TRAIN - Professionalization of Literacy and Basic Education - Basic Modules for Teacher
Training
DESCRIPTION:
Literacy, broadly conceived as the basic knowledge and skills needed by all is a
fundamental human right. In every society literacy is a necessary skill in itself and one of
the foundation of other life skills. Literacy is also a catalyst for participation in social,
cultural political an economic activities, and for learning throughout life. In the rapidly
changing world of today's knowledge society, with the progressive use to newer and
innovative technological means of communication, literacy requirements continue to
expand regularly. In order to survive in today's globalized world, it has become
necessary for all people to learn (new) literacies and develop the ability to locate,
evaluate and effective use information in multiple manners.
In Europe the development of literacy and basic education is very different; that applies
to the professional development of trainers as well. Professionalism within literacy and
basic skills is a difficult subject because teacher and trainer have to deal with adults who
are marginalised or disadvantaged. In addition to their reading and writing difficulties the
students do have learning problems. Therefore teacher and trainer have to improve their
knowledge about psychological and social aspects. It is necessary to develop innovative
methods of teaching and learning, including interactive technologies. Even if the
importance of training literacy and basic education practitioners and professionals is not
disputed there are enormous differences how to deal with it. In Belgium and the
Netherlands you can find job descriptions for the staff, and universities provide trainings
with final examinations and certificates; in Great Britain core curricula and standards
have been developed for students and there are efforts by the government to improve
teacher training in the field of literacy and basic education. In mostEuropean countries
there is a lack of teacher training qualification.

Project New Start
DESCRIPTION:
Through the development and provision of lifelong learning, this Project will address
issues of discrimination and social exclusion encountered by deaf and severely hearing
impaired adult refugees and asylum seekers, particularly those who, in their countries of
birth, have received little or no basic education. This is often compounded by the use of
fragments of spoken or signed languages to compensate for the lack of a mother
tongue.
Records of the partners demonstrate that between 10% and 60% of every group of deaf
or severely hearing impaired adult students are refugees or asylum seekers, with an
increasing number of multiply disabled refugees. Therefore this Project addresses a
major educational and social issue for the whole of the European Union.
Through the transnational partnership work of this Project, the outcomes will encourage
and enable active citizenship by these immigrants by creating learning environments
and materials relating to their individual learning needs and communication skills at the
time of entry into their host countries so that they can more readily and effectively
develop pro-active roles in their new societies.
Local working partnerships with other agencies - statutory and non-governmental - will
form a sustainable basis for implementation of the project outcomes.

Alpha to Omega - New pathways towards volunteering and life long learning for senior European
citizens
DESCRIPTION:
The project intends to introduce senior citizens in Europe to forms of life long learning
through methods of social participation, volunteer services and inter-generational
dialogue. ''Alpha-to-Omega'' aims to increase the acquisition of knowledge, proficiencies
and competence in later periods of life of adults.
The methods include the development of often passive talents and proficiencies based
on non-formally or in-formally acquired competences during the way of life of senior
citizens. The target group especially consists of senior migrants, elderly belonging to
social and ethnic minorities as well as senior citizens with a low level of official
education. The methods embrace inter-generational task-based learning where
members of the young generation and senior citizens have to work with social
challenges they both have in common. Content of teaching includes future oriented work
assignments in order to increase European identification of senior citizens within the
European Union.
During the project, senior citizens will learn that they have a huge potential of knowledge
and competence they can rely upon and which they may transfer towards the younger
generation. Senior citizens will undergo programmes of adult education based on their
special needs and requirements, including medical and age-related aspects of learning
and cognitive comprehension. ''Alpha-to-Omega'' intends to develop modules of adult
education for senior citizens with special needs in order to create new ways of access to
adult education in European Union member states for the elderly and to allow providers
of adult education to answer the special needs and requirements of the elderly with the
help of easy to use and reliable innovative methods.
The project will develop teaching modules and materials, including a documentation of
samples of best-practice and case studies of inter-generational workshops and learning
assignments.

Development of training programme, combining political know-how with
communicative/social skills
Direct target groups:
a) Adult educators
b) Senior citizens interested in taking an active role in public life as volunteers in seniors'
interest representations
c) Senior organisations, active for interest representation of seniors
Indirect target groups:
a) Decision-makers in senior policy
Main activities:
Analysis of training and support requirements, reviewing existing models and experience
Writing, testing, updating, disseminating and implementing an European educational

