Monitors / Sets
Open Frame LCD Displays
Open Frame LCD displays, sometimes called LCD Modules or Sets, are essentially
a complete monitor set without an outer chassis. This enables their use in various
mounting applications, such as in Industrial Testing Equipment, Gaming Machines,
Aerospace Control Panels, ATM Machines, Medical Devices, Military, Marine, and
Kiosk Displays.
Open Frame LCD Displays are ideal for OEMs and system Integrators that need to
display rich and vibrant content within the confines of their own enclosure. These
industrial displays can also be bonded with a variety of touchscreen, optical film,
and cover glass types.
Industrial LCD Monitors
Industrial LCD monitors are commonly utilized in environments where standard
commercial grade monitors might not be able to survive. These monitors are
complete with plastic enclosure, and all the appropriate connectors and interfaces
for easy plug in installation.
Both Industrial LCD display monitors and Open Frame
displays can be categorized into four different areas.
1) Ruggedized
High quantities of dust, moisture, dirt, oil, and other liquid contaminants may be
found in industrial environments where rugged displays are a necessity.
Rugged LCD displays and monitors are mostly NEMA 6 / IP67 / IP65 / IP66
compliant, which makes them resistant to liquids, and dirt, while also able to
sustain operation in extreme temperature environments of -40°C to +70°C.

2) Medical Devices
Medical devices are the backbone of the modern Healthcare Industry
worldwide. Critical patient information is shown for the facility staff from
devices that measure heart signals, MRI and CAT Scans. LCD displays are used
nearly in every modern medical device for displaying information and allow
interactivity for the patients.
Medical devices must meet specifications that fulfill the strict requirements of
the tasks. Displays, such as those used for X-Ray or CT Scans, require a high
level of precision, resolution, color saturation and contrast.
The higher image quality provides physicians and doctors with vital information
that may not have been visible with lower-quality displays. Displays used in a
hospital setting also require a higher level of protection from the wear and tear
of cleaning solvents.
3) Gaming Machines and Kiosks
These displays can serve Gaming Machine requirements, as well as Kiosk
and POS applications. Specifications in this segment may include, custom cut
shapes, specific viewing angles, and contrast and brightness ratios that lend
themselves to an indoor environment with close contact to the viewer.
4) Sunlight Readable Monitors and Displays
Sunlight readability of an Industrial Monitor Display is determined by the
difference between the external ambient light and the display’s internal
illumination (backlight brightness). Illumination is a measure of energy
expressed in Cd/m2. The surface of the LCD must emit or reflect enough light
to match the illumination of the sunlight or external light sources, for the display
to be sunlight readable.

LCD Controllers
LCD panels receive data in many formats – RGB, MIPI, TTL or LVDS signals – and the LCD
controller outputs the same data in a format that the LCD can display. An LCD controller
card manages features, video inputs and other options. From multiple video capabilities
and input switching for broadcast applications, to hardened electrical components for
harsh environments, to high-resolution for graphics professionals, LCD panel controllers
are interchangeable, each providing design-specific capabilities for various end use

LED Drivers
The use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is the most common method of providing
backlighting to LCDs. The new generation of High-Bright LEDs (HB-LEDs) provides
a quantum leap in brightness, as well as higher reliability, more durability, lower power
consumption, better dimming, and a wider temperature range. While highly beneficial, LED
backlights also create new power supply challenges that cannot be met by the many single
chip ICs available on the market. A full-function power supply LED driver is required to
achieve optimum performance from LED BLUs.
LED backlighting is ideal for:

-- Projects that will be operating in the
extreme cold, high altitude or high-bright
applications such as ATMs, gas pumps,
portable medical equipment, marine
navigation displays, aircraft cockpits or
automotive passenger entertainment.
In backlighting situations, single-chip ICs

ratio because LEDs take less time to
power up.
-- Green designs because LEDs do not
contain mercury like CCFLs do.
-- Power-sensitive designs because LEDs
typically lower power requirements.

string is required to operate below +25°C
(+77°F) the LEDs may not light at all
because the LED string voltage is greater.
LED driver boards account for voltage

functionality.
