Data Sheet
General
The RS range of dataloggers consists of several instruments
with widely varying specifications, allowing customers to
select the appropriate model for their application.
The number of channels available ranges from one to a top
of the range model with 8 analogue and 5 digital channels
which will accept varying voltage and current inputs and Pt
100 (3 or 4 wire) temperature sensor inputs.
Gemini Dataloggers
Available from Gemini are six categories of miniature, selfcontained dataloggers; each offering specific advantages to
users; three different softwares and two RS-232 connection
cables.
All dataloggers use the same powerful, inexpensive,
software package-GLM (RS stock no. 394-4672) to start units
logging. Units are then disconnected from the computer for
deployment where required. The same software is used to
offload and analyse data. Some dataloggers within the range
can be customised to alter the units of measurement using
the Re-educator software (RS Stock no. 171-786). Full details
of each software is shown under the appropriate heading
below. Units to measure some parameters (for example
PT100) are available in more than one range of loggers,
allowing customers to choose the unit type best suited to
their needs.
Units maintain real time, taking the time/date from the PC
used to start the logging run. Dataloggers are powered by
1⁄2 AA sized lithium 3.6v battery, that is user replaceable.
Service packs (replacement battery, ‘O’ ring seal and
desiccant) for each range are available from Gemini.
Logged data is stored in EEPROM - offering the advantage
that recorded data is not lost, even should the power fail.
Standard dataloggers offered include Temperature,
Humidity and Shock, while special dataloggers are available
with industry standard inputs such as mA or Counts.
Additional models (including two 2-channel units) are
available. For quotation please call 01536 444101.
All Gemini dataloggers offer as standard:
3 stop options (never (overwrite oldest readings first)
when full or after a number of readings)
Software set delayed start-can be relative [2 hours] or
actual [Monday 5th 9.00am]
Non-volatile memory
User selectable logging interval
Data available in graphical, tabular or statistical format
Note: A 9 pin to 25 pin D connector adaptor is available
(RS Stock no. 218-289) as are replacement batteries

Dataloggers
Tinytalk
4 versions of Tinytalk, the original member of the Gemini
family of loggers, are available from the catalogue. These are
shown in the table below.
Dataloggers in the Tinytalk range offer 1800 Readings, small
size, light weight and economical cost. Units have a long
battery life and are ideal for long term monitoring in air
ducts, stability testing and environmental research. Tinytalk
units are also widely used by schools, laboratories and
Universities. Units are supplied in 35mm canisters and are
connected to an RS-232 interface via a 3.5mm jack socket
fitted to the PCB.
The high temperature PT100 version (RS stock no. 196-7392)
is supplied with a detachable PT100 probe, which plugs
directly into the canister via a 2.5mm jack socket. The sensor
on the RH version (RS stock no. 196-7409) is fitted at the end
of the canister. The Volt version (RS stock no. 196-7421) can
be re-educated using Re-Educator software (RS stock no.
171-786). All versions are easily removed from the 35mm
housing, allowing use with customised enclosures or in OEM
applications.
Note: When considering enclosures for specific Tinytalk
applications, consideration should be given to the
inertia, insulating properties and time constants.

Tinytag Ultra
Tinytag Ultra dataloggers offer all the features customers
expect to find in a Tinytag at a lower cost and in a case
designed specifically to meet customers’ requirements. In
addition to the standard features outlined above, units can be
set to log in seconds or minutes, store 7900 readings and
offer two software set, programmable alarm limits. When
operating in ‘Minute’ mode, units can be set to record
minimum or maximum readings seen in the logging interval.
Data can also be offloaded while the unit continues to log giving users the facility to interrogate the unit at any point
(particularly important where alarm limits are seen to have
been exceeded) whilst retaining the full data trail. Tinytag
Ultra RH datalogger (RS stock no. 326-5676) is designed to
have a fast response time and a very low temperature
dependency.

