Mississippi River Trail (MRT)
The MRT is a 3,000-mile bicycle route that travels along the Mississippi River
through 10 states between Lake Itasca and the Gulf of Mexico. It roughly follows
the Great River Road with some deviations to avoid poor bicycling conditions.
The MRT through the La Crosse area follows the Great River State Trail (GRST)
north of Oak Forest Dr in Onalaska and regional route 5 south of Oak Forest Dr.
MRT signs have been installed in La Crosse, but they are small (3" x 5"), so keep
an eye out! The MRT in Minnesota is still under development.
Travel Barriers
Our enumerated regional routes and local routes were developed to provide the
most direct connections between communities and destinations under existing
conditions. We do, however, have three locations that provide some challenge
to continue along the route:
1) George St and St. Cloud. An on-road bicyclist on St. Cloud will need to use
the north sidewalk and crosswalk to cross George St.
2) East Ave and South Ave. A median diverter challenges westbound bicyclists
to position themselves to safely cross South Ave.
3) 27th St and railroad line. Bicyclists need to walk their bikes across the lowvolume railroad line to continue along this bypass of Losey Blvd.

The GRR has a minimum of 5-foot paved shoulders along its rural sections to
accommodate bicycle traffic. Unfortunately, its path through La Crosse, Onalaska,
and Holmen is not bicycle friendly. Because bicyclists currently use the GRR as a
bicycle route, we have it coded as a regional route. We do not, however, have it
enumerated as a recommended regional route through La Crosse. When the urban
sections through La Crosse are improved with bicycle accommodations, this route
will become regional route 5, which currently runs concurrently with regional
route 9 through the area. Until then, we recommend using regional route 9, which
follows the designated Mississippi River Trail (MRT).

The Great River Road (GRR)
The GRR is a National Scenic Byway that roughly follows the Mississippi
River through 10 states between Lake Itasca in Minnesota and the Gulf
of Mexico. Although we talk about the GRR in the singular, there are actually
two--one on each side of the Mississippi. The Wisconsin GRR through
La Crosse follows STH 35. The Minnesota GRR through Houston and Winona
Counties follows MN 16, MN 26, and TH 61.

Bikes on MTU
All Municipal Transit Utility (MTU) buses are equipped with bicycle
racks. Loading and unloading your bicycle on the rack is easy--and
free! Each rack will hold two standard bicycles. See the City of La
Crosse Web site at www.cityoflacrosse.org for routes and schedules.
Covered Bicycle Parking
Covered bicycle parking can be found in the Main St, Market
Square, and La Crosse Center Parking Ramps, and at the new
Grand River Station. The Main St and Market Square Parking
Ramps have bicycle lockers for rent for $10 per month by calling
789-7599. The Grand River Station has bicycle lockers available
for free with the use of a padlock.
Classic Bicycle Rides
Some of the most popular moderate-to-long-distance bicycle rides
that originate in La Crosse County have been mapped and
published in a convenient booklet that will fit into your bicycle map
holder. The 7 Rivers Region Cycling Maps Classic Rides can be
found at local tourism centers and bike shops or the maps and
directions for individual rides can be downloaded from
www.gatheringwaters.com.