Bila-Learn-Innovative methods for bilingual language acquisition for adults learners in europe
DESCRIPTION:
Bila-Learn intends to develop and test innovative and target-group oriented materials for
synchronous language acquisition of two or more foreign languages for adult learners in
Europe. The project especially focuses on European Union citizens who grew up with
two or more language due a migrants' background or a place of residence in European
Union border areas.
Bila-Learn will directly involve learners into the project. Existing methods of language
acquisition will be adapted towards the special needs of bilingual adult learners.
Obstacles preventing interested learners from language acquisition will be reduced. BilaLearn will concentrate of processes of language acquisition of adults learners using
innovative technological developments such as mobile communication devices (mobile
phone, PDAs) as learning tools. Standard forms of class-room teaching situation will be
reduced and replaced by innovative methods of synchronous acquisition of language
competence.
The methods will take into account the educational background of adult learners.
Learners will both work in learning groups and individual process using innovative
methods of bilingual language acquisition. Partners and the promoter of Bila-Learn
identified a need for bilingual language acquisition during the European Year of
Languages (EYL). According to studies undertaken during the EYL, 40 % of all
European citizens have a bi- or multilingual background (source: Eurostat). This groups
comprises individuals who grew up or live in border regions (i.e. DE-FR, AT-IT, GR-BRRO etc.), migrants speaking the language of their host country as well as the language
of their country of origin, persons with bi-national parents and members of ethnic or
cultural minorities using their minority languages as well as the ''lingua franca'' of the
region of residence. So far, learning a foreign language in Europe meant to learn one
language at a time.

MaStER - Mastering Statistics and Empirical Results
DESCRIPTION:
The increasing impact of science, the growing complexity of society and of the systems
that people live in, the rising number of more highly educated people, etc. - various
aspects add to the development that information which concerns people in daily life is
presented in the media by means of (often sophisticated) statistical representation, and
refers directly to empirical results. This representation is quite often not correct, or a
correct use of data is misunderstood by its recipients. This can lead to faulty
conclusions, attitudes or emotional reactions.
MaStER develops a course, which qualifies citizens of modern society (especially in
their roles as patients of health care systems and as consumers) to correctly and
critically understand such information and, vice versa, it qualifies journalists to present
such information correctly. The course will be offered both in a blended version and as
e-learning.

INTERtool
DESCRIPTION:
European project work within the SOCRATES programme is subject to specific
conditions placing high professional demands on all project actors, especially with
regard to intercultural management and virtual team building skills. Ambitious goals and
heavily loaded work plans need to be implemented in an efficient and effective manner.
The project INTERtool aims at providing European project managers and teams in adult
education with the basic specific intercultural competences necessary for successful
transnational cooperation in the framework of European projects with a strong focus on
the virtual dimension.
To this end virtual and face-to-face learning and training tools will be developed,
produced, tested and disseminated that contribute to:
- reconciling different communication and working styles and values brought into
European projects
- facilitating an effective type of moderation to solve problems during the project process
taking into regard the emotional aspects of intercultural communication
- organizing intercultural communication in virtual environments
- facilitating, mostly by virtual means, an efficient and effective intercultural team building
process
- securing equality in the partnership caused by differences especially in the field of
language competences and cultural values
Main activities and outputs will be the development of a guidance publication, the
development, testing and dissemination of a virtual intercultural team tool (VITT) and the
development of a face-to- face-course to enhance the competences of project actors.

Mit Lernrehabilitation zur Teilhabe am lebenslagen Lernen, eine Aufbaumethodik für behinderte
Ausländer
DESCRIPTION:
It is still not possible for many disabled people, particularly national minorities or
disabled people of foreign origin, to participate actively in adult education and in the life
of society. The usual difficulties that are exacerbated by the disability prevent them from
accessing educational provision which fosters self-development. The existing practice to
promote the integration of foreigners fails to take account of disabled foreigners.
Our overriding objective is to promote equal participation in the process of lifelong
learning and personal development.
The project’s principal outcome is a structured methodology for learning rehabilitation. In
drawing up this methodology, the partner organisations are guided by the statistical
surveys on the structure of the target group and by the best practice of and results
achieved by relevant EU projects. The qualification requirements for teachers are being
drawn up so that the methodology can be applied. A barrier-free (disabled-friendly)
website is being set up for dissemination purposes; it will function as a contact point for
the target group and as a milieu for discussion for the partner organisations. An
international conference will be held to provide information for decision-makers and to
exert an influence on their decisions.
The direct target group consists of adult representatives of national minorities or foreign
migrants whose access to participation in the process of lifelong learning and the active
life of society is hindered due to a disability or special needs. The indirect users are
teachers, training agencies and ultimately society, which first and foremost gains the
benefit of members who have been made ‘fit’ for lifelong learning and active integration
by learning rehabilitation, and are more capable of learning and motivated to learn.

EAGLE - EUROPEAN APPROACHES TO INTER-GENERATIONAL LIFELONG LEARNING
DESCRIPTION:
The proposed project `European Approaches to Inter-Generational Lifelong Learning'
(EAGLE) builds on the notion of manifold existing segmentations in individual human
lives and in society at large and in learning across age groups and generations,
especially in the light of an increasingly aging population, of substantial demographic
changes caused hereby and of the constant need for re-qualification and re-generation
within the concept of Lifelong Learning (LLL). EAGLE therefore plans to concentrate on
the field of inter-generational as well as later life learning processes within the
frameworks of formal and - of specific importance here - non-formal, informal and
autonomous learning. In a systematic and synthetic approach EAGLE wants to generate
an inventory allowing desk and filed research based in-depth insight into
(a) the potential as well as the limitations of trans-, inter-generational and later life formal
and informal learning;
(b) the policies, concepts, analyses, frameworks, experiences in place and empirical
evidence available and
(c) the models of good practice developed; those good practice cases in order to
generate policy and practice recommendations.
This will lead to the following core activities of EAGLE:
(d) to the formulation, selection and implementation of European action research based
segmental pilot experimentations;
(e) the pilot experimentations throughout Europe will undergo state-of-the-art verification
and validation stages. Based on this desk, field and action research based analysis and
piloting activities EAGLE aims finally
(f) at setting up a professional segmental dialogue including researchers, developers,
implementation practitioners, age group representatives, policy consultants and policy
makers to support exchange of ideas and experiences across existing fragmentations
and therefore to contribute and to encourage new, innovative and alternative learning
pathways of (adult) education.