Tinytag Plus
Upgraded from the original specification, Tinytag Plus
loggers now store 15900 readings and, in addition to the
standard features, loggers are fitted with ‘Trigger Start’
option. Small, powerful, robust and easy to use, loggers from
this range are the ideal choice for most professional logging
applications. All have two software programmable alarm
limits and, when logging in Minute mode, can have data
2
retrieved while units continue to log. All Tinytag Plus
dataloggers are housed in the same style IP68 casing and
once the connecting caps are correctly secured loggers (not
RH units) are waterproof to 15m.
The two 12-bit resolution Tinytag Plus temperature
dataloggers give improved resolution and overall accuracy.
Tinytag Plus shock loggers are ideally suited to use in
transporting fragile or sensitive materials - from soft fruits
and biscuits, to computer components and plasma screens.
Fitted with a single axis accelerometer, the sensor measures
100% of shock intensity in the vertical axis, reducing to 70%
of shock intensity at 90° to that axis. The case used for this
version has two mounting flanges, making it easily secured in
any location. Ideally, units are designed to be launched and
offloaded in situ, using the Psion Workabout and Tinylink
software, avoiding the recording of any extraneous impacts.

Tinytag Plus - Re-ed
These dataloggers are designed to accept Industry standard
inputs and have the ability to be customised by using Reeducator software. Tinytag Plus Re-ed loggers enable users
to monitor any parameter where the chosen sensor output
matches the input of a datalogger from the range. Based on
Tinytag Plus dataloggers and with the same range of
features, loggers in this range record in mV, mA or pulses
(Volt unit also available, see ‘additional units’ above) and
offer a very cost effective way of collecting data from a wide
range of sources.
To use - simply identify a sensor to measure the parameter
needed, with an ‘Industry Standard’ output to suit a logger in
the range and match to the appropriate logger. When used
in conjunction with Re-educator software it is straightforward
matter to modify these loggers so that they show the correct
units of measurement, title and lookup table for the
parameter being monitored. Once modified, as with all other
loggers in the range units are launched and offloaded using
standard OTLM software.
It is possible to store more than one set of parameters in each
datalogger, allowing full use to the made of the unit where
different areas may need to be monitored at different times.
Reconnecting to Re-educator software permits users to
select the ‘preferred’ parameters before using the
datalogger. All Re-educable loggers are supplied with
connector and lead to allow for termination of external
sensors.
In addition, Tinytag Plus Count loggers are fitted with a
‘divide by’ counter which, via Re-educator software, can be
programmed from 0 to 255. This enables the pulse per
interval to be raised to approx. 65,000.
Note: This will cause a corresponding loss in the accuracy
figure
1502843023
With the Tinytag Plus XP mA (Extra power) datalogger, users
can power sensors from the datalogger. Loggers are fitted
with a large internal battery providing 2.7Ah at 12V. The
datalogger sends a signal to this supply to power the external
sensor approximately 8 seconds prior to taking a reading to
‘warm up’ the sensor. Once a reading is taken, and at all
other times it is switched off, thus extending the battery life.

