Belden Extends Its DataTwist Limited Combustible (LC)
Cable Line With A New Category 6 Offering
Today’s communications demand high performance
cables for data formats such as 10BaseT, 100BaseT,
ATM and Gigabit Ethernet. And although these
advances in information technology have delivered
tremendous benefits to society, a hidden hazard
lurks in the plenum spaces of our buildings, that
is, high concentrations of cables made from
combustible materials.
To advance today’s performance needs and
combustibility concerns, Belden now offers easy-toinstall, high performance cables that meet not only
the TIA/EIA-568.B.2 Category 6 and 5e standards,
but also the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA)
90 standards for limited combustible cables.
Setting New Performance Standards
Belden DataTwist Cat 6 cable (7813LC), DataTwist
350 (1701LC) and DataTwist 5e (1585LC) Cat 5e
cables utilize a fluoropolymer jacket. This helps the
cables withstand the effects of heat and humidity
and provides significant oil and gas resistance,
resulting in outstanding electrical performance over
the life of the installation. Belden applies the print
legend directly on the cable jacket which presents
a distinct visual advantage over competitors who
supply a printed tape beneath the jacket surface.
Belden DataTwist Cat 6 and DataTwist 350 cables
also utilize a patented Bonded-Pair design which
bonds the two conductors of a twisted pair together
along the entire length of the cable. This unique
bonding technology prevents performance-robbing
gaps from forming between the conductors of
a pair during the rigors of installation. Gaps can
rob a cable of its electrical performance, resulting
in reduced network efficiency for the customer
and increased troubleshooting time for installers.
Since Belden Bonded-Pair cables cannot gap,
the customer gets the full after-installation
performance that they paid for, or Installable
Performance™. (Reference: Belden Technical
Bulletin 66, “The Impact of Installation Stresses
on Cable Performance.” )
Low Smoke, Low Flame
Spread Capability
Belden DataTwist Cat 6, DataTwist 350 and
DataTwist 5e cables feature 100% FEP Teflon®
primary insulation and jacket. They meet the full
requirements for limited combustible materials as
defined in NFPA 90A (Standard for the Installation
of Air-conditioning and Ventilation Systems).
Belden LC cables generate extremely low smoke
during fire situations — 17 times less than
standard CMP cables! And low smoke and less
flame spread can add valuable escape time to a
building evacuation. Limited combustible cables
can also reduce the amount of damage to
expensive electronic equipment important to
mission-critical facilities like data centers.
Belden LC cables also meet the proposed
NEC designation for cables suitable for use
in air ducts, plenums and other spaces used
for environmental air.
