Title: PC FUN EXERCISES - Advice.
Purpose: To alert trainers to problems which have occurred in carrying out some of the
Exercises in PC Fun and PC Fun 101 and to offer advice on resolving them.
Note: Please do not distribute this document to students.
1. Overview
Most of the exercises in PC Fun are identical to the correspondingly numbered exercises in PC
Fun 101. Exercise 0 has been introduced into PC 101 to formalise the investigation of the
Desktop, an activity done informally in teaching a group from the PC Fun manual. Similarly, in
Exercise 1 in PC Fun 101 Virus Checking is introduced, whereas this is covered informally in
PC Fun group courses. Exercise 9 (“Ties & Hats”) is included in the PC Fun 101 manual but
must be issued separately in PC Fun classes. There is just one Homework exercise in PC Fun
101; the same as the Day 3 exercise in PC Fun manual. All other exercises should be identical.
2. Exercise 3
Add at the end of Step 3: Remove any spaces at the left-hand side of the lines of text.
3. Exercise 7
The wording of Step 1 in this exercise is confusing. Make the following change:
1. Word Wrap: To check the WordWrap setting in WordPad, on the Menu Bar click on
View and then on Options. The window below appears.
4. Exercise 9
Step 18: Note that to get the Insertion Point under the smiley, you may need to press the Enter
key two or three times.
D: Copy and Paste into WordPad Problems may occur in Part D when the smiley created is
cut and pasted into WordPad and you attempt to save the resultant file to a floppy disk. If the
smiley selected is too large, the file size may be too great for the resultant WordPad file to fit on
a floppy. To control the size of the smiley, make sure that the drawing area of the Paint screen is
set at its default value when Paint is first opened. Do the following:
On the Menu Bar, click on Image and then Attributes… In the Attributes dialog box that appears,
click on the Default button. This will return the size of the Drawing Area to 400 pixels wide by
300 pixels high (on an 800 x 600 monitor, which most Clubhouse computers are). If the smiley
is drawn to occupy no more than half this Drawing Area, and the selection in Step 15 is fairly
“tight”, the resultant WordPad file will be under 300KB and fit on the Fun floppy disk issued.
Note: Please understand that when a Paint Drawing/Painting is saved, every pixel on the
Drawing Area is saved. Whether it is the white background or a coloured object placed on the
background, the number of pixels involved is the same and so the size of the file saved depends
on the size of the Drawing Area saved and not the colour or complexity of the painting or
drawing that is on it.
5. Homework Exercise
Step 12: To get the Insertion Point below the picture of the System Properties dialog box, you
may need to press the Enter key two or three times.
Please inform students that the dialog box is a picture and cannot be edited in WordPad. You are
adding your name into a WordPad file and not into this System Properties picture.
