Recalls Bulletin 01/07/10 - 31/12/10 VEHICLE SAFETY RECALLS Bulletin Number 72 Recalls3/06 Preface UK Recall System Recall campaigns are launched and monitored as agreed in the Codes of Practice formulated from discussions between the Department for Transport (DfT), and the representative bodies of the Motor Manufacturing Industry. The Codes set out the guidelines on procedures for the recall of vehicles and component parts that have safety related defects, due to a feature of design or construction, and which are liable to cause significant risk of injury or death to the driver, occupants of the vehicle or other road users. The first Code was introduced in 1979, followed by six other Codes covering other automotive related products. In the light of the introduction of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 which is the legal support for the Codes, they were reviewed and subsequently reduced to three, which are detailed below: = = = Code of Practice on Vehicle Safety Defects Code of Practice on the recall of Tyres, Wheels and associated parts in the aftermarket Code of Practice on the recall of Pedal Cycles It is the responsibility of the manufacturer/producer to inform the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) - the UK Enforcement Authority for product safety matters in the UK automotive sector - when substantial evidence of a safety defect that requires remedial action has been confirmed. Additionally, evidence may be presented to a manufacturer/producer by VOSA as a result of information received from a variety of sources. VOSA publishes, at regular intervals, details of all recalls notified under the various Codes in bi annual bulletins and on the VOSA website www.vosa.gov.uk/online services. USE OF THE RECALL INFORMATION POINT VOLUNTARY RECALL SYSTEM All owners of vehicles subject to a Code of Practice Safety Recall are contacted individually by the Manufacturers or Importers who use their own or DVLA records to locate owners. On some occasions notification is not received because the launch date of the Recall coincides with a change of vehicle ownership or owner address. If you suspect this could happen to you, it is recommended that you take the following action:a) Obtain the manufacturers or importers address either from the vehicle hand book or by using the Recall Information point at:The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited Consumer Affairs Department Forbes House Halkin Street London SW1X 7DS Tel: 0207 235 7000 b) Address your enquiry to the Customer Service Department of the Manufacturer or Importer of your vehicle or an approved dealer. The engine number is important with some Recalls, so state that as well. c) You should ask whether your vehicle model has been the subject of any Code of Practice Safety Recalls, and if it has, for confirmation that any necessary inspection or repair work has been completed. It is possible that these bolts could crack and fail. This could, in extreme cases, affect the directional control of the vehicle. Remedial Action: Recall all affected vehicles for the replacement of the cam-bolt. Reference R/2010/143 Launch Date Concern POTENTIAL OF PEDESTRIAN INJURY Make BENTLEY MOTOR CARS Model Start 23/09/2010 End BROOKLANDS AZURE ARNAGE Numbers Involved 359 Description of Defect It is possible, due to a build up of corrosion, that the "Flying B" mascot may not retract correctly when struck. If the vehicle is involved in a collison with a pedestrian and the mascot does not retract correctly, the pedestrian may suffer addiional injuries. Remedial Action: Recall the affected vehicles for the mascot mechanism to be replaced with a later version. Recalls Campaigns: Vehicle Type: Car Reference R/2010/102 Concern FIRE MAY OCCUR Make BMW Launch Date Start Model 04/08/2010 End 1 SERIES Numbers Involved 25 Description of Defect The top seat belt automatic reel with pyrotechnic ignited pre-tensioner fitted, is mounted too close to the sound insulation, both nearside and offside. If the vehicle is involved in a substantial collision where the pre-tensioners are deployed, a fire may occur as it is possible for the hot gases to ignite the sound insulation. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to rework the sound insulation fitted to both nearside and offside and if necessary fit new top seat belts Reference R/2010/151 Launch Date Concern POSSIBLE REDUCTION IN BRAKE SERVO ASSISTANCE Make BMW Model Start 11/11/2010 End 5 SERIES 7 SERIES 6 SERIES Numbers Involved 10522 Description of Defect It is possible that engine oil can enter the brake servo, via the brake vacuum pump and vacuum hose. If this occurs, it could damage the brake servo membrane, which may leak, so causing a reduction in braking assistance and a requirement to apply increased pedal force to achieve the same braking efficiency. Remedial Action: Recall all affected vehicles for the fitment of a modified servo hose. In addition, the checking of the brake servo for contamination and replacement if required. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to replace the fuel pump. This could result in overheating of the adhesive used to secure the heat shield and in extreme cases, it could cause the adhesive to ignite and result in a vehicle fire. Remedial Action: Recall the affected vehicles and replace the heat shield, this will include new mechanical fasteners. This may cause a knock from the steering and in extreme cases the fork may separate from the shaft and result in loss of steering control. Remedial Action: To check the shaft for the presence of the 2 'Stake' markings. In an extreme case, the inflator casing may rupture leading to a scattering of metal fragments. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to replace the front passenger airbag assembly. If the sidewall is weakened a bulge may be seen prior to the tyre deflating suddenly. If the tyre deflates suddenly, control of the vehicle may become difficult. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to replace the four tyres on the standard steel road wheels. This can result in a brake fluid leak, which will, when the fluid reaches a low level, illuminate the brake fluid low warning light on the dash. If the driver does not take any notice of the warning, it is possible that the brake performance of the vehicle could be affected. Remedial Action: Recall all affected vehicles and replace the rear seal with an improved one. Sante Fe models additionally have a similar concern with the front sub-frame. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to test the thickness of the metal of the suspension arms. If the corrosion is not too advanced the arms/sub-frame will be wax oiled. If the corrosion is advanced, the suspension arms will have to be changed. The fuel pump relay may not be energised following an engine start up cycle in which case the in-tank fuel pump will deliver insufficient fuel for the engine to run correctly. Remedial Action: Recalled vehicles will be re-programmed with revised software to ensure that when the engine is running the in-tank fuel pump relay remains energised. Should this condition occur the wipers will not fully clear the windscreen. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to check the tightness of the windscreen wiper spindle fixings and where necessary tighten to specification. Reference R/2010/105 Launch Date Concern FRONT SUSPENSION ARM MAY SEPERATE Make JEEP Model Start 04/10/2010 End CHEROKEE Numbers Involved 1707 Description of Defect The upper control arm ball joints fitted to the nearside and/or offside front suspension may experience a loss of lubricant which can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear and separation whilst driving. If the ball joint separates, directional control will be lost. Remedial Action: The recalled vehicles will have new front suspension upper control arms fitted the front suspension. Recalls Campaigns: Vehicle Type: Car Reference R/2010/129 Concern RISK OF FIRE Make KIA Launch Date Start Model 07/09/2010 End SORENTO Numbers Involved 549 Description of Defect The wiring to the "mood lighting" in the doors may overheat in use and, if ignored, there is a potential risk of fire. Remedial Action: Recalled vehicles to have the wiring to the "mood lights" replaced. Reference R/2010/140 Concern FUEL MAY LEAK Make LAMBORGHINI Launch Date Model Start End Murcielago Coupe ZHWBE16S07LA01805 ZHWBE37S08LA03235 21/05/2010 Numbers Involved 68 Description of Defect It is possible, due to fuel surge and vehicle vibration, that the spot welds on the fuel pump support bracket within the fuel tank may fail. This can result in a small fuel leak onto the floor and if an external heat source is present, then this could result in a fire. Remedial Action: Recall affected vehicles and replace the fuel tank. This will cause failure of the shaft seal, which will cause a fuel leak and if not rectified, could cause a vehicle fire. Remedial Action: Recall affected vehicles and replace fuel pump with the latest specification pump. Reference R/2010/137 Launch Date Concern GEARBOX MAY NOT PERFORM CORRECTLY Make MAZDA Model Start End PICK UP JMZUN8F970W805246 JMZUN8F970W805289 13/10/2010 Numbers Involved 75 Description of Defect The bracket that secures the automatic transmission shift cable to the transmission casing may crack and break. This is as a result of unnecessary welding. Should the bracket fail, then gear selection witl be extremely difficult or in extreme cases impossible. Remedial Action: Recall all affected vehicles and check the bracket. If the bracket has been welded, then replacement of the bracket is required. Recalls Campaigns: Vehicle Type: Car Reference R/2010/123 Concern FUEL MAY LEAK Make MERCEDES BENZ Model Launch Date Start 30/09/2010 End A CLASS B CLASS Numbers Involved 147 Description of Defect It is possible on some fuel tanks that the vent pipe is not to specification. This can lead to a small leak into the charcoal canister and if not rectified, can, over a period of time, result in a fuel leak. Remedial Action: Recall the affected vehicles and replace the fuel tank. Reference R/2010/124 Concern FUEL TANK MAY LEAK Make MERCEDES BENZ Launch Date Model Start End ATEGO WDB9700232K909060 WDB9700272K959986 12/10/2010 Numbers Involved 567 Description of Defect The forward supporting rail for the fuel tank may crack and, if not noticed may fail, resulting in the fuel tank dragging on the ground and eventually leaking fuel on to the road surface. Remedial Action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to, where necessary, replace the front supporting rail for the fuel tank and to retrofit a reinforcement.
