Give something up for others! Lenten Pack The Leprosy Mission is a Christian charity, that gives help in a practical way. It does this so that people will not just hear of the love of God, but they will know by our actions just how much Jesus cares for them. The Leprosy Mission Lenten Pack is inspired by the strap line of our logo: ‘A Channel for God’s love to people with leprosy.’ Lent is the time of year in the Christian Calendar when we reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice and contemplate giving up something we enjoy. During Lent this year The Leprosy Mission is challenging you not to just give something up, but to give something up for others! We are asking you walk alongside young people with leprosy, to help young people escape poverty and enable them to go to school. For just £10, you can buy the stationery, books and school bag that a child needs in order to be enrolled in a school in India. This resource focuses on the John 6v1-14, how a young boy gave something up for others and Jesus was able to do great things with that small sacrifice. The Leprosy Mission NI strives to follow this example and provide people affected by leprosy with a hope and a future. The lesson plan includes: Bible Lesson Reflection Story Activities Prayer Lenten Challenge Request a visit: If you would like someone from TLM to come out and share a little more about leprosy with your Sunday School Class contact the office on 02892 629500 or email lesley@tlm-ni.org Thank you so much for participating in this resource, we hope you will find it useful in encouraging your young people to share God’s love with others. Give something up for others! Lenten Stories Bible lesson: Giving what we have to God - John 6:1-14 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival was near. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. ” Reflection: The little boy in the story gave a small amount, but in God’s hands it was used to do really great things. When we choose to give to God what little we can, we know that God will use it to help people in really great ways. To give something up for others might seem very tough, but as this little boy showed, it will be very worthwhile! Life Lesson: Helping others Meet Pooja. She is 18 years old, when she was a child Pooja was diagnosed with leprosy. Leprosy is a disease associated with poverty. Leprosy starts by damaging the small nerves on the skin’s surface resulting in a loss of sensation. Without the gift of pain, everyday activities are fraught with danger. Unnoticed burns and ulcers can lead to permanent disability. Due to the inability to detect grit in the eye, blindness is a common consequence of leprosy. She was successfully cured. Her dad works at a roadside tea stall, and could not afford to send her to school. That’s where The Leprosy Mission helped. TLM funded her schooling, now she is hoping to study further and become a teacher. Pooja is very grateful to The Leprosy Mission both for providing a cure for her leprosy, and giving her the opportunity to get an education. As a result she has been able to lift herself and her family out of poverty. Give something up for others! Lenten CHALLENGE, CRAFT AND PRAYER Lenten Challenge THE HARD BIT! Something Fishy What you need: toilet roll tubes, string, felt tips, cello-tape, sheet of A4 card, scissors Step by step guide What you do: This is a simple craft. Take a cardboard tube (such as a toilet paper roll) and flatten it. Then cut it into strips. You’ll end up with rugby ball shaped rings. Cut the ring apart at one fold, cut 2 slits, and fit together in the shape of Jesus fish. Once you have your basic Jesus fish shape, you can decorate it however you want. To make your own mobile, just cut a strip of card and staple it into a loop. Then punch some holes for hanging. Just tie some string around the fish. Hang them from the holes in your card at different heights. You’ll need to punch 3 holes in the top as well and suspend it from more string so you can hang it up. Give something up for others!
