Specification of GNC160 NI-CD BATTERY PACK FOR LACMTA TRAINS
1.0 Battery Type
GNC160 NI-CD BATTERY PACK
The battery shall be constituted of open (vented), low maintenance sintered / pbe nickel-cadmium cells, and
shall comply with IEC 60623, fourth edition, 2001-09. The cells shall be connected in series or parallel into
crates / trays.
2.0 Plates
The positive plate shall be of the sintered type obtained by sintering a paste of nickel powder, mixed with
deionized water, onto a thin perforated nickel-plated strip followed by chemical impregnation of nickel
hydroxide onto a porous nickel structure.
The negative plate shall be of the plastic bonded type obtained by a coating of slurry consisting of cadmium
oxide mixed with a plastic binder onto a thin perforated nickel-plated strip.
Graphite shall not be used in the plates.
All nickel-plated steel plate tabs shall be seam welded onto the plates to ensure high current transfer and
maximum strength.
The cell plate groups shall be bolted to the positive and negative terminal posts accordingly.
3.0 Electrolyte:
The electrolyte shall be an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) containing additives; the
3
density of electrolyte is 1.25g/cm .
4.0 Separators:
Type: PPAT. The cell separator shall be a multi-layer type consisting of a micro-porous polymer and
non-woven felt to provide an optimum balance between performance, reliability and long life, and to also act
as a barrier between the + / - plates to prevent the oxygen generated by the positive plate from reaching the
negative plate.
5.0 Cell Containers and Crates / Trays:
Container and crates of battery: special PP material is composed by fire-protection, flame retarding,
non-toxic, non-halogen and anti-aging, outer case materials comply with UL94-V0 classification.
6.0 Vent:
Install special joint of injection on injection hole of cover, make several single cells connect in series to form
central water injection system, control each maintenance electrolyte position efficiently, prevent loss of
evaporation of electrolyte, extend maintenance period.
7.0 Terminals:
The terminal posts shall be made of nickel-plated copper or nickel-plated steel #45 to achieve the highest
mechanical strength and the lowest internal electrical resistance.
The positive and negative terminals shall be threaded and marked by color-coded washers as follows:
• Red for the positive pole.
• Blue or black for the negative pole.
In order to protect the battery terminals from external accidental short-circuits resulting from any metallic

item falling on top of the battery, insulating plastic connector covers with “O” shape shall be provided.
8.0 Connectors:
All intercell rigid connectors shall be of high quality nickel-plated copper.
9.0 Charging and discharge:
When charging at a single rate mode, the batteries shall be able to charge using any value in the range of
1.45 – 1.60V/cell for 8 hours.
Before starting the train, the charger/charging machine charge the battery in the following three
procedures:
Constant current: charging at constant maximum current;
Constant voltage: charging the battery at preset voltage, meanwhile, battery adopts voltage sensor
to test data to maintain charge voltage of charger;
Float charge: when battery reach fully charged condition after charging and the charge current is
detected to be less than one critical value, the charger will decrease the set voltage at some proportion,
float charge at low current for battery, and ensure the electrical performance of battery to recovery fully.
Take temperature change into consideration while adjust output voltage. Controlling module of
charger can monitor output current. If output current exceeds limited preset current value, it will decrease
output voltage to control the output current to limited value. Maximum limited current can be regulated to
32A (0.2ItA).
10.0
Topping-up Intervals:
Adopt centralized water injection method, request to use distilled water or soften water
z Connect water outlet of water injection machine and automatic water inlet of water injection
system of battery;
z When the water in injection loop that flow back into water injection machine exceeds 1 liter,
the water injection is finished;
z Water injection can be accomplished by virtue of self-gravity of water, or take advantage of
pump provided by battery supplier.
Maintenance notes:
z Only use water to clean battery, forbid using iron wires brush or any other solvent to clean
battery;
z Check the situation of all post heads, coat them with a neutral Vaseline or anti-corrosion oil
recommended by supplier on pole bolts to protect bolt to not be corroded.
