Ms. Rice, Mrs. Pescador, Mrs. Morales, Ms. Norton and Ms. Bell make up this team and they are visiting families whose students have missed 3 or more days of school. These visits are not to punish but to inform. We want our families to know the importance of attending school on a regular basis. Illness cannot be avoided and family emergencies do come up and it’s for that reason that students should not miss for any other reason. Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break. It’s time to break that cycle. This holiday season, the best gift you can give your child is a good education; and the best place to get that education is in school – every day and on time. Building a habit of good attendance is your child’s ticket to success in school and eventually on the job. We know it’s tempting to extend your vacation by a few days on either side of the holiday. We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with families far away and exposing your children to your home and language, whether you grew up in another part of the United States or a different country. The costs of plane tickets often influence when you want to travel but keep in mind the costs to your children’s education if they miss too much school: • • • Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school From Kindergarten to High School. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning; but it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when students are absent. If missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. So give your child the gift of attendance and the habit of your child being in school every day and on time. STUDENT LEADERSHIP CORNER PLAYWORKS! This October, 15 fourth and fifth grade students at Vaughn were chosen by Coach Rachel to be a part of the Playworks Junior Coach Leadership Program. These students were chosen out of almost 50 applicants because of the leadership qualities that they demonstrated in the classroom and at recess. During the 2015-2016 school year, these Junior Coaches will attend trainings to learn new ways to use their leadership skills and will lead games at their recesses and other grades’ recesses in order to practice these skills.
