Introduction
Stimulating the growth of legitimate international trade
Over the past years the WCO has been
working closely with an increasing number of
Security Solution Providers to build our IPM
platform, today the world’s only global product
verification web and mobile application aimed
at supporting Customs agents in their day-today work in the fight against counterfeiting and
illicit trade.
Security Solution Providers are an essential
dimension to our redesigned IPM platform
launched in September 2015 as we continue
to expand our offer so as to allow Customs
officials to verify the legitimacy of a product
online. The process of product identification
and verification today also generates valuable
analytical information for both the right holders
whose products can be verified through
the IPM platform and Customs authorities
worldwide.
While we continue to regularly add new Security
Solution Providers to our platform we are taking
the initiative with this first report to feature some
of our current Security Solution Providers with
a range of their technologies. Our intention is
to publish an updated version of this report
twice a year and incorporate in our next edition
highlights on the results achieved by these
technologies in the fight against illicit trade.
We hope that this report and its future iterations
will help our Customs authorities around the
world as well as the private sector better
understand the wide variety of technologies
available today to protect products against
counterfeiting and illicit trade.

The World
Customs
Organization (WCO)
The WCO is an intergovernmental
organization comprised of 180 Customs
administrations that provides leadership,
guidance and support to its Members
to secure and facilitate legitimate trade,
realize revenues, protect society and
build capacity.
As Customs administration members
are responsible for protecting national
borders from the illegal flow of
counterfeit and pirated goods, the WCO
leads discussions on global efforts to
fight such crimes. This entails bolstering
efforts to combat counterfeiting and
piracy by improving enforcement
methods and promoting the exchange
of information between Customs as well
as between Customs, other enforcement
agencies and the private sector.

Digital Solutions for Product Authentication
Founded in 2001, AlpVision is the world’s leader in digital
invisible technologies for product authentication and
counterfeit protection. Simple and industry proven,

A standard smartphone equipped with AlpVision’s custom product

the iPhone 4S/5/5S/5S/5C/6Plus/6S/6SPlus and Samsung Galaxy S4+S5;

Fingerprint™
Solutions
Cryptoglyph®
In 2001, AlpVision invented a
breakthrough authentication technology
called Cryptoglyph®. Widely used
today by Forbes 2000 companies,
AlpVision Cryptoglyph is a digital image
file that contains encrypted information.
Integrated with prepress, the
Cryptoglyph embeds a pseudo-random
pattern of invisible microdots (10-20
microns) in the imperfections of the
printed material using regular visible ink
and standard printing processes (offset,
rotogravure, flexo, laser, inkjet, etc.).
When applying overprint varnish, the
Cryptoglyph adds a pseudo-random
pattern of invisible micro-holes (40-80
microns) to the coating. Non-intrusive
and totally invisible, these microdots
or holes cover the entire surface of the
packaging or label without changing
its design. AlpVision Cryptoglyph can
be detected using a standard office
scanner or smartphone. This solution
applies to a wide variety of products,
including cartons, leaflets, labels, blister
packs, and high-value documents, to
name a few.
AlpVision
Successfully deployed at industry
level in 2009, Fingerprint™ is a
unique and breakthrough covert
anti-counterfeit solution that tracks
and authenticates mass produced
objects manufactured by processes
such as molding, stamping, rolling,
and tooling. With no changes to the
standard molding practices, AlpVision
Fingerprint leverages the intrinsic
microscopic surface irregularities
naturally occurring in a mold and
uses these unique characteristics
as the means of authentication (as
opposed to adding safety features).
The process requires capturing a
digital image of the matte-finished
surface of a molded part and storing
it in a database. This image is then
used as a reference to perform
product authentication. It follows
that one image per mold is sufficient
to authenticate an entire line of
objects produced by the same mold
cavity. Like Cryptoglyph, AlpVision
Fingerprint does not require highly
specialized equipment to be detected,
rather a smartphone or standard
office scanner. This solution applies
to a wide variety of molded parts,
including bottles and caps, electrical
appliances, mechanical parts, imaging
supplies, and watches.

A patented new approach to protecting and identifying
product and document authenticity, based on unique
digital codes stored on an off-line secure server.
ChecktoCashup Ltd. was founded in 2012 and has been a
full member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Since late 2014 ChecktoCashup Ltd. has been a member of
AmCham Estonia. The company has worked closely with the
ICC Counterfeit Intelligence Bureau since March 2015. Close

PrioSpot® security label is inscribed on up to seven different visible and hidden
verification levels simultaneously. Some of these features are clearly visible,
other features are covert and can only be seen using a special reading device.

to one single article, each product is given a unique identity and can be
protected and verified reliably. Since only tesa scribos® is in possession of the
