the USMS nationals at
Irving, CA, in 1981. It stayed up there throughout the
meet because two NEMs saw an empty flagpole.
Timeline (preliminary—not official)
Thank you, Evelyn
Evelyn Hausberger is retiring as the New England
LMSC treasurer. Evelyn became registrar in 1996
and served three years until Wendy Burge. took on
that increasingly big job. Evelyn has also been the
LMSC treasurer. She has done a fine job in both positions. All of New England owes her thanks for
giving so much to the New England Masters Swim
Club and all the other swimmers in the LMSC.
Might be interested in being the next New England LMSC treasurer? Contact Tom Lyndon at

NEM News
•
April 2000
from Bob Seltzer’s March 27 & March 29 E-News emails
With 550 entries, we expect an intense competition for the top ten places in the NEM
workout group competition. Some 20+ NEM workout groups have a reasonable shot at
finishing in the top ten and 40 other workout groups will be represented. Scratches and
relays will decide the results. Rankings based on the preliminary entry information:
1 Cambridge
Home pool advantage prevails.
2 Great Bay
If close to Cambridge, then should win Grand Champion title.
3 Minutemen
Newcomer looks like solid #3.
4 East Providence Will have to show up in force, swim good relays to maintain place.
5 Longfellow
They have the numbers to overtake EPM if they swim good relays.
6 BU
Will need to swim good relays to maintain position.
7 Andover
Could challenge BU.
8 though 10
Twelve groups with a good chance to make Top Ten: Healthpoint,
Duxbury, Nashua Penquins, Wellesley, Twin Oaks, Concord Y, Cape
Cod Swim Club, South County Y, Beverly Y, Western New England
College, North Suburban Y, Boston Y
Check out the individual entries, team rosters, and psych sheets on the NEM web site at

We expect long sessions due to the very large turnout and the use of a single 8 lane course
for most of the meet. We are proposing minor changes to the meet format. See below
for details to shorten Friday’s session. This timeline is assumes no scratches:
Friday
Session ends
*10:30 p.m.
Saturday 2nd warm-up begins 10:00 a.m.
Saturday Session ends 5:00 p.m.
Sunday 2nd warm-up begins 10:00 a.m.
Sunday
Session ends 4:45 p.m.
* Shortened one hour as os 3/29 because of volunteers to swim in the shallow end.
A more detailed timeline by event will be posted in advance of the meet. The above
timeline will change. Use it as only a general guide. Regardless of all published meet
timelines, swimmers must be in the starting area behind their lanes before their heats.
Optional use of shallow end for 1000 and 1650
Harvard’s Blodgett pool has a six lane course in the shallow end. Due to its depth, we
are not permitted to use starting blocks. Swimmers have the option of swimming in the
shallow end if they use in-the-water starts. The benefit to the swimmer is the chance to
swim earlier. The benefit to the meet is the 1650 and 1000 will finish earlier in the eight
lane course Friday evening. If you are willing to help by swimming in the shallow end,
send an email ASAP to: seltzer@metasoft.com. As of March 29, we have received a number of volunteers to swim in the shallow end. Because of them, the Friday session has
already been shortened from 11:30 to 10:30. We would like to have more volunteers and
will accept volunteers as late as the 1000 and 1650 check-in deadline of 1:45 p.m. Friday,
when all 1000 and 1650 entries must be confirmed.

The 468 NEMs in the 2000 One Hour Swim
NEM News is honored to be able to
print the names of these 468 NEM
swimmers. This is a big accomplishment for each swimmer and for the
New England Masters Swim Club.
The editor was torn on how to arrange the swimmers. He was inclined
to arrange them alphabetically by
name because actually doing it is the
most important accomplishment. Arranging by yards swum by men and by
women did not recognize the age
groups. So, he went with the standard
USMS way. If you feel even slightly
inferior because you did not “go” as
many yards as some others did, don’t.
Half of our club didn’t swim any yards.
Of course, next year may be different.
The two digits on the far right are
the Master Factor for each swimmer. It
attempts to adjust each swimmer’s
yardage for age and sex. While no factor is perfect, this goes some of the
way towards comparisons among age
groups and sexes. This Master Factor
was calculated by Ed Gendreau

