One example of ARCOL bespoke design is fitted as part of converter electronics in a number of wind generator designs connecting the ‘clean’ energy source to the grid. Power Resistors for Wind Turbines; Application example: The ARCOL HS resistors are used in AC-DC-AC IGBT-based PWM converters for voltage sharing and dc link discharge. The resistor is selected to force voltage sharing across the capacitor bank by setting the current through the resistor to be several times the current through the 12 paralleled capacitors. The resistors also act as a discharge circuit across the DC Link capacitor bank. The ARCOL product range has characteristics tailored, and ideally suited to these applications. THEMIS PROJECT Have you ever wondered where that HS50, HS100 or HS200 has gone? Well it has actually gone into space! Some ARCOL resistors are being used in the NASA ‘Themis’ project in America. The units are used as heat sources and have to operate in the vacuum of space. THEMIS is a mission to investigate what causes auroras in the Earth’s atmosphere to dramatically change from slowly shimmering waves of light to wildly shifting streaks of colour. Discovering what causes auroras to change will provide scientists with important details on how the planet’s magnetosphere works and the important Sun-Earth connection. If you are interested to know more – please go to http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/themis/ main/index.html Key attributes: High transient resistance and a wide range of pulse capabilities matched to the application with both high reliability and power density. They are available with a variety of terminal types and mountings to best suit customer requirements.