SeniorLearning: Adapting e-learning techniques for integrating senior citizens in the new digital
world
DESCRIPTION:
Recent European Union studies show that for people from age 50up, about 30% are
computer users with professional or advanced skills or use computers frequently. About
10% represent the ''old age beginners'', using computers less often and possessing
fewer skills.
This latter group is heavily at risk of being left behind in accessing ICT-based and digital
services, and will thus constitute the target group of this project. In particular, older
people from disadvantaged social groups are in danger of being totally excluded from
the modern information society.
In light of the above need, coupled with Europe's rapidly ageing population, it is
envisaged that a web-based learning system especially adapted for senior citizens (50
years and above) will be of particular interest for society. The objectives of Senior
Learning can be outlined as followings:
- Approach senior citizens to ICTs, training them to readily use computers
- Train senior citizens on the practical use of internet, bringing them into the Information
Society.
- Study and apply pedagogical and technical methodologies and approaches tailored to
the needs of senior citizens in e-learning.
- Study, apply and adapt e-learning courses to the particularities of each different
country (different languages, web resources, levels of computer literacy, etc.).

The memory line: an intergenerational course of learning and communication
DESCRIPTION:
General aims
The project sets out to train groups of elderly and young citizens resident in the project
partner countries in the collection of testimonies (stories, songs, poetry etc.) with an aim
to ensure their conservation and diffusion with a view to creating a model of
intergenerational cooperation and learning in European regions. The material gathered
will allow university researchers on the one hand to study more deeply the themes of
intergenerational communication and memory, and on the other hand create a European
centre of intergenerational communication dedicated to testimonies, stories, memories
of elderly people in Europe and the study of and research into communication in this
specific environment.
Specific aims
1. Involve groups of adults/elderly persons (from age 50 up) and groups of young people
in order to have them become the protagonists of a complex creative training process
while at the same time dealing with the theme of intergenerational communication by
means of the collection of testimonies.
2. Create intergenerational workshops to develop and test a training process which will
develop knowledge and skills in the use of instruments of communication and
expression with the aim of achieving the formulation of creative messages to be shared
and which will lead to the creation of animated shows with the puppets
3. Gather, analyse and select interviews and materials collected by various partner
countries (memories, stories, poems, etc.) and organise them into an electronic archive
to be accessed via Internet
4. Produce in-depth studies of themes dealing with intergenerational communication and
memory at the European level
5. Produce a European centre of intergenerational communication
6. Produce a dedicated website
7. Organise a campaign for the promulgation of results/products through animation
shows with the puppet in the various partner countries

Promotion of social and personal skills in socially unpriviliged persons as basic condition for
lifelong learning
DESCRIPTION:
Adult education is confronted by the fact that its' training offer are predominately used by
people that already have a certain level of education. Especially socially unprivileged
persons are rarely represented. Studies show that these people often lack in basic
competences like social and personal skills. Social and personal skills are key
competences and important pre-conditions for the access and successful
accomplishment of any kind of formal and informal education. Unfortunately they are
rarely part of curricula and educational offers.
The project on hand will fill this gap. A training concept will be developed to support
social and personal skills in adults as a basic condition for self-regulated lifelong
learning. The ultimate target group will be socially unprivileged people. In a first step, the
project focuses on a selection of subgroups. The elaborated training concept will be
disseminated by a train-the-trainer course on European level and by publishing the
training concept in a brochure and in internet in nine languages. A European conference
and a small brochure will be realised in order to sensitize politicians and decision
makers. Thus the project will head for long-term effects by the implementation of social
and personal skills into curricula.

Civil Society Against Right-Wing Extremism - developing new life-long learning strategies for
NGOs
DESCRIPTION:
The present project is the result of a deep analysis on the current trends of European
civil society active in the fight against right-winged extremism, racism and discrimination,
an analysis emerged from many years' experience in antidiscrimination campaigns and
field work within the UNITED network. Europe is nowadays experiencing an alarming
spread of racism. Racist violence is already deeply rooted within marginalized sectors of
society, which often resort to clash, scapegoat and violence in reaction to their
precarious status. Sadly, young people are also very much involved in racist trends.
Teenagers and adults living precarious situations are easy targets for right-wing
extremists' propaganda and recruitment.
Although European institutions show active commitment in raising awareness and
combating discrimination, it is still extremely hard to reach societal sectors outside
formal education. The experience of UNITED shows that despite the quantitative and
qualitative work done by many organizations active in the field (national campaigns,
activities held during the international week against racism, local projects), many other
NGO's have little knowledge about democratic institutions and processes. The urgency
felt within the antiracist movement for a more qualified training of NGOs activists is a
request coming from the involved countries for many years now. As a matter of fact,
UNITED has, through its network of more than 560 NGOs all over Europe, mapped out
the European situation and considers it to be extremely serious. Nevertheless, there are
effective ways to tackle discrimination at its local and regional level through innovative
and informal learning strategies. The network experience shows that some NGOs
across Europe have good practice of life-long learning within the antiracist field, and
they are willing to share them. The present project has the aim of giving the best
practices a European dimension.

