won the Central Chennai Lok Sabha constituency, according
to the results announced on May 16.
He polled 3,36,996 votes and defeated the sitting MP
Dayanidhi Maran of DMK by 49,541 votes. Maran polled
2,87,455 votes. J. Constandine Ravindran of DMDK polled
1,14,798 votes.
Vijayakumar, who is practicing law in Madras High Court,
is Tamil Nadu State Secretary
of AIADMK’s student wing. He
is also honorary president of
Chintamani Cooperative
Society, Poonga Nagar.
T. G. Venkatesh Babu (a
resident of Purasawalkam),
another AIADMK candidate,
won the North Chennai
constituency. He polled
4,06,704 votes as against his
immediate rival R. Girirajan
(DMK) who polled 3,07,000
votes.
While AIADMK claimed a
massive victory, winning 37
constituencies out of 39
contested, the party’s nearest
rival DMK drew a blank in the
election.

As the counting of votes
began for the announcement
of results for the Lok Sabha
election at 8 a.m on May 16,
and the trend became clear by
noon, the headquarters of
leading parties gave contrasting looks.
With AIADMK sweeping
the polls in Tamilnadu, it was
a jubilant scene outside its
headquarters in Royappetah
where party men exchanged
sweets and pleasantries and
lit crackers. Senior leaders
hugged and shook hand with
their functionaries.
Even though BJP did not
win any seat in Tamilnadu,
its party workers were seen
celebrating with firecrackers
outside its headquarters on
Vaidyaraman Street (T.
Nagar) owing to the party’s
overwhelming performance in
the other states and with the
likelihood of their party
forming the next government
at the center.
The sight was dismal outside Anna Arivalayam (headquarters of the DMK). It wore
a deserted look as news of
party candidates trailing in
most constituencies in Tamilnadu started to trickle in.
Party men stood in huddle
and discussed the pros and
cons of their party’s campaign.
As the trend got even worse
by noon, even the few workers
who had gathered around left.
None of the senior leaders
were to be seen.
The police personnel deployed for protection near the
party offices were eagerly
watching the election results
on the television.

Beware of inflated electricity bills
Sir, I was quite surprised to receive a heavy bill
for domestic power consumed recently. I was
certain of some mistake in billing such a huge
amount of Rs. 2990 for 700 units of electricity
consumed in my house during the last two months.
So I checked it out for myself and to my shock
found out that my actual consumption was only
340 units. When I brought this to the notice of EB
authorities, they revised the bill amount to Rs.
970.
Even this time, I sensed something was wrong
and brought it again to their notice. Finally my
bill amount was corrected and reduced to Rs. 850
by the authorities.
This is poor service on the part of EB authorities. It also shows the lethargic manner in which
meter readings are taken. I urge all electricity
consumers to be aware and be cautious in paying
their bills and pay for only what they have

passed away on May 15.
He was 82 and had been a resident of Anna Nagar
for 28 years. He had retired from Central Leather
Research Institute, Chennai. He had also been a
leather expert with United Nations.
He is survived by his wife Mary Devassy and
Anna Nagar three daughters.

(Anna Nagar) and Sri Sushwani Matha Jain Vidyalaya (Pulianthope)
last week.
Subbalakshmi started her career as a headmistress in St. Paul School
(Bangalore) in 1978.
She was principal of Jai

Vidyalaya and Adarsh Group
of Schools (Anna Nagar) before
joining Agarwal Vidyalaya as
principal in 2000.
She was the recipient of the
Dr. Radhakrishnan Best
Teacher Award from the state
government in 2008.

a group skating marathon lasting a hundred
hours in the rink in Tower Park.
The event was organized by Anna Nagar
Roller Skating Club from May 1 to 5.
The 100 skaters put together covered a
Sai Abhishek record distance of 2616 km.
It got them entries into Tamilnadu Book of
Records, The Indian Book of Records and The Asian Book of
Records. K.T. Unnikrishnan (coach) said that such feats help
students set a target and work towards it. Also, it’s a moment
of fame. Children and parents too were excited about the relay
marathon, where students aged 5 to 18 performed day and

Visually impaired student aspires
to do doctorate in Tamil literature

Visually impaired R. Gunasekaran (resident of
4/583, East JJ Nagar, Mogappair) scored 1091
marks out of 1200 in the Std. 12 State Board
exam, the results of which were declared on May
9.
He was a student of St. Louis School for the Deaf
and the Blind (Adyar).
He said that he has a penchant for Tamil
literature and that he has applied for a Tamil PG
course in Loyola College which leads directly to MA degree.
He then aspires to do his M.Phil and Phd. and become a full-time
professor.

A vendor at Koyambedu Flower Market said that many party
workers who were confident of victory of their party’s candidates had
already placed orders for huge garlands made with combinations of
fragrant flowers.
The prices of the flowers have gone up by almost 50% in the last few
days, he said.
“We have been burning midnight oil to make the garlands and meet
the demand,” he added.

peaking at 38.6 degrees Celsius in Chennai. It then touched 40 degrees on Wednesday.

Anna Nagar, said, “It is
increasingly becoming difficult
to be on the road between 12.30
p.m. and 3 p.m. I take long
lunch breaks or rest under
trees. I work extra hours at
night.” Last year, the mercury
level soared to 42.7 degrees on
May 27. As per the Meteoroogical department’s records,
Chennai witnessed its hottest
day on May 31, 2003, when the
temperature reached 45
degrees.

Bike rider fatally
knocked down
Ramakrishnan (55), who
was running a tea stall in
Koyambedu, died after being
hit by a car from behind when
he was riding his motorbike on
Jawaharlal Nehru Road, near
Koyambedu flyover, on May
12.
Following the accident, he
was rushed to KMC Hospital
where he succumbed without
responding to treatment. The
car driver was arrested.
A case registered in Anna
Nagar Police Station is under
investigation.
