If you would like more information about entering more fully into our parish life & ministry, we ask that you complete the form below & give it to an usher, or send it into the Rectory. Thank You! I would like…. ____ to become a Parishioner ____ to change my address ____ to receive envelopes ____ to let the Parish know of someone who is ill, or homebound & would like to receive Communion Name: ___________________________ Address: ___________________________ Phone: ____________________________ ChurchoftheAssumption AnotefromthePastor DearbrothersandsistersinChrist, T ransitions mark many important moments of our life, and are necessary for our growth, for maturity, even for acquiring more wisdom and insight. Many of them actually happen during this time of the year. Recently, we rejoiced so much in the celebration of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Soon we will participate in all celebrations that mark the end of the School Year, including, of course, graduations. Perhaps some of you will also participate soon in the celebration of the wedding of some family member or friend – again, an important transition in life. As the summer season gets closer, our Parish is now going to face a significant transition regarding our clergy personnel. Archbishop Myers has appointed Fr. Miles as Parochial Vicar of the Parish of St. Michael in Union, NJ, effective June 22nd, 2016. Fr. Miles will be greatly missed by many here at Assumption. We appreciate the work done by him at our parish during more than seven years, and we pray that the Lord may bless him as he moves on to his new assignment. A farewell celebration in honor of Fr. Miles will be held Sunday, June 5th, 2-6 PM, at Colonial Inn, 545 Tappan Road, Norwood, NJ. Cost is $55 per person, due by May 29th. For questions and/or reservations, please contact Virginia Barker (201) 261-3490, or Nancy Petramale (201) 664-1424. Make check payable to Nancy Petramale, mail to 783 Tiffany Avenue, River Vale, NJ 07675. Many thanks to Mrs. Barker and Mrs. Petramale for organizing the event! Conversations with parishioners regarding Fr. Miles’ new appointment have made me think back at the moment when I arrived at Assumption, almost three years ago. In the light of what some are telling me, I can realize how difficult it was for many actually to receive me as the new pastor. Again, it was hard for them to go through some important transition. Some were expecting substantial changes in our parish, particularly in the way we would celebrate Mass; others were spreading news about my supposed affiliation with some form of “cult” or “association” not in communion with the Catholic Church; still others feared that I would modify the design of our church … Were those fears necessary, and founded on truth? Well, certainly, they didn’t make my transition an easy one! And, apparently, they haven’t decreased! Still today, people are asking me about some “secret plans” for the parish that I’m allegedly going to implement in the near future. They also lament that I answer vaguely to their inquiries in regard. The fact is that … there are (there has been) no such plans! I’m not here at Assumption to transform the parish into a new entity! I’m just a diocesan (diocesan!) priest, who apparently is supposed to work amidst clouds of doubts and fears and (sigh!) false suppositions, which don’t allow clear reasoning, sound judgment, and honest relationships based on trust. I believe we should take advantage of this new transition seriously to reflect about all these things. Withmyblessing, Fr.Paolo MAY8,2016 YOUcouldbeaPRAYERWARRIORandADORER? The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. 1. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14, 2016 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22, 2016. *Canon 920, 1.