European Generation Llnk - Promote European Citizenship through Intergenerational and Intercultural
Learning
DESCRIPTION:
Promoting the ''EU citizen'' is one of the main objectives of EU policy, but prejudices and
narrow-minded attitudes still linger on. The treasure of older people who have
experienced a multilingual and multicultural life will be ''unearthed'' and this knowledge is
transferred to younger generations before it literally ''dies out''.
The project ''EU Generation Link'' aims at
-Promoting intergenerational learning where older people tell their stories of having lived
in various EU countries, young people will document them in an interactive library and
simultaneously teach them basic IT skills.
-Promoting understanding of historical backgrounds and providing reflection in order to
increase tolerance and to reduce prejudices and xenophobia
The main products will be
-Platform ''EU Generation Link'': Interactive Internet-based Library' contains documents
that can be searched under various parameters
-The ''EU Generation Link Guidelines'' inform about organisational and didactical aspects
of the platform
-Deployment plan for a sustainable implementation of the project
-Multiplier Symposium for experts from EU countries that do not participate at the project.
The partnership comprises 15 operative and 3 strategic partners from 16 countries.

ADD-LIFE! - ADDing quality to LIFE through inter-generational learning via universities
DESCRIPTION:
Not only the economy and the labour market but also our European civil society cannot
afford to lose the skills, competences and experiences of older people. The overall aim
of the project ADD-LIFE! is to develop university-accredited modules for non-traditional
students, especially senior citizens. The curricula specify scientific learning as well as
instruction for training promoters in the specific topic taught.
The objectives are to:
- explore different models of inter-generational learning, collaborative learning between
older and younger learners, and inter-generational collaboration on designing new
modules;
- develop learning opportunities that will promote participation of individuals in European
civil society as promoters and facilitators/mentors with others;
- design 12 modules of learning using these different models and different flexible
approaches, and pilot 6 of these;
- evaluate the pilots systematically and report on the lessons learned from intergenerational teaching and learning, and from collaborative design; and evaluate
systematically and report on the lessons learned about universities' potential role in
training promoters for different fields of voluntary and paid work, identifying the need for
further development, including concrete recommendations;
- disseminate and valorise the outputs and products of the project among the
professional communities in European universities and beyond.

Love Language!Attract Participation and Increase Motivation of Young Male Language Learners
DESCRIPTION:
The overall objective of the project is to enable young male adults with particular ''foreign
language learning resistance'' to establish their ''love for language'' by raising their
interest and uptake of foreign languages and to increase their participation in the life long
learning society. The project will :
- develop a Handbook for foreign language training methodology and concepts by
employing learning contents that reflect the personal preferences and interests of the
target group (stereotypical male interests like football, cars and music) in order to attract
participation and increase their motivation.
- develop a Tool Box containing methods for the following target groups: Educational
drop-outs, long-term unemployed young male adults, socially marginalised persons
- include aspects of diversity, especially of the cultural and social background of the
learners in order to overcome sectoral divides and other cultural differences.
The multi-actor partnership comprises 18 partners (development partners, regional
organisations and social partners). The elaboration of a deployment plan that contains
commitments of the partners for further sustainability will provide an excellent basis for a
realistic and sustainable implementation and utilisation of the project's results. A Multiplier
Seminar will disseminate the results also to European countries that do not participate in
the project.

E-DysGate - Stärke Deine Sinne! -Trainingsprogramm für junge legasthene Erwachsene
DESCRIPTION:
Legasthenia (or dyslexia) is a lifelong genetic disposition. In order to provide coaching
for young dyslexic adults, those affected and those coaching them currently usually
have to fall back on materials for children. Young dyslexic adults are so demotivated by
having to do exercises using ‘childish’ material that they completely refuse to have
coaching to help with their dyslexia and prefer to put up with their performance
shortcomings in education and employment. However, young adults in particular can
achieve sustained improvements if they have suitable training documents. Research
results show that strengthening and stimulating sensory perceptions is a prerequisite for
developing more complex key skills, and is of great importance for coping with
employment and everyday life. A motivating and interactive learning environment for
training the sensory perceptions of young dyslexic adults is developed within the
framework of the project. The exercises are based on strong visualisation, i.e. little
language is used. The training materials can be retrieved from the project portal at any
time and in any location and are thus easily accessible. Coaches can improve the
quality of the training they provide by putting the exercises to use in their individual
training provision.

