A First Impression from a New Resident & Trustee Board Member Special points of interest: College Essay Writing Class Thursday, May 19th Annual Poetry Night! Wednesday, May 25th Local Author Visit Michael Sears Saturday, June 11th My husband, myself and our 2 dogs moved to Sea Cliff in July 2015 and I was determined to find opportunities to become involved for the common good of our new community. Not unexpectedly, the North Shore area has many great volunteer organizations and I started soon to look around. I instantly joined the Sea Cliff Village Library as a reader and about 5 months after our arrival, I received an email announcing that the Library had an opening for a new Trustee. This appeared to be a perfect opportunity for me to get involved since I have always thought of the Library as the backbone of the community and was already visiting quite frequently, enjoying the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. So it went; I was just recently sworn in and now look forward to working under the guidance of our Library Director Arlene Nevens and with the Sea Cliff Library and Village Trustees to meet our goals and the needs of our community. As we are witnessing Mr. Spring doing his very best to welcome us into the next outdoor season, please do not forget to visit our fabulous Sea Cliff Library! There are so many resources readily available for your use at home: in addition to the appealing vast array of books in print, there are E-books, movies, DVDs, CDs and even Regional Museum passes available! The Library maintains computers for you to access downloadable media during your visit as well as a fax machine, scanner and color copier. We hope to see you also in one of the workshops and educational events the library organizes! Sea Cliff Village Library May/June 2016 Volume 9 Issue 3 Page 4 Friends FUN-raisers On April 6 more than 100 supporters attended the fundraiser and social evening sponsored by the Friends of the Sea Cliff Library. The event, the first of its type, was held at Still Partners and featured a book signing, raffle and live music. Sea Cliff author Andrea Doering was on hand to sign her latest work, The Children’s Table, the proceeds of which she kindly donated to the library. Local residents generously contributed a wide variety of enticing prizes and gift certificates to the raffle, making ticket sales brisk. Musician Jon Goldstein graciously played his acoustic guitar throughout the evening. The result of the team effort by our volunteers was a capacity crowd that included many first-time supporters of the library. On April 16, under the indefatigable leadership of Mike Lennon, the Friends sponsored the first Offbeat Artifacts sale of the year. The weather cooperated, and Sea Cliffians thronged to the Village Green and took home many unusual treasures. Proceeds from both fundraisers will help pay for the many family museum passes the library offers to its patrons. On June 4, in conjunction with Garage Sale Day, the Friends will sponsor its annual Book Sale on the Village Green. The library will begin accepting book donations on May 2 (no textbooks or books in poor condition, please). Volunteers are needed to help sort books. All are welcome.