Streamlining
by Dave Samuelsohn
The faster you go, the more urgent the streamline…[and] I’ve figured out how to swim really, really fast. Fins. Very stiff, very long, black
graphite fins. I’m talking about you’re-gonna-need-a-roof-rack-fins.
…Swimming very fast with fins teaches us important nuances about
streamlining…What you learn when you swim very fast through the
water is that the slightest change in your streamline affects your forward speed noticeably. Or costs you a great deal of energy to keep it.
Nearly all of the resistance we encounter hits on our head and shoulders. It’s unavoidable but, critically, it’s manageable. We can make sure
4
Same type of workout as Monday. Lots of stroke/free mix.
Same type of swim workout as Tuesday. Stroke/free/
kicking/pull sets.
Saturday
Will take off a day here if there is a meet on Sunday.
Otherwise an approx.. 4000+ workout focusing on
distance free.
Other training secrets
Lots of beer, pizza and thinking like a college sophomore.
I also do weight training using free weights (light
weight./high reps) and full cardio nautilus 2-3 times for
about 1 1/2 hrs. each session per week during afternoons/evenings of same day of early morning swim
workouts.
How many weeks would you do this type
of training before changing your routine?
Varies according to schedule of meets.
Additional information
Training partners make a huge difference.

we rotate fully in free and back so each shoulder lifts high and well
above the surface. In fly and breast, we can ride higher so our shoulders clear the water at critical times when we are accelerating.
Keep your head “on straight”—being careful not to let your head
lift or wag. Coming off the turns in back and fly, stay under as long as
allowed. We’re actually faster if we kick out properly underwater. Coming off the wall in breaststroke…don’t look up…Coming off the wall
in freestyle, your elbow and your upper arm should be the first to
break the surface.

The
Self-Coached
Swimmer
by David Grilli
I have never found anything in sports that works as well as tapering.
Of course we are talking about tapering your swim workouts in
preparation for a big meet. I have discussed the subject with many
experienced swimmers and found they had conflicting opinions. Over
the years I have tried some or all of their advice and have come up
with some conflicting opinions of my own.
Tapering has two very important components. One is to rest the
swimming muscles and two is to refine your racing technique. Resting
the muscles is the easy part. Refining your technique takes a little
work. See, I told you they were conflicting opinions.
If you are a sprinter, start two weeks from your big swim meet and
reduce your total workout yardage by 25% per day. If you are a
distance swimmer, start 10 days out from the big meet and reduce
your daily yardage by 33% per day. Take a day off from swimming at
some time during this process but try not to take more than one day
off.
Two days before the start of the meet do not swim at all, don’t mow
the lawn, or shovel snow. Get someone else to do it. You are tapering!
The day before the meet swim 1200 yards nice and easy.
The yardage tapering is straight forward. The intensity tapering takes
some thinking.
Early in the taper, swim longer intervals but swim slightly faster. If you
usually do 5 x 100 on 1:30, and finish the 100 in 1:20, do 5 x 100 on
2:00 and try to finish in 1:15.
Also, change speeds when you swim. While doing a 100 swim, do the
first 25 easy and build your speed so that you are at about 85% speed
in the last 25. I like to do 75s where you alternate 25s fast, 25s easy,
25s fast. But whatever you do, not swim anything at 100% speed
during the taper period. As we say in the coaching business, “do not
leave your best swim in the workout pool.”
Another tapering trick I like is to sprint 12 1/2s. That is half the length
of the pool. Start at one end, do a good streamline push off and swim
half way down the pool and stop. Swim from halfway to the far wall
doing a good, fast flip turn and stop. Come back stopping halfway
again and sprint the last 121/2 practicing a good race finish. All
swimming done at 85% speed, and practicing moving your hands
fast. Take a good deal of rest between swims so whatever you do, you
do it well, not fatigued.
Good luck at the races and if you cannot dream up a good taper
workout, try this one.
1. Warm up. 500 swim.
2. 2 X 200 swim, 80% sprint the 4th and 5th length.
3. 3 x 100 on 2:00 (or an interval 30 seconds longer than your
usual)
4. 8 x 75 with the first length a stroke other than free style such
as one you may be racing on a 30-50 second rest interval.
5. 8 x 25 ascending on 45 seconds. (Swim the first one fast and
each successive one slower)