Europe at Work.
DESCRIPTION:
The project Europe at Work aims at the improvement of European citizenship and
awareness at European people. For this purpose the project focuses on a workplace
based learning approach bringing the topic of European citizenship right into the
companies to workers and management staff. For this objective the project develops a
number of pre-releasing instruments for raising the basic awareness towards different
cultures and Europe as such. This will be followed by a training programme for
managers and multipliers in companies about European citizenship as well by an elearning programme for workers on learning stations in the companies.
The developed instruments for workplace based learning in European citizenship will be
tested with the target group in three companies (workers and managing staff) in three
countries in AT, DK and ES.
For reaching the project aims and objectives on pedagogical and content level the
project counts on a comprehensive partnership of educational institutions, regional
development institutions, trade union bodies, chambers of commerce and education
associations.
A comprehensive valorisation and dissemination strategy and plan supports the
implementation and impact of the developed approaches in an effective way.

TEPA - visegrad-slovenian-swedish initiative in training for european partnership animators
DESCRIPTION:
In the new European Union member states there is an urgent need for local animators'
people playing key role in the creation of local partnerships, mobilizing communities to
find solutions for local problems and allowing them to benefit from European funds. The
role of local animator is highly complex and requires a variety of social skills. Due to the
shortage of trainers, the learning opportunities in the new member states are very
limited.
Our project aims to develop a curriculum for trainers of local animators in five new
European Union Members: Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovenia.
Training materials will be based on development theories and the best practices of the
participating countries. We plan to produce printed manuals (in English and in five
national languages) and a didactic DVD. Two pilot courses for 25 participants each (5
from each country) will also be carried out to test contents and methodology.
The involvement and close cooperation of the national rural development networks of
the five participating countries (plus the Swedish network as external evaluator) ensures
the viability of the project. Through the PREPARE network, results will be disseminated
to the rest of the Central and Eastern European countries.

DESCRIPTION:
The project Game On aims :
-to create highly engaging and motivating e-learning materials and e-games in small,
accessible units, to improve personal development and work sustainability skills in
prisoners and ex-offenders, including additionally marginalised groups of prisoners, i.e.
deaf prisoners and those who are learning disabled.
-to ensure that at all stages the target audience is engaged in the design,
implementation and evaluation of the materials.
-to continuously evaluate the effectiveness, engagement and usability of the materials at
all production stages, incorporating the results into ongoing design and development.
Our outputs will comprise of a suite of materials with fifteen minute learning objects (LO)
that offer learning outcomes concerning personal development and work sustainability
skills. The personal development module will support learning in the field of social and
emotional intelligence that will develop the employability of the beneficiaries (e.g.,
managing aggression, responses to problems and stress, self esteem, trust, etc). The
work sustainability module will support the expectations and code of conduct of
employers, the legal and safety issues of employment etc. There will also be Basic Skills
modules.
These materials will be designed and developed by all partners to take full account of
cultural and language considerations and including best practice from across Europe.

LifeLearn
DESCRIPTION:
LifeLearn aims to capture the potential of the community and home environments as rich
sites and sources of learning.
By systematising informal learning to be compatible with the formal learning frameworks
of tertiary education, Lifeplace Learning (LPL) will provide enhanced opportunities for
adult learners to recognise knowledge gained in a wide variety of professional, leisure
and community contexts.
LifeLearn will build on the established practices of Work Based Learning (WBL) where
learners negotiate learning outcomes derived from their work role, complemented by
directed learning and/or research, so that the outcomes are placed in a recognisably
academic context. LifeLearn will extend these procedures to implement, assess and
quality assure learning that occurs from a person's wider life role. Existing WBL/LPL
practice will be reviewed to develop guidance material for practitioners and learners.
Partners will develop LPL approaches (modules, programmes and courses) in their own
institutions, enrol adult learners and work collaboratively to evaluate the impact on the
adult learner experience, the tutor experience and the sustainability aspects of the
concept. These will be documented and disseminated as case studies.
The roles of ICT and other media based resources will also be evaluated as will the
student support mechanisms such as mentoring, facilitation and coaching. LifeLearn's
dissemination role will promote the status and recognition of LPL across Europe.

Parenting in a Multicultural European City
DESCRIPTION:
Successful parenting requires policy environments that enable all parents, regardless of
social class, income, race or creed, to provide for health, social, cultural and educational
needs of children. Existing support systems may need changing to reflect the needs of
disadvantaged indigenous and immigrant parents.
This project focuses on adult education for socially excluded and marginalized
indigenous citizens, integrated with refugees, asylum seekers, migrant workers and
Roma families.
The project will explore ''Parenting in Modern Europe'', as a learning theme of common
interest across cultures, identifying ways of involving disadvantaged less educationally
oriented target groups, promoting social inclusion.
Parents new to a city need information about support systems available to them. The
project will give Parents' Groups an opportunity to survey existing policy and provision
and prepare City and European Guides for parents and new immigrant families. Equality
awareness, especially the fight against racism and xenophobia, are addressed by this
project as the process will develop intercultural awareness and support integration.
Parents' Groups from ten European cities will work transnationally to compare findings,
identify themes of common interest and provide feedback about policy and system
changes which will be both culturally sensitive and adapted to needs of immigrant and
marginalised parents.

