Environmental protection
as company philosophy
Badger Meter is aware of its responsibility to
the environment. We manufacture flow meters
to manage the precious resources of our world,
but we go beyond our products. Minimizing
pollution is a priority at all our facilities – from
product development to production to disposal
of waste. Our goal is to incorporate ecology into
all sectors of the company. Our concern for the
environment also extends to our employees and
their families, who also try to practice environmental conservation both at work and at home.

Dear Customers
and Employees,
Dr. Ing. Horst Gras
VP - International Operations Financial crisis, recession, part-time work
– these are the keywords which we have
been hearing daily in the past months.
Economic institutes, financial analysts
and other experts surpass themselves
almost daily with new negative forecasts.
I don’t think this is helpful in the present
economic crisis. The economy has a lot to
do with psychology, confidence, optimism
and belief in our own ability.
We, at Badger Meter Europa, are of course
also affected by the current economic sit
uation and have to face sales decreases
in some areas. Our products and customer
base is, however, so broad that I am confident, we will cope with the economic recession. I am convinced that high-quality
products, combined with the performance
capability of our company, will continue to
be in demand.
I am sure that we – as a company – will
come out stronger from this recession
phase. Cost reductions in all departments
are of course necessary and it is
management´s priority to analyze all cost
factors and adjust wherever necessary.
This can be painful for individual employees, but we have to consider the company
as a whole. I am confident and optimistic
about our company´s strength, our employees´ performance and our outstanding
products.
See for yourself at our booth at ACHEMA
2009 May 11-15 in Frankfurt am Main,
Germany.
I am looking forward to seeing you.
Sincerely yours,
Horst Gras
"We measure the resources of our world"
is our slogan and vision. The measurement
of water and the careful treatment of raw
materials is a business that is still valid in
the economic recession.
We are resolved to continue on the path
we have chosen to develop new products
for the flow metering and control technology market.

atmosphere. Come and visit us!
The greener side of blue
Fresh water. It sustains life, keeps us clean
and provides fun and sport. We often take
this abundance for granted, yet the amount
of water is finite. As the word population
steadily increases, so does the demand for
water.
Our products help to conserve water by
measuring and managing consumption.
Badger Meter products help people to
conserve the world´s valuable resources
and we practice sustainability in our own
business. We call this "the greener side of
blue".
Badger Meter is on "the greener side of
blue" in its own manufacturing processes.
We use scrap materials and other recycled
materials to make our products and minimize our company´s carbon footprint.

The new PortaSonic 7000 is now available.
The PortaSonic 7000 series are portable
ultrasonic flow meters designed for accurate
and reliable non-intrusive flow measurement of influent and effluent process water
and other liquids. These flow meters utilize
the ultrasonic transit-time principle.
The new model is approx. 30 % lighter than
the former model and ensures 12 hours of
continuous operation. The flow meter’s internal battery can be totally recharged in
three hours. The PortaSonic 7000 has an
accuracy rating of +/- 1.0 % of reading and
contains 256 MB of memory using a standard SD memory card (expandable to 8 GB).
The flow meter’s front panel contains a color
LC display and the flow meter comes equipped with a USB connector for streaming
flow data and set up parameters to a host
computer. The USB interface software is
included with the purchase. The flow meter
is housed in a rugged enclosure and has
an IP64 environmental rating. An optional

Flow measurement and flow profile calculation using
MultySonic 8000
MultySonic 8000 is an ultrasonic flowmeter that can acquire, apart from the flow, the
flow profile as well as the mean medium temperature and changes in the medium composition.
MultySonic 8000 measures everywhere
in filled pipes, partially filled pipes, open
channels, rivers and streams.
MultySonic 8000 is ideally suited for applications in wastewater plants, open-channel drainage basins and condensate return
lines. The flow meter is rated for explosion-proof applications and is maintenance
free. The installation requires no culverts
or flumes. The meter is highly accurate and
is capable of measuring backflow.
It continuously monitors itself with onboard diagnostics and ensures redundancy
utilizing a multichannel concept.
The MultySonic 8000 transducer is capable
of measuring up to eight end points. Flow
calculations are realized independently of
fluid viscosity. The flow meter is capable
of measuring electrically non-conductive
fluids and has virtually no pressure loss.
The installation is quick and easy and can
be done without interrupting the flow.
New oval gear meter series LM
Badger Meter designed a new generation of electronic oval gear meters in the LM OG
series.
The new models are equipped with a
completely new circuit board and their
appeal lies not only in better functional
ity, but also in a larger and more legible
display.
High pressure rate (100 bars) and clear
cost reductions were given special attention in the construction of the measur
ing chamber. The new generation of the
LM OG series is a high-quality product
with very high accuracy and lower man
ufacturing costs.
The new generation is setting new standards in functionality, accuracy and price.
With this product, we are able to offer
you high quality at an attractive, competitive price. The complete production of
the series is done in Germany.

Dispensing supercritical Ethylene in a parallel Polyethylene synthesis reactor
Polyethylene is often synthesized in slurry-phase reactors under supercritical conditions. This was a particularly challenging application where supercritical ethylene is
dispensed to 24 parallel miniature batch reactors.
Ethylene is known to exhibit a strong JouleThomson effect upon expansion. Additional
ly, the rheological properties vary significantly as a result of even minor process
variations (T&P) at the pressure points for
polyethylene synthesis. Company ILS-Integrated Lab Solutions in Berlin, Germany
– an independent engineering and plant
construction office specializing in the design and construction of fully-automated,
customized reaction systems in the chem
ical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical
industry – used a high-temperature Badger
valve in this application. The ethylene feed
is pre-heated using electrical heat-tracing
as is the valve seat itself. "The Badger valve
implemented provides excellent pressure
control of the 24-parallel polyethylene synthesis and the seals have shown no swell
ing from the supercritical ethylene employed," says ILS Managing Director Dr. Nagy.

Backpressure control in a continuous flow, fixedbed reactor operating with supercritical CO2
Supercritical CO2 represents a flexible oxidation medium and solvent, which may be
used instead of comparatively toxic solvents.
The high diffusivity of supercritical CO2
results in excellent diffusion in microporous reaction systems and can potentially
reduce or eliminate coke formation often
associated with hydrocarbon processing
over solid-acid catalysts.
ILS-Integrated Lab Solutions in Berlin,
Germany implemented a high-temperature Badger valve for this application.
Supercritical CO2 exhibits a strong JouleThomson effect upon expansion. This can
severely affect valve control resulting in
phase changes in the valve seat and in
extreme cases can result in valve freezing. A Badger valve was implemented
for this application and is heated using
an electrical heating tape. "The valve has
proven to be extremely robust, allowing
our client to perform a variety of supercritical oxidation tests over a wide range
of flows at pressure drops of up to 200
bars," says ILS Managing Director Dr.
Nagy.
