The Township of Seguin was created by Minister’s Order, dated May 8th, 1997. Pursuant to this Order, the Township of Seguin became a newly incorporated municipality, effective January 1st, 1998. The Township of Seguin is the amalgamated municipality of the former Townships of Christie, Foley and Humphrey, and the Village of Rosseau as well as an annexation of the western portion of the unorganized Township of Monteith. The Township of Seguin is the most southern municipality in the District of Parry Sound. It is also the first municipality with Northern Ontario status on the Highway 400 corridor. Public Services. Quality services are provided by the Township of Seguin through several means; that is, by employees of the Township, contractors or volunteers, or through joint municipal boards or committees. These services include land use planning, building inspections and permits, economic development, recreation and cultural facilities and programs, health and long-term care facilities and services, cemeteries, libraries, waste management and disposal services, fire prevention and protection, road construction and maintenance, animal control services and environmental programs. No fences are permitted within 20m of the shoreline. Decks & Porches Permits are required before building decks or porches. All decks and porches must meet the requirements of the Zoning By-Law. Accessory Structures Permits are required to build or to place a prefabricated shed, garage, or other freestanding structure greater than 10 square metres or containing plumbing. All structures regardless of size must meet the requirements of the Zoning By-Law. Exterior Lighting Post lamps, walkway lights, seasonal decorative lights and accent lighting are not regulated. However, Seguin strongly encourages lighting fixtures that are dark sky friendly, and don’t create light pollution. Cosmetic Improvements Maintenance activities such as replacement siding, painting, roofing, and landscaping require no permit. Plumbing, Electrical Work Permits are required for all installations or additions to a plumbing system. Permits for electrical work are required from the Electrical Safety Authority. (1.877.372.7233) Occupancy permits Occupancy permits are required prior to occupancy of all residential buildings. Lot boundary changes and rights-of-way (r.o.w.) Changing property boundaries and r.o.w. requires Township planning approvals which follow rules set by Seguin Council and the Province. Zoning Seguin Zoning By-law regulates how lands can be used. Uses and structures permitted on your property are identified together with allowed heights and setbacks from property boundaries. Minor variances from the Zoning By-law requirements may be possible from the Committee of Adjustment. Noise Seguin has a noise control By-law and a racing By-law. Smoke & CO alarms save lives! Fire Route Numbers The green 911 number posted at the end of each driveway helps emergency services locate your residence. Please ensure it is visible. Maintaining Private Roads It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain their private road, especially during the winter months. Open Burning Daytime burning requires a permit from April 1-October 31. Fire Hazard signs are located at waste stations and elsewhere throughout the municipality. Fire Hall Locations Insurance companies often require your distance from a fire hall to achieve rebates. Contact the Fire Department to confirm the distance or visit www.seguin.ca for a shuttle accreditation certificate. Household Waste Seguin utilizes a unique waste management system consisting of 7 unstaffed Transfer Sites (open 24/7) & 1 Landfill. TOWNSHIP OFFICE Large item disposal is available at the Seguin Landfill Site. This includes construction debris, furniture, appliances, electronics, tires, brush, boats, and scrap metal. SEGUIN LANDFILL Household Hazardous Waste The Household Hazardous Waste Depot is located in Parry Sound at the MacFarlane Street Transfer Station. The depot is available free of charge to all Seguin residents. Proof of residency will be required. The depot is open from mid April to mid-October each year. Public Parks & Beaches Seguin’s public parks & beaches feature a variety of amenities and facilities. Park hours generally follow daylight hours. There is no overnight parking. Recreational Programs Seguin’s Community Services Department offers many programs (skating, day camps, ball hockey, etc) for all ages throughout the year. Fees vary. Reserving Facilities Reservations for all Seguin Community Centres, ice bookings, and playing fields must be made by calling the Community Services Department. Licenses can be purchased at the Municipal Office. Leashing Dogs Dogs are required to be leashed anytime they are off your property. Tax Bills There are 2 tax bills per year. The Interim bill will be mailed mid-January, and has 2 installment payments, February & April. The Final bill will be mailed mid-June, and has 2 installment payments, July and September. Payment Options You may use the following options to pay taxes: cheque, cash, debit, telephone or internet banking, monthly pre-authorized payment plan (PAP) or the Automatic Tax Installment Withdrawal (ATIW).