THE WILL TO DREAM: PROMOTING DRAMA & VIDEO IN PRISON EDUCATION
DESCRIPTION:
Increasingly theatre and video have become an important aspect in helping prisoners
and ex-offenders gain confidence, realise their potential, avoid recidivism and even find
new careers. Arts groups such as the London Shakespeare Workout in London, the
Prison Arts Foundation in Belfast, and the Galli-Group in Vienna and Berlin, alongside
formal institutions like Mountjoy Prison in Dublin and City College Manchester, have for
many years been actively involved in this process. From this background `The Will to
Dream' emerged, focusing on the practical use of theatre and video in adult prison
education, particularly in countries in eastern and central Europe with limited experience
of these areas. The project concentrates on developing strategies, approaches and
learning material to encourage and promote theatre and video in adult prison education,
including the involvement of professional practitioners.
It aims to:
- create & pilot a multilingual, multimedia learning package;
- organise transnational meetings & practical workshops;
- develop strategies for centres with limited experience;
- utilise the rich theatrical traditions of European theatre & film;
- explore the use of theatre and video in personal and group reactions and relationships
;
- combat racism, xenophobia and other negative attitudes towards fellow human beings.

DESCRIPTION:
The project addresses unemployment and training problems of disadvantaged people by
developing appropriate adult education and career orientation and counselling services
and instruments. Moreover, these services will be provided locally by trained staff and in
appropriate endowed locations situated in the target communities.
The project aims to:
- develop appropriate skills and knowledge of disadvantaged people through training
and counselling in career guidance
- increase socialising skills and community participation of disadvantaged people
- disseminate practices and methodologies on life long learning regarding social
integration and career guidance of disadvantaged people
In general, the project addresses one major target group: disadvantaged people.
However, taking into account specific regional and national backgrounds of the countries
involved in the project, each partner will approach a specific target group. Therefore the
project builds on diversity and exchange of various adult education experiences.
The project's partnership will develop an analyse regarding specific training needs of
disadvantaged people, particularly related to work challenges, a training of trainers
program, professional and personal development training programs and two guides
aiming both the target group and the practitioners.

Strengthening Participative Democracy through Collaborative Learning
DESCRIPTION:
Rationale
This Grundtvig1.1 proposal is oriented towards the situation of the threat against
cohesion of societies caused by globalisation, modernity and individualisation. In the
light of this development tendencies of economical and cultural polarisation are
envisaged in European societies. Among people there seem to be a move in focus from
joint cooperation, solidarity and common values towards a more individualistic search for
interest and advantages.
Objectives
The proposal contributes to a redefinition and a reinforcement of local and regional
participative democracy which implies the aspects of being a citizen not only in the local,
regional and national democracies, but also in the European society.
Target groups
This proposal aims at opposing these tendencies by developing a training course for
practitioners engaged in activities of Participative Democracy.
Main activities:
1. research study on potentials and barriers for active involvement of citizens in the
participating countries
2. needs analyses for strengthening conditions of participative democracy and active
citizenship
3. pilot model for citizens active involvement with a special focus on inclusion of citizens
with a immigrant background
4. training course.
Expected outputs
The central output is the training course, comprising among other following topics:
- Taking part in democratic processes
- Facilitating activities and fundraising in relation to participative democracy
- Discussions in how to improve a European identity
- Organising creative processes to engage people in participative democracy.

USE ELP - USAGE OF ELP FOR TEACHERS IN ADULT EDUCATION.
DESCRIPTION:
The project USE ELP intends to raise the usage of the European Language Portfolio
(ELP) among foreign language teachers, and thereby enhancing the quality of teacher
training. The main objective is to develop a teacher training course on how to support
learners in using the ELP. The main target group of the project are foreign language
teacher educators that give training to foreign language teachers in adult education. It is
intended to design a training course USE ELP and to develop a manual in EN/DE, to
carry out one test training course and two Grundtvig 3 training courses and to publish
the course in the Grundtvig 3 catalogue. Articles and presentations at a conference will
explain the course-design and the manual to a wider public in language teacher
education. To assure the sustainability it is planned to establish a European network of
language trainer educators who will work collaboratively in promoting the training course
in their institutions and national networks.

TRANSITION - Ausbildung zum Übergangsbegleiter für frühkindliche Bildungsprozesse
DESCRIPTION:
Parents (particularly parents of children with special educational needs and/or families
from a migrant background) very often feel overtaxed by the transition processes that
their children go through at kindergarten and school. The project reacts to this situation
by developing a training course for instructors (disseminators) upon conclusion of which
they are able to support parents in dealing with transition processes. The course has the
following objectives:
- boosting the parents’ role in dealing with children’s transition processes in early
childhood;
- establishing a culture of meetings between families, kindergartens and schools;
- making transition processes easier, particularly for families of children with special
educational needs and/or families from a migrant background;
- providing training for instructors at European level, so that they can train transition
guides at national level.
Target groups:
- Those responsible for training educators, retired educational staff.