Six steps to
swimming fast
effectively
By Wayne Goldsmith
1 Long strokes
The world’s fastest class freestylers, male and female, cover
approximately two meters in every stroke cycle (left arm
and right arm) at a speed of two meters per second.
2 Fast strokes
These top swimmers are able to complete around 50
stroke cycles per minute at top speed while maintaining
two meters per stroke.
3 Great skills
IN top level swimming, events are won or lost on competitive skills like dives, starts, turns, and finishes.
4 Excellent technique
Technique is a difficult thing to improve. It is generally
agreed that excellence in technique is a prerequisite for
fast swimming. Much of what we know about technical
excellence [has been] learned from studying movements
of champion swimmers.
5 Swim the above when fatigued
Swimming fast is not a problem. Swimming fast when it
really starts to hurt—that’s the problem.
6 Manage the pressure
This means swimming with technical excellence and control throughout the race despite the pressure..
How to accomplish the above
• Work on keeping strokes long and strong in training.
In every effort, ask, “ Could I do this with fewer
strokes?’
• Develop real speed by working hard during speed
work training and getting the best out of every
effort. Train fast to swim fast.
• Train as you would race. Do every turn, dive and
finish with power and controlled aggression.
• Complete drills with 100% concentration. Think
technique first at all times.
• Challenge yourself to swim fast when tired.
• Learn to enjoy pressure situations. Being nervous is
[or at least can be] a sign that something great is
about to happen.
Wayne Goldsmith is the sports science coordinator for
Australian swimming. For this article, he acknowledged the
work of Dr. Bruce Mason and his highly skilled team at the
Australian Institute of Sport Biomechanics Unit.

Technique’s article, “6 Steps to Greatness”

