SPRING ……………………………….1950
I wonder what you’re doing, as I write this
little rhyme,
I wonder if you’re dreaming, wide awake,
I’ll bet you often stop your work and take a
little time
To let your memory wander to the lake.
“I wonder if the cottage roof has stood the
winter’s snow?
Or if perhaps the windows are all sound?
I wonder if the engine in the motor-boat
will go?
Or if the flowers are peeping through
the ground?
Did I leave the keys at Scovil’s or bring
them back to town?
I wonder if the Eaton order came?
I’ll have to write and ask him if the new
electric stove
Is safe inside or standing in the rain”?

So . . . As your mind is turning to the cottage,
there in town,
I’m thinking too about the summer time.
The intervening months will soon roll round,
Then you’ll rest up, while I’ll be wearing
down . . . I hope

A Perspective on Portland
Doug Bond March 2012
Through a window of a passenger coach on a train
chugging along the Canadian Northern Line from Smith
Falls to Strathcona Yard (Napanee), Portland station
looked like any of many rural depots of the early 1900’s.
There were usually a few box cars on the siding, one
maybe being loaded with cheese boxes filled with 90
pound cheddars from factories in Newboyne or
Portland. Maybe some of the workers of Bolton’s Mill
would be loading a flat car with lumber. During WW II,
local farmers such as the Barkers and the Mattices kept
some hives of bees to pollinate their fields of clover and
to provide scarce sugar at the time of rationing. That
lonely box car way off at the far end of Portland siding
station might contain 24 boxes of very lively Alabama
bees eager to get at Ontario spring-time flowers.
Twenty-three of those boxes might be still intact.

A small, single-storey building gave shelter to station
master and light cargo. On the platform a few relatives
and friends might be eagerly anticipating arrivals.
Sheltered from rain and snow, a few passengers might
await departure, maybe somebody’s son, a young
soldier off to distant war, This scene might have been
at Crosby Station on the B. & W. Line (Brockville,
Westport and S.S.M.R.R.) or at Snow Road Station on the
“Kick & Push” (Kingston – Pembroke R.R.). Inside the
station you would hear the ciphered clicking of the
telegraph. You could inhale the eternal aromas of coal
burning a pot-bellied stove, of the fragrances of lumber
crating and paper packaging and of the incenses of
tobacco that were universal to railway depots. The add
the ultimate factor, the station agent such as Robert
Goudy who meted out parcels wrapped in brown paper,
those magical cubes that arrived on December 20th from
T. Easton and Co. To Kids of all ages, he was a.k.a. S.
Claus. In all seasons, he shared at least an iota of the
joys of arrivals and the tears of departures. Sometimes
those expressions were reversed. He shared with a
father and his young son the warmth of his nearby
home on one frosty winter’s night of the 1930’s as they
waited for the late train to Ottawa. But try on the cloak
of emotion as the station master decoded those dots
and dits of his telegraph receiver when it spelled out
“We regret to inform you that …”
This was a
communication repeated too many times at Portland
Depot during too many wars. How each agent in each
station in each community dealt with such
communications bereft families was very personal,
often quite profound. A community, any community, is
much more that the tally of its buildings. Look through
the lens of heritage appreciation to that little depot that
once stood at the end of Station Road. Then and there,
Portland Station took on a quality unique among
buildings.

More of Dave’s Handy Hints…!
⇝ To keep the “Stainless” in stainless steel pots etc. rinse with pure white vinegar and sprinkle with salt
while still wet, then rub with a soft cloth.
⇝ To clean a cast-iron pot, fill with warm water and drop in a couple of denture-cleaning tablets and let sit for
1 hour then rinse and dry. Never use soap on cast-iron as cast-iron is porous and will absorb soap particles.
⇝ To get grimy white socks white again try boiling them in water with a slice or two of lemon.
⇝ To remove tar from your car spray with WD-40 and let sit for a few minutes when wipe with a soft cloth.
WD-40 will not harm your paint.
⇝ To prevent candles from dripping on your tablecloth or furniture put them in the freezer before
lighting them and they won’t drip nearly as much.