Signalogger-PC (RS stock no. 213-234)
Presentation
● Simplest possible solution to your multichannel logger
requirements
● No need to open computer, the Signalogger-PC uses the
standard serial port
● Ideal for portable applications
● No power supply or separate mains required
● Software for control, acquisition, storage and display
included
● Selectable voltage, mA or thermistor inputs
● Compatible with any PC, including notebooks
The Signalogger-PC is an integrated eight channel data
logging system for your PC. Its simplicity and low cost
contrast with its flexibility and software refinement. The
Signalogger-PC is an excellent choice for all simple
applications where the aim is to get to the results with the
minimum of fuss and time. Because it uses a very small
external hardware unit, the only work needed to be up
and running is to connect the RS-232 cable to the serial
port on the PC and load the software. Each input can be
configured to accept either 0-4V, 4-20mA or thermistor
inputs, thus offering the potential to connect directly into
a wide range of application areas. The software supplied
with each Signalogger-PC allows you to create graphical
displays in full colour (if a colour monitor is used) and in
a selection of formats. You can even display in bar graph
format with programmable ‘min’ and ‘max’ limits for
process control or gauging applications.
● Portable – Requires no extra power supply because it
uses the RS-232 port on a PC to provide the little power it
needs. This means that the Signalogger-PC is ideally
suited to datalogging with a portable PC in the field.
● Complete – Supplied with all the necessary
cables, software and hardware to begin work
immediately. You can acquire data, store it to disk,
display the results and produce printouts ready for your
report without anything other than a PC.
● Software – The menu driven software is specifically
designed for ease of use whilst retaining the flexibility to
optimise signal acquisition and display. Graphical chart,
bargraph, statistical or tabular modes are provided so
that the results can be presented in the format best suited
to your needs.
There are five main modes of display:
● Graphical (Y-T). Plots inputs against time
● Selectable number of channels displayed, up to all eight
● Zoom into any area marked with cursors*
● Switch between whole record and expanded portion with
one keystroke (not CGA).
● Graphical (X-Y). Any input can be user selected to
provide X axis coordinate. All other inputs are plotted as
Y coordinate values. Provides X-Y displays equivalent to
Lissajou figures on a scope. Other features are as Y-T
mode above.
● Tabular. Tabulates sample values in vertical columns
with time shown in LH column.
● Bargraph. Real time display with each input represented
by twin vertical bargraphs. One bar shows current value,
the other shows exponential moving average. Software
allows setting of nominal zero, + full scale, – full scale, +
overrange level,– overrange level and averaging factor.
● Statistical*. Computed data relating to each channel can
be displayed. The statistics are:
Minimum
Maximum
Median
Average
Standard deviation
Coefficient of deviation
RMS
Crest factor
In addition, a histogram is displayed graphically showing
amplitude density.
Signal acquisition
The Signalogger-PC can sample the signals, store the results
and update the display concurrently at rates from one per
second to one per hour. This means that very long term
recordings can be made without the need for huge
memories or large disks. For instance, sampling all eight
channels at once per hour, 24 hours a day for a whole month
will require only 54Kbytes.
Additional features
● Each file name, comments and notes can be
tagged to each record
● Each input can be rescaled in engineering units with
offset and multiplying factor
● A recall mode allows any files on disk to be recalled,
displayed and printed
● Sampling period control from 1 second to 1 hour in 1
second increments
● Programmable logging inhibit band. Log data to disk
only when any channel is outside preset limits
● Two TTL alarm outputs toggled when any channel
exceeds present limits
● External sample trigger using any specified channel.
Import/Export. The data is stored as an ASCII file. Export to
standard spreadsheets and engineering/technical packages
is straightforward. Similarly, data can be imported and
displayed.

RS Low Cost Temperature Data Logger
The introduction of this product brings datalogging within
everyone’s range - providing all the components of a
temperature data logging system at an exceptionally low
price. The hardware and software for this package has been
specifically designed for RS Components by leading
datalogger manufacturer, with ease of use and robustness in
mind.
Loggers are housed in a round IP53 case, 30mm high x
55mm diameter and weighing approximately 70g. The
operating range is -20 to +75° with overall accuracy across
the range of 1°C. Units store 2000 readings and can record
in either Centigrade (resolution 0.5°) or Fahrenheit
(resolution 1°F). The choice is made in the software. Loggers
are powered by a lithium cell and give a battery life in
excess of 6 months with normal use. The minium logging
interval is 1 second, the maximum 18 hours.
The full package (RS stock no. 326-7379) contains a data
logger, communications cable and PC software - everything
needed to start datalogging. The datalogger is also available
separately (RS stock no. 326-7385) to allow user who have
already purchased the full package to expand their system
as needed.
The software is compatible with Windows 95, 98 or NT and is
designed to lead the inexperienced datalogger user with
helpful hints on screen. Communication between the PC and
the data logger is by means of the communications cable and
an RS-232 port, at a baud rate of up to 9600.
The logger is initialised using a PC and the software and
cable supplied.
The recording cycle is started by means of a push button on
the datalogger. After recording, the data is retrieved using
the PC. The logger can then be initialised for a new
recording cycle. Loggers are fitted with an audible alarm,
the level of which is set during the initialisation.
A unique number can be programmed into each as an
identifier. Loggers give an audible ‘battery low’ warning and
