Horst Gras VP - International Operations Financial crisis, recession, part-time work – these are the keywords which we have been hearing daily in the past months. Economic institutes, financial analysts and other experts surpass themselves almost daily with new negative forecasts. I don’t think this is helpful in the present economic crisis. The economy has a lot to do with psychology, confidence, optimism and belief in our own ability. We, at Badger Meter Europa, are of course also affected by the current economic sit uation and have to face sales decreases in some areas. Our products and customer base is, however, so broad that I am confident, we will cope with the economic recession. I am convinced that high-quality products, combined with the performance capability of our company, will continue to be in demand. I am sure that we – as a company – will come out stronger from this recession phase. Cost reductions in all departments are of course necessary and it is management´s priority to analyze all cost factors and adjust wherever necessary. This can be painful for individual employees, but we have to consider the company as a whole. I am confident and optimistic about our company´s strength, our employees´ performance and our outstanding products. See for yourself at our booth at ACHEMA 2009 May 11-15 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. I am looking forward to seeing you. Sincerely yours, Horst Gras "We measure the resources of our world" is our slogan and vision. The measurement of water and the careful treatment of raw materials is a business that is still valid in the economic recession. We are resolved to continue on the path we have chosen to develop new products for the flow metering and control technology market. Badger Facts_engl.indd 3 29.04.2009 22:23:39 Uhr Badger Meter Product innovations for Achema 2009 May 11-15, 2009 Badger Meter Europa is participating at ACHEMA 2009 – the most important international exhibition on chemical engineering, environmental protection and biotechnology. The greener side of blue Fresh water. It sustains life, keeps us clean and provides fun and sport. We often take this abundance for granted, yet the amount of water is finite. As the word population steadily increases, so does the demand for water. Our products help to conserve water by measuring and managing consumption. Badger Meter products help people to conserve the world´s valuable resources and we practice sustainability in our own business. We call this "the greener side of blue". Badger Meter is on "the greener side of blue" in its own manufacturing processes. We use scrap materials and other recycled materials to make our products and minimize our company´s carbon footprint. 01 Badger Facts_engl.indd 1 29.04.2009 22:23:47 Uhr Badger Meter NE W New aseptic valve The series SCV-09 aseptic control valves are compact, modulating diaphragm style valves designed to meet the manufacturing standards established by the 3A symbol council. This was a particularly challenging application where supercritical ethylene is dispensed to 24 parallel miniature batch reactors. Ethylene is known to exhibit a strong JouleThomson effect upon expansion. Additional ly, the rheological properties vary significantly as a result of even minor process variations (T&P) at the pressure points for polyethylene synthesis. Company ILS-Integrated Lab Solutions in Berlin, Germany – an independent engineering and plant construction office specializing in the design and construction of fully-automated, customized reaction systems in the chem ical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry – used a high-temperature Badger valve in this application. The ethylene feed is pre-heated using electrical heat-tracing as is the valve seat itself. "The Badger valve implemented provides excellent pressure control of the 24-parallel polyethylene synthesis and the seals have shown no swell ing from the supercritical ethylene employed," says ILS Managing Director Dr. Nagy. 05 Badger Facts_engl.indd 5 29.04.2009 22:24:13 Uhr Badger Meter Backpressure control in a continuous flow, fixedbed reactor operating with supercritical CO2 Supercritical CO2 represents a flexible oxidation medium and solvent, which may be used instead of comparatively toxic solvents. The high diffusivity of supercritical CO2 results in excellent diffusion in microporous reaction systems and can potentially reduce or eliminate coke formation often associated with hydrocarbon processing over solid-acid catalysts. ILS-Integrated Lab Solutions in Berlin, Germany implemented a high-temperature Badger valve for this application. Supercritical CO2 exhibits a strong JouleThomson effect upon expansion. This can severely affect valve control resulting in phase changes in the valve seat and in extreme cases can result in valve freezing. A Badger valve was implemented for this application and is heated using an electrical heating tape. "The valve has proven to be extremely robust, allowing our client to perform a variety of supercritical oxidation tests over a wide range of flows at pressure drops of up to 200 bars," says ILS Managing Director Dr. Nagy. 06 Badger Facts_engl.indd 6 29.04.2009 22:24:15 Uhr Badger Meter MAG meter prototype M2000 The new amplifier type M2000 is best suited for bi-directional flow measurement of fluids with a conductivity of > 5 μS / cm (> 20 μS / cm for demineralized water). M2000 shows a high accuracy, is easy to use and can be chosen for a large and flexible application spectrum. The backlit, fourline display shows all actual flow measur ing data, daily and complete information, including alarm messages. The standard amplifier has 4 programmable digital outputs, one digital input, power output and USB interface. Integrated test tools make putting it into operation and servicing it easier. The prototype will be presented at the Achema show. M2000 is expected to be on the market in autumn 2009.