FMP - Fertility Management Program.
DESCRIPTION:
In the context of demographic developments in Europe comprehensive problems in
family planning and family formation and a rising awareness of one's own body and
fertility show a need to offer more specific information about fertility management and
give perspectives to people in their fertile years.
The Fertility Management Program focuses on the development of a training course for
adult educators to enable them to process offers on couple relationship, gender issues,
sexuality, fertility awareness, family planning and life concepts to specific target groups
who face multiple barriers to their empowerment (migrants, male population and people
living in rural areas). Further expected outputs are a workbook for adult educators and
specific material for the target groups.
The project intends to bring different national efforts together taking into account the
experiences of all partners.
The aims of the program are to increase the knowledge on and awareness of fertility
among different target groups, to enable and encourage couples to manage their fertility
autonomously, to sensitize for gender related aspects/problems of fertility management,
to enhance mutual decision on family planning and size, to maintain or/and improve
reproductive health, to promote lifelong learning, to develop a mutual multicultural/ethnic
European approach to fertility management.

WinAct- Winning immigrants as active members.
DESCRIPTION:
Populations of immigrant origin are growing in Europe. However, immigrants are
underrepresented in many fields of civic activities. Therefore, raising immigrants' civic
participation is a crucial issue for democracy in the European Union. The enhancing of
immigrants' participation is an important task for adult education.
The project WinAct aims at encouraging and enabling adult educational professionals to
conduct workshops with the aim of raising civic participation of immigrants in trade
unions and political parties. The course targets adult educational professionals all over
Europe who are interested in promoting immigrant participation. Many of them are
expected to be of immigrant origin.
Specifically, the transnational team from Germany, Ireland, Norway, Romania and
Portugal
- develops and tests five workshop modules (base, party-specific, trade-union specific,
Ireland and Norway)
- tests and offers Grundtvig Training courses to introduce the workshop modules to adult
educators and to encourage and enable them to adjust and complement the workshop
modules for their own countries
- runs a website in order to disseminate the project results and to encourage exchange
and participation beyond the participants and beyond the project duration.
Building on ongoing European Union-funded research, WinAct is innovative in
strengthening the links not only within adult education, but by making recent research
findings accessible without loss of time.

GESUNDHEITSCOACHING IN DER ERWACHSENENBILDUNG
DESCRIPTION:
In adult education, attention is directed primarily at the content of lessons and the
teaching skills of the trainers. Quality is defined in terms of variety of methods,
competent trainers, variety of content and the subsequent success of the participants.
The situation regarding health and maintenance aspects is very different. This relates,
for example, to the design of the premises, the scheduling and sensible structuring of
breaks, as well as the provision of healthy, balanced meals and snacks. In adult
education institutions in particular, this is an area where participants are left to their own
devices. It is therefore the objective of the project to draw up and test a course concept
which will enable trainers, managers and teachers to provide advice and instruction for
participants in this area and to initiate appropriate changes within educational
institutions. Materials such as a course framework, health check, curriculum (training to
become a health coach) and teaching materials will be created for the course concept
within the scope of the project. The course concept will be applied in a test phase, then
evaluated and subsequently offered to providers under Grundtvig 3. Through the further
training of trainers, managers and other teachers from further education institutions, we
expect
a) to expand the competence of the educational institutions;
b) to enhance the learning environment;
c) to improve the level of training success achieved in further education institutions;
d) to provide overall competitive advantages for further education institutions which
incorporate health factors into their work;
e) to raise participants’ awareness of health-conscious behaviour, which will also have a
positive impact on their home environment;
f) to provide greater opportunities for participants to find jobs in the labour market.

NAMAL2, Nouvelles Approches pour Motiver à la Formation tout au long de la vie
DESCRIPTION:
Lifelong learning is a key element for employment and is a need for all. It can be
observed all over Europe that the less qualified people are, the less training they
undergo.
This situation is often caused by bad memories of school, fear of examinations, and so
on. It is therefore difficult to motivate low-qualified people to enter training.
The NAMAL 1 project, implemented from April 2002 to November 2003 within the
GRUNDTVIG 1 programme, attempted to respond to this problem.
Forty monographs were produced within this project concerning experiences in
six EU countries. An analysis of these experiences made it possible to identify
15 motivation factors and an initial methodology for implementing them.
The NAMAL 2 project aims to use the experiences and analyses of the NAMAL 1 project
and expand them in the form of a course on ''how to motivate low-qualified or unqualified
groups to undergo lifelong learning''. This course will be aimed at trainers and opinionleaders and intermediaries working with low-qualified groups, and specific groups
(career advisers for employment agencies, trade union delegates, etc.).
The particular aim is to allow these professionals to establish their own method of
motivation, using the various influences they can bring to bear in order to make
experiences carried out elsewhere relevant to the groups with which they work, and to
the local context.

