GUIDE FOR COLLEGES & EXAMINERS
aesthetic treatments practical examination
OPTION A (Other options are scaled down versions of this)
Time allowed 3 hours 30 mins maximum
The School/College must ensure suitable clients are available to receive the treatments
required for this examination. See Examination Regulations of the Education Handbook.
1.
Consultation
The examiner will observe the consultation procedure to include checks for contraindications, medical history and lifestyle of the client. Client needs must be identified
and all precautions to treatments must be observed.
2.
Cleanse
The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the working area is correctly and
hygienically prepared prior to the treatment being undertaken.
The candidate is also responsible for the suitable preparation and care of the client
prior to treatment. The client should be wearing make-up prior to the examination so
that the candidate may demonstrate effective removal. Cleansing of the eyes should
not irritate them. Movements should be continuous and rhythmical, using the correct
pressure. The examiner will look for a professional sequence covering all areas of
the face and neck.
3.
Skin Care/Analysis
The candidate will be expected to demonstrate control and correct use of the light
magnifier/wood lamp and to demonstrate skills of verbal communication in
determining the skin type with the client. The examiner will look for correct analysis
of the skin and a plan for treatment of electrical, massage, mask and make-up.
4.
Exfoliation
The examiner will look for the correct selection of product for the client’s skin type.
Professional and appropriate methods of application and removal should be
demonstrated. The examiner will observe the skin reaction to ensure that it is not
over-stimulated.
5.
Eyelash and Eyebrow Tinting
Written documentation must be provided to show that the client has had a skin
(patch) test, with a negative result prior to the examination day. The candidate will
demonstrate an eyelash OR eyebrow tint. This will be decided after discussion with
the examiner.
The examiner will look for thorough preparation of the area and skin protection.
Application of the tint should not touch the skin. All tint should be thoroughly
removed ensuring the skin is not marked. The area should not suffer any irritation at
any time. The examiner will check the finished result ensuring the tint has been
successful.
N.B. Candidates should utilise the time effectively, whilst the eyelash tint is
developing.

6.
Eyebrow Trim
The candidate should demonstrate thorough hygiene practices and preparation of
the area and discuss the client’s requirements prior to tweezing. Eyebrows should
be measured. Skin should be held taut and the handling of the tweezers should
demonstrate swift professional removal of hair, with the minimal discomfort to the
client. The examiner will observe the finished result. The eyebrows should be
suitable for the client and an even shape. Client care will be observed at all times.
7.
Electrical Treatment
The examiner will discuss with the candidate suitable electrical treatments for the
client and a selection will be made at the discretion of the examiner, based on one
treatment of the following four (vacuum suction, galvanic, high frequency, NMES).
The examiner will look for safe practice in preparation, during and at the end of the
treatment. The candidate should explain the treatment clearly to the client and keep
them informed throughout. Use of the electrodes or attachments and current
adjustment will be observed. Client care will be observed at all times. Aftercare and
homecare advice will be given.
8.
Massage
The candidate should demonstrate a professional massage sequence to the face,
neck and shoulders, adapted to meet the client’s needs and skin type. The
massage should show all the five classical massage movements, demonstrating
correct rate, pressure, rhythm and technique. The time allocated for this massage is
a maximum of 10 minutes. Client care will be observed at all times.
9.
Mask
The examiner will look for a professional commercial mask(s) application suitable for
the client’s skin type. The candidate should demonstrate careful and complete
removal of the mask observing the effectiveness of the mask, checking for normal
skin reaction. Client care will be observed at all times. The candidate should utilise
the time effectively whilst the face mask is on. Aftercare and homecare advice for
the whole facial should be given at the completion of the mask.
10.
Make-Up
The examiner will look for professional and hygienic application of a day make-up.
Foundation and blusher should be blended and eye make up balanced. Lipstick
evenly applied and balanced with regard to the rest of the make-up, in texture and
colour. The candidate should demonstrate client care at all times consulting the
client with regard to make-up choice and preferences.
11.
Manicure or Pedicure
The client should be wearing enamel on the toenails and fingernails. A full manicure
or partial pedicure (this will be allocated by the examiner) must be demonstrated
within 30 minutes, to include removal of enamel, filing, cuticle work, hand/foot
massage and dark coloured enamel application. The examiner will look for
consultation regarding client’s needs, even shaping of nails, careful and effective
cuticle work, massage and enamel application of base coat, colour and top coat. An
enamel should be selected after consultation with the client. Speedy preparation of
both the work area and the client are essential. Client care will be observed at all
times.

client care, speedy and hygienic preparation of the skin and the correct client
positioning for each area. It is recommended that gloves be worn particularly for
underarm and bikini line waxing. The area should be supported, application and
removal technique professional, and the candidate should explain the procedures to
the client. Hair removal should be successful, with minimal product use and
continued hygienic practices together with a normal skin reaction. In addition to this,
the examiner will expect candidates to be working commercially. Aftercare advice
should be given to the client.