Weymouth Club
Masters
by Candy Angle
The Weymouth Club has started a Master’s swimming program. The club is conveniently located on the South
Shore in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Master’s swim coach Leslie Cooper heads the program. Leslie brings a
wealth of coaching experience and talent to the program. Leslie is certified by the American Swim Coaches
Association as a level 3 USA Swimming and Master’s coach. She is a member of the United States Master’s
coaches committee and has organized and staffed training camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado.
She is a nationally ranked Masters swimmer in the breaststroke and long distance freestyle.
The group swims Monday, Wednesday and Friday from
5:30 am to 6:45 am, and on Saturdays from 7:00 am to 8:30
am. Workouts consist of everything from freestyle to IM and
technique work. During the week, total yardage for a
session will be from 3,000-4,000 yards and on weekends
5,000 plus yards. The video camera is used to improve
technique.
Members vary in age and abilities, with triathletes making
up the majority of the group. The triathletes range in
distances from the sprint to the Ironman. Professional
Triathlete, Candy Angle, swims with a varying level of
swimmers and triathletes, Several of the triathletes will be
competing in their first Ironman this summer.
The Weymouth Club will begin construction this spring
on a new eight-lane 25 yard pool that the Master’s will use.
During the summer months, members are able to enjoy swimming outside. The Master’s program is free to all
members of the Weymouth Club. Members are able to enjoy all of the amenities the club has to offer. Non
Members pay a fee of $160.00 per three-month session.
The Weymouth Club is very assessable from routes 3 and 18. From route 3 south, take exit 16B (route 18S). At
the light (middle street), take a right and follow about a half-mile to Finnell drive. Take a right into Finnell drive
and the Weymouth Club located in the back of the industrial park.
For more information about the club or program, call 781-337-4600. If it is triathlon season, competitive
Masters events, or you just want to get into shape, come and join us. You will be glad you did.
From the Davis Aquatics Masters March
newsletter
The front page headline (DAM takes first prize in spin control)
DAM Captures Outdoor Team Title for 11th
Straight Year!
(DAM did acknowledge that NEM did have the most swimmers
and yards when even those indoor pools were included.)
From their front page story (another prize for reasons for loss)
1. Unusually strong stain of flu going around
2. High chlorine levels
3. Y2K hangovers
4. Great skiing conditions
5. An unusual winter
6. Overheated pools
7. Cold pools, etc.
6
NEM membership having best year.
With perhaps its greatest one-year percent increase in membership, the
New England Masters Swim Club was at 1,128 on March 27—its highest number of members ever. It was 900 last year, 578 in 1995, and 550
in 1990.
For NEM and throughout USMS, renewal rates are almost always in
the 60%-70% range. Through March 19 this year, NEM is 83%.
Saving $10 by keeping up with dub news on the web site and from
the emailed NEM E-News instead of subscribing to NEM News has
proven popular for 56% of the new members. For those renewing from
previous years, 21% are not receiving NEM News this year.
When it was decided to offer two membership rates, NEM News asked
many of those close to the club’s dynamics to predict the above percents of those who would opt for no NEM News. The editor won that
contest by a wide margin. Pam O’Neill came in second. A Bertucci’s pizza
was the fist prize. Honestly, it was not an insider deal but it was good.

Open water swims and considerably
more in the summer of ‘99
By Lisa Ackerman
By tradition, we will start summer early. In May. David
goes for a jog. This time, he lands in the middle of the
redwood forest, to complete the Avenue of the Giants
Marathon. Running with his brother (and for some reason
choosing to camp and not utilize a nearby hotel), they
return to base in five hours. Lisa chooses to forego rustic
bathrooms and retreats to grandma and grandpas where
they spoil son Robert properly.
Mother’s Day dawns, and David is off and running
again. This time he decides 4 hours and 27 miles is
enough, during Gilly’s 6 hour run for Breast Cancer. This
starts a summer trend of benefits for the Ackermans as
their next event is the Expedition Inspiration Walk for
Breast Cancer in early June. Robert attends—conquering
the trails in his baby jogger while mommy pushes him
along. In fact, he follows that the next weekend, with him
and mommy taking the baby jogger to a benefit walk for
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) while daddy does the
associated road race.
End of June, and the Ackermans head to Hopkinton for
the 6th Annual “Against the Tide” Swim for Breast Cancer.
Lisa “competes” and David “recreates”. Robert captures as
many of the mini beach ball promo items as he can.
July 4 and we’re off to Lowell for the Rynne 2 mile
swim in the Merrimack River. Lisa attends solo due to
early morning rains, but Super Daddy figures out all the
pieces, packs up Robert, stroller, diapers, snacks, spare
clothes, toys, and shows up in plenty of time, bringing
sunshine along. Lisa finishes as second woman, fifth
overall, and cruises in just ahead of a renowned world
record holder NEM in a fancy speed suit. (Sorry Dan R.).
Mid July and Lisa’s parents decide to visit on a
Saturday. Never shy to figure out a creative escape from
in-laws, David and some friends get on their bicycles in
our home town, Bedford, MA, and ride to Provincetown.
He also followed this with the Hillsboro, NH, 32 mile
mountain bike race in early August. Lisa learns not to
panic or worry as much.
Late August, and the Ackermans go off on their annual
trip to the Graniteman Triathlon in Wolfeboro, N.H.. Clad
in his ultra-sleek, 100% cotton, compression shorts to
hold in the belly, David embarks on the—mile swim—his
longest swimming effort in the last six months combined.
He finishes 8th swimmer, with only one girl ahead of him.
In the end, David is a respectable fourth in his age group,
22nd overall, not bad considering he’s “trained” for the
swim in the hot tub, only had time and enough sleep to
jog to the bathroom at work in the previous two weeks,
and had been using his bicycle to dry his shorts from spin
class.

