AteamofresearchersatIndianInstituteofTechnology,Gandhinagar(IIT-Gn)hasdevelopedanextremelytransparentnanomaterial.Thenano-sheetsarerichinboronunlikegraphenethatisbasedoncarbon.Theboronmakesthemnotonlyhighly
transparent,italsoprovidesmaterialscientistsawonderfulplatformtoutilizeitsrichchemistry.
ProfessorofChemicalengineeringKabeerJasuja,wholedtheresearch,saidthesenanosheetsarelikeultrathinsandwiches
withmetalatomstrappedbetweenboronplanesthatare20,000timesthinnerthanhumanhair.
"Suchthinnessgivesthemunusualproperties:theydonotabsorbvisiblelightbutstronglyabsorbultravioletlight.Thiscan
proveveryusefulinmakingUV-blockingcoatingsthatstillallowvisiblelighttopass,"saidJasuja.
He added that not much was known about these nano-sheets yet. But it would be worth exploring if, like their optical
properties, their mechanical and thermal properties are also similarly at extremes, said Jasuja. His team of researchers
including doctoral student Saroj Kumar Das, Master's student Amita Bedar, and undergraduate student intern Aadithya
Kannan.
Theteamusedawell-knownsuperconductor,magnesiumdiboride.Acrystalofmagnesiumdiboridecontainsmillionsof
boronplanespackedwithMgatomswithintheinter-galleryspaces.Theyplacedtheparentmaterialinwaterandapplied
highfrequencysoundwavesthatresultedinpartialdisplacementoftheMgatoms;thisloosenedtheparentstructureand
layersstartedpeelingofftoyieldboron-richnanosheets.
Thisprocessisverysimilartoslidingadeckofcardsinacontrolledwaysuchthateachcardgetsseparatedfromtheother.The
researchersfoundthatwhilebeingpeeledofffromtheparentstructure,thenanosheetsacquiredoxygenbasedgroupsfrom
waterthatnotonlyallowedthemtokeepswimminginwaterforseveralweeks,italsogiftedthemthemarvelousattributeof
fluorescence.

WiththenumberofGATEaspirantsexpectedtotouchanastronomical1.4millionin2014,theIITshavedecidedtogo
online.AbhijitChaudharianalysesthemeritsanddemeritsofthecomputerbasedtest.
AnengineeringclassroominIITMadrasisusuallyameltingpotofdifferentculturesasthispremierinstituteplayshostto
studentsfromacrossthecountry.Infact,onlyaround7%ofstudentsinIIT-MarefromTamilNadu.Asthereisnodearthof
topengineeringinstitutesinTamilNadu,IIT-Misnottheonlyoptionforaspiringengineersfromthestate.
IITsmaybethedefaultchoiceformanystudents,butinTamilNadutheyhavealternativestopickandchoosetofulfiltheir
engineeringdreams.Variousengineeringinstitutesinthestatehavereceivedlakhsofapplications.Thiscouldbeoneof
thereasonsbehindTamilNaduregisteringalowernumberofcandidatesappearingforJEEwhencomparedtoother
states.
Ofthe3,930studentswhoqualifiedforJEE(Advanced)inthestate,morethan1,100studentsdidnotappearforthe
examination.IIT-Mfacultymemberssaidmanystudentsoptoutofappearingfortheexamiftheyscoredalowerrank,
whileotherswouldhaveappliedtootherengineeringinstitutes.
InstituteslikeVIT,SRMandSSNsaythenumberofapplicationstheyreceivehaveincreasedovertheyears.Thisyear,more
thantwolakhcandidatesregisteredforVITEngineeringEntranceExamination(VITEEE),whileanestimated1.75lakh
applicationswerereceivedbySRMUniversityforitsentranceexaminationtotheBTechcourse.AfacultymemberofSRM
Universitysaidthisyeartheinstitutesawa40%riseinthenumberofapplicationsfromlastyear's1.25lakhapplications.
At22,983,TamilNaduhasthesecondhighestnumberofstudentsapplyingtotheuniversity.

(ECE), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Mechanical Engineering (ME) (EE), Electrical
Engineering,InstrumentationEngineeringandProductionandIndustrialEngineering)werepaperbasedwhilethe
remainingstreamswereonline.

Thetestwillbeconductedinmultiplesessions(12)spreadoveronemonth,startingfromFeb2ndtoMarch2nd.It
willbeheldonalternateSaturdaysandSundays,withtwosessionsperday.

Paperswithmorenumberofapplicants(mostlikelyECE,CS,MEandEE)willhavemultiplesessions.Thismeansthat
therewillbeseparatepapershavingasimilarlevelofdifficultyinthesestreams.

Thetestwillhavenumericalanswerquestionsapartfrommultiplechoicequestions.

TheapplicationfeehasbeenincreasedtoRs1500forgeneralandOBCcategorystudentswhileitisRs700forfemale
andSC/STstudents.Lastyear,theapplicationfeewaswaivedoffforfemaleapplicants.

Firstly,atsuchahugescale,anonlineexamisrelativelyeasiertoadminister.Comparedtoapaperandpenciltest,the
chancesofhumanerrorsarealsoreduced.

Inanofflinetest,therearechancesofpaperpilferageorleakingofthequestionpapers.Thisisalmosteliminatedin
anonlinetest.

Anonlinetestalsoleadstofasterandrelativelyerrorfreeresultsprocessing.

Lastly,italsoresultsinhugepapersaving,andisconsiderablymoreenvironmentfriendlythanapaperandpencil
test.

Oneissuewithadministeringtheexamisthelackofinfrastructureinthecountry.Asaresult,theIITsareforcedto
conductthetestinmultiplesessions,spreadoveramonth.

ThismeansthattheyhavetocreatemultiplepapersforsomestreamslikeECE(foursessions),ME(foursessions),CS
(three sessions), EE (three sessions) and Civil Engineering (two sessions). Creating multiple papers containing
dissimilarquestions(tomaintainthesurpriseelementacrossthesessions)andyetmaintainingasimilarlevelof
difficultywillbeamajorchallenge.
Forstreamswithmultiplesessions,thescorewouldprobablybetheonlyparametertocompareperformanceof
studentsacrossmultiplepapers.TheallIndiarankmaynotbeveryrelevantforthesestreams.
Implications
Withtheexamgoingonline,alotofpracticewouldbeneededtogetfamiliarwithacomputerbasedtest.Apeculiar
problem that can arise in GATE, where some questions might need workings to be done on a complicated
figure/diagram,isthatofreplicatingthediagram.Studentsmightneedtopracticeonthat.Incaseofapaperbased
testthesamecanbedoneonthequestionpaperitself.
Withthetesthavingnumericalanswerquestions,whereinonehastoenterananswer,insteadofchoosingbetween
fouroptions,guessworkiseliminatedandhenceonecannotbetonluckonasolutionbasedoneliminationofwrong
options.
