start next fall. Start saving UPC
codes this summer and bring them
to school in September!
The Campbells Labels for Education program is ending.
Please drop off any labels you have by the end of June.
Thank you for your support!
This is Phil Addis and I have been the president of our PTO for the past three years.
I am pleased to announce that Faye Ellis will be taking over that role for the 2016-2017
school year. This year, the PTO awarded grants of almost $20,000 for such things as
teacher supplies, books, art projects, funding for bus trips, iPads for the students, and
more. Since my time on the Board, the PTO has spent over $50,000 assisting the
students, staff and teachers at Emerson. What the PTO does touches every student in
our school and we could use your help. Please consider becoming a member of the
Emerson PTO and join us supporting our school. Thank you for allowing me to serve as
your PTO president and have great summer.

Ritewoy School Bus
We ot GO Riteway are committed to providing safe, quolity transportotion to our customers. We
know that we transport our most precious resource - our children. To meet this commitment, we
ensure that our school buses meet and exceed all safety requirements, our drivers ore well-troined to
drive and monoge the students and that our stalf provides the high level of service you expect.
Here ore some focts
obout the benefits of riding the school bus, our school bus fleet ond drivers os
well os the provisions we hove to ensure your student safe, comfortable tronsportotion to school.
About GO Ritewav
We are a familyowned and operated company, and have been in business in Wisconsin since 7957.
We are pleased to have been chosen as the transportation provider for the School District of La
Crosse. We currently serve nearly 30 School Districts in Wisconsin, and are excited to grow here in
La Crosse. As we start our operation here we're learning about the benefit of a wide variety of
school choices, the La Crosse community, as well as current school bus drivers. We intend to hire
locally, and we're excited to keep learning about this friendly, scenic and vibrant community!
Safetv on the School Bus
Our Number One Customer is the student who rides our school bus. We want our students to travel
to school safely and feel comfortable inside the bus. We work closely with our School Districts to
design the safest bus routes, busstops, develop student behaviorguidelines and train our drivers
to use them.
Having your parental support of these Guidelines is
where students feel at ease traveling to school.
criticalto maintaining an environment in the bus
Benefits of Ridine the School Bus
There are many good reasons for riding the school bus. School buses are designed to be safer
than passenger vehicles in avoiding crashes and pre-
venting injury. School bus traffic laws designed to
protect students are strictly enforced in communities.
School buses are the safest mode of transportation
for getting children back and forth to school in all
weather. The American School Bus Council reports
that students are 50 times more likely to arrive at
school safely if they take the bus than if they ride with
parents, drive themselves , or ride with friends.
Please remember the Red Warning Light
law. When you see a school bus stopped with Red flashing lights and the Stop sign extended-you are required by law to stop for the bus.
About our School Bus Drivers
Our school bus drivers are professionally trained and licensed Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV)
operators. The State of Wisconsin licenses each driver with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
and grants School Bus and Passenger endorsements which require additional training.
GO Ritewoyhas specific hiring criteria
driverapplicants must meet in orderto be employed. We
conduct a criminal background check and review the motor vehicle safety record of each applicant. Before hiring is complete , driver applicants are required to pass a physical and drug
screen. Drivers complete and pass a thorough training program that focuses on defensive driving techniques and managing students on their bus before going on the road.
Our on-going training program reinforces having well-trained, professional drivers. At the beginning of each school year, our drivers come back for re-evaluation and testing of driving skills.
Drivers are required to pass a physical at least every 2 years, participate in random drug and alcohol testing and attend on-going training.

Gearing up for summer and the 2016‐17 School Year! Go Riteway, the school district’s new bus transportation provider, is busy preparing to get ready to transport students beginning this summer! A temporary office site is being used for the coming school year until the company can secure a permanent facility going forward. A job fair was held in April where we welcomed anyone interested to apply. In addition, we held an open house for current bus drivers to come in and meet the Bast Family (the owners of the company), as well as staff that will be managing the facility. The manager and an HR/Safety Specialist have been hired and are working on getting the office set up, and hiring and training drivers. Additional staff include a local Routing Specialist and Charter/Activity Coordinator. The drivers will have a number of different trainings that they will be attending over the summer. In addition to a driving evaluation they will attend training on Operation Lifesaver (railroad crossing safety), First Observer (Situational Awareness), DDC4 (Defensive Driving), Backing, Pre‐Trip Inspections and PBIS training. Go Riteway’s Safety Director and On Site Implementation Coordinator, David Butcher, will be leading these training sessions. We will continue to accept applications for drivers through the spring and summer. Please go to our web page: www.goriteway.com and go to employment tab to look for opportunities. You may begin to see some Riteway busses around town! Summer school is right around the corner, and GO Riteway will be providing that transportation. Busses will be clearly labeled by the door to indicate what school they are traveling to. Information about summer school bus stop times will be available on the school district website in early June. Over the summer we encourage you to visit the school district website for information about the start of school and bus information. In mid‐August you will receive a letter from GO Riteway indicating your bus route number, stop location and stop time. If you have any bus related questions feel free to contact our office at 608‐881‐6370. Have a great summer! The Mississippi Volley Archaeology Center (MVAC) ot the University of

Asparagus
Nutrition Info
One cup of cooked asparagus has 40 calories.
Asparagus provides folic acid and vitamins A, C, & K.
Fun Facts
Under ideal conditions a spear of asparagus can grow up to 10
inches in a day!
Pick:
• Select asparagus spears
that are firm and bright
green in color, with tightly
closed tips and moist ends.
•Asparagus stalks that are thin
in diameter will be more
tender.
Store:
• If not using immediately,
wrap the cut ends in a damp
paper towel & place in a
plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Prepare:
•Cook asparagus as quickly as
possible after purchasing!
•Wash asparagus just before
preparation in cool running
water.
•Snap or cut off tough, dry
ends at their natural breaking
point.
Asparagus can be green, white or purple.
Asparagus plants are perennial, meaning that they grow back each
year without being replanted.
Uses
Fresh asparagus can be lightly steamed and then served warm or
cold.
Try grilled or roasted asparagus! Place asparagus spears on a
medium-high heat grill and cook for 5-8 minutes or until tender.
Fresh asparagus is a great addition to omelets, soups, casseroles
and stir frys.
Family Friendly Activities
Did you know that the polite way to eat asparagus is by hand?
Children love to eat finger foods! Have a creamy dip or
dressing for kids to dunk their asparagus spears into.
Have your child describe asparagus using all their senses. How does
it look? What does it remind them of? Does it smell? What
does it sound like when they snap off the ends?