April 2000
The first September sporting event for the Ackermans is
the Danny Oates 5K Road Race in our hometown of
Bedford. David runs, Lisa is race director, and Robert is
chief assistant in getting the race course signs out.
However, since we all know 5K is way too short for
David’s taste, he takes off the following weekend for
California to go on another little hike with his brother.
This one takes 14 hours and finds him surmounting Mt.
Whitney, a mere 14,494 feet, according to Lisa, above the
nearest public restroom. Lisa opted, again, to stay home
and live in luxury with plumbing. A few days after David’s
triumphant return to ground, and he’s off to Vermont, a
few miles lower, and atop a mountain bike this time. 50
miles in the woods later, he finishes the race respectfully,
and uninjured. Two big pluses.
All this brings us to the beginning of Fall, and the end
of the Ackerman summer. In fact, David and Robert go
jogging together much of the first week – that would be
Robert tearing through Bedford in the baby jogger- legs
dancing in the air. Lisa, meantime, was a bit sidelined
with some hip surgery. A degenerative bone disease
(Avascular Necrosis) slows the family schedule a few days
while she recuperates from having holes drilled in the
femur to hopefully forestall the decay process. Luckily, the
family orthopedic surgeon has advised much swimming
as therapy, and the most beneficial form of exercise.
Throughout the summer we did some “training”
through the streets of Bedford: Robert in his baby jogger,
Daddy pushes, Mommy rides a bicycle alongside. We also
spent a few of the sunny weekends at Walden where
Robert learned there are two beaches, and it’s tremendous fun to run back and forth between them. “Swimming” lessons at the local Bedford swimming hole tended
to evolve into Robert running through the water, out the
other side, and up to the playground slide. Mom also
became pretty adept at slides, tunnels and other assorted
playground equipment.
Seems like, as time goes on, our summer vacation
stories may have taken a little turn away from the
competitive zone, but certainly well within a more
important, unpredictable, and incredibly fun toddler zone!
Editor note: This is Lisa’s sixth annual report on the Ackerman
summers in and out of the water. When she is not busy with
this and a few other things, she compiles the annual list of
open water swims in New England that will soon be in NEM
News and on the NEM web site..

YMCA Nationals

Q. Is there an easy way to improve my stroke?
A. Yes. Stretching can give you a greater range of movement for a more
fluid stroke.
From the March/April 2000 issue of Fitness Swimmer (brian.riley@rodale.com)
Stand with your feet hip-wide apart and your hands at your side. Turn your left
palm away from your body and, bend your elbow, and lift your left arm up to
the middle of your back behind your shoulder blades. Now lift your right arm
straight up, bend your elbow, and reach down your back and try to touch the
finger tips of your left hand.
Work by contracting the muscle opposite from the one in the arm your trying
to stretech. Work slowly and without force. Hold on for one or two seconds, release and repeat 10 times, then switch hands. Figure which side is weaker and
and try to strengthen it so your shoulders are balanced, which will open all areas of your joint and increase your range of motion in all strokes.
For most swimmers, this exercise can be turned into a final warm-up by applying less force and doing more repetitions.
Editor note: If you are not able to get a firm finger or hand grasp behind you
back, hang a small towel from your right hand for your left hand to grab onto. In
time you may be able to throw out the towel.
In addition to pulling with hands (or towel) grasped, try gently tipping and rotating your upper torso while in the grasp. This is but one of many stretching
techniques swimmers have used for many years. Try others. At the least, they usually feel good while doing as well as afterward. Many smooth stroking swimmers
do an assortment of stretching techniques. Maybe they are their secret.
Contact your YMCA aquatic director or team coach.
