NM-B Conductors General Description NM-B-type cable is manufactured in 2, 3 or 4 soft copper conductors (solid or braided), with Nylon-coated 90°C PCV insulation, color-coded for identification, and an outer PVC layer. Specifications Underwrites Laboratories US 83 and UL 719. Characteristics and Applications Cables formed with soft copper conductors (phases) and ground conductor (paperinsulated wire). Designed for an operating range of 600 V and 90°C. They may be installed for concealed or visible wiring, normally in places like homes, residences or multiple-family housing with structures not exceeding three floors. NM-B cables are mainly installed in residential lighting, creating the outlet, switches and other links circuit networks. They can also be installed within the hollow of bricks (blocks) or within walls not subject to excess moisture. This type of cable must not be installed in places exposed to corrosive smoke or vapor, and they must not be embedded in masonry, concrete or in shallow places within masonry, or covered with plaster or any other similar finish. The use of these conductors is not recommendable as feeding cables in commercial sites, theaters, mobile movie stages, parking lots, elevators, or embedded in inverted concrete. www.iusa.mx 23 IUSA | Electrical Conductors ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS II. OVERHEAD AND UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION 600 V 75°C Overhead Distribution Cable General Description One-, two- or three-conductor, copper or aluminum cable, with individual high-density polyethylene (HDPE) black thermoplastic insulation, in helicoidal arrangement around a copper or aluminum neutral bare messenger conductor. Specifications Overhead distribution cables comply with the following specifications: NOM-063-SCFI: Electrical products-conductors-safety requirements. NMX-J-061: Multi-conductor cables for low voltage overhead distribution. CFE E0000-09: Multiple conductors for overhead distribution, 600 V, 75°C. Note: Can also be manufactured to ICEA Standard. Main Applications These cables are used in overhead, low voltage electric power distribution systems. As an overhead link-up for secondary services. In permanent or temporary electrical installations for general lighting. Characteristics Maximum operating voltage: 600 V. Maximum operating temperature in conductor: 75°C. Insulated copper conductors are manufactured as soft drawn and as bare conductor, hard or medium-hard drawn (CFE). Insulated and bare aluminum conductors are manufactured from 1350 aluminum alloy, hard drawn (H19). ASCR bare conductors are manufactured from 1350 aluminum alloy, hard drawn, steel core. Black insulation that makes it sunlight-resistant. Advantages Hard or medium-hard drawn allow it to support installation stress and a longer postto-post length. Polyethylene insulation helps resist abrasion caused by tree branches. Sunlight and outdoor resistant. Insulation avoids energy theft. 40 ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS V. OVERHEAD AND UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION 15, 25 And 35 KV Semi-Insulated Cables General Description Cable with copper, aluminum (AAC) or steel-reinforced aluminum (ACSR) with semiconductor mesh extruded over conductor and insulation – black cross-link polyethylene (XLP) jacket. Specifications Semi-insulated cables comply with the following specifications: CFE E0000-29: Semi-insulated cables for 15 to 25 kV overhead power lines. Main Applications Semi-insulated cables are used in medium voltage overhead power distribution systems, through wooded areas. Characteristics Maximum operating voltage: 15, 25 and 35 kV. Maximum operating temperature: 90°C. Copper conductors are hard-drawn. Aluminum conductors are hard-drawn 1350 alloy (H19) and steel core. Black insulation-jacket makes it sunlight-resistant. As they do not have an insulation mesh, these cables are considered non-insulated, thus must be handled with the care and precautions you would any non-insulated cable. Advantages Cross-link polyethylene (XLP) insulation-jacket helps it resist abrasion caused by tree branches. Sunlight-resistant. Hard-drawn aluminum cables and ACSR-type cables allow installations with a longer post-to-post distance. MEDIUM VOLTAGE Airport-Type Cable General Description Single-conductor cable formed by a soft copper conductor with semiconductor mesh over conductor, cross-link polyethylene (XLP) insulation and PVC outer jacket. Specifications Medium voltage no-mesh cables comply with the following specifications: ICEA S-66-524: Cross linked thermosetting polyethylene insulated wire and cable for the transmission of electrical energy. Main Applications These cables are used in the high-voltage supply and distribution in buildings with substations located at different levels. Serial lighting circuits, frequently used in airport landing strips. Installations that require abrasion-resistant light cables, such as installations in bridges or ships, overhead networks and vertical installations. Characteristics Maximum operating voltage: 5 kV. Maximum operating temperature: 90°C. Compressed concentric-lay soft copper conductors, gauges 8,37 mm2 and 13,3 mm2 (8 and 6 AWG). May be manufactured in other gauges upon request. Packing: as required by client. Advantages Lighter than equivalent cables with mesh and jacket. Insulation makes it weather-, sunlight- and chemical agent-resistant. May be buried directly. Excellent electrical and mechanical characteristics. Because of its decreased diameter and lack of a mesh, this cable can be installed in smaller curve radio.