PAVE - PROMOTING AUDIO-VISUAL RESOURCES IN ADULT EDUCATION
DESCRIPTION:
This project is proposing the creation of an educational programme in the context of the
priorities identified in the European Union's ''2010 Education & Training Strategy''. As
identified in the mentioned ''Strategy'', one of the three main areas most in need of
action in education and training is making lifelong learning a concrete reality together
with another major priority being the integration of ICT, audiovisuals and multimedia
technologies in teaching and learning methods. Thus, the priority of this proposal is the
creation and implementation of a multimedia and audiovisual educational systems
programme in the area of adult education for a closer involvement of the learners.
Multimedia, through its varied and diverse mediums is a valuable method of educating
and training with an effectiveness that goes beyond the borders and the national
contexts, it is easily accessible to all and it undoubtedly opens up the educational
potential to the wider world. The educational programme being proposed will have a
two-pronged approach namely the training of adult education teachers and staff in the
professional use of audiovisual material in adult education and the utilisation of the
theme of Europe as a transversal subject for the course. The integration of ICT can play
a useful role in terms of developing innovative and effective pedagogies adapted to the
individual needs of learners, particularly adult and disadvantaged learners.
The main objectives of the project are:
- training of staff to utilise the potential of multimedia to overcome the barriers commonly
present in adult education and the education of disadvantaged adult learners.
- training the trainers into developing audiovisual outputs which will have the potential of
a multiplier effect and which are easily transferable to various themes, skills and
educational levels
- training how to develop audiovisual material for professional adult education

FACE IT! FAMILIES AND ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION - AN INTEGRATED TRAINING
DESCRIPTION:
FACE IT! adresses the need to provide communities with tools to train professionals in
how to effectively stimulate Active Citizenship (AC) within communities, the appropriate
approach in this case being non-formal and informal LLL reaching across generations.
Thus, FACE IT! aims at designing a training course with handbook for supporting Active
Citizenship through Family Learning (FL) to be used in a cascading effect by LLL / AC
educators: partnership internationally trains trainer trainers who then train national
trainers to work with disadvantaged families to become more actively involved within
their communities. The FACE IT !project calendar includes research into transferable
existing models, course design (including country specific materials, with a Blended
Learning format to allow maximum results), piloting and adjustments, 3 opportunities for
international training also offered as Grundtvig 3 courses and two intervals for
multiplication through national trainings and/or application with beneficiary families. The
FACE IT!-partnership composition will enable the transfer of models and expertise from
countries with tradition in AC /FL policies - e.g. UK, Ireland - towards countries where
such approaches are only now emerging and the need to professional skills and tools is
increasing rapidly - eg. Romania.

EFLN - European Family Learning Network
MAIN THEMATIC AREA: BASIC SKILLS
DESCRIPTION:
Family Learning (FL) provides a strong motivational tool to address language, literacy,
and numeracy needs of adults with low level skills through their wish to support their
children's development. Partners in the FL Falcon Grundtvig 4 project identified
significant new development work across Europe, but an absence of infrastructure for
sharing European good practice, exchanging expertise, resources or information. FL
practitioners are unnecessarily duplicating development work because they are working
in isolation.
The project will:
- Establish a European FL Network to create a mechanism for on-going exchange of
expertise, good practice, news, research and developments in the field of Family
Learning and facilitate discussion and shared understanding of concepts/terminology
around Family Learning Policy and Practice.
- Identify new priorities and raise the profile of Family Learning across Europe, by
consolidating informal networks, contributing to the basic skills debate, influencing policy
makers, disseminating and mainstreaming FL developments.

PAN European: European Network for organisations involved in adult prison arts education
MAIN THEMATIC AREA: EDUCTION IN PRISONS
DESCRIPTION:
This initiative arose through discussions between the European Prison Education
Association, an NGO of the Council of Europe focused on Prison Education, and the
Comenius Big Picture Network, exploring post-16 non-advanced arts education, during
which the need was identified for creating a specific European network focusing on
prison arts education. Issues of special concern related to the context, support,
strategies and practice of delivering arts education for adult offenders and ex-offenders
in a European context. City College Manchester, a further education college with a remit
to support prison education in the UK, agreed to coordinate the network. The following
aims were identified
- To form a European-wide prison arts network;
- To examine official policies and governmental support regarding prison art education,
particularly in encouraging social reinsertion;
- To identify current approaches for teaching prison arts education;
- To highlight examples of best teaching practice & support in-service training
programmes;
- To develop innovative methods and materials;
- To explore combining art forms in the delivery of prison arts education;
- To identify opportunities for inmates to gain qualifications;
- To identify vocational opportunities for ex-offenders;
- To organise international conferences and workshops;
- To publish & disseminate Network outcomes.

MOVE - Mutual Recognition of skills and competences gained through volunteering - towards a
European debate
DESCRIPTION:
The MOVE project will focus on mutual recognition of skills and competences learned
through volunteering amongst different stakeholders from the voluntary sector, business,
formal education and government as well as accreditation bodies. It will bring together a
variety of stakeholders with their tools and experiences in the field of identifying,
assessing and recognizing these skills. The main objective is to create a space for the
exchange of approaches, needs and knowledge between these actors. The core of
MOVE will be a three day conference in Brussels in May 2007 bringing together 60
experts and practitioners in the field and providing a space for the presentation of good
practices, the identification of barriers that hinder collaboration of the different
stakeholders and discussion on common standards. The participants will debate the
possibility to develop a ''European Volunteer Pass'', a portfolio of skills and
competences learned through volunteering that could contribute to the current work of
the European institutions on the recognition on non-formal learning and the European
Qualification Framework. The results and the experience of the seminar will lead to the
creation of a European Thematic Network that will take further the debate and work on
implementation of the results.
