By John Cariani / Directed by Marie Ventrone On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream. The Wall Street Journal named Portland Stage’s production of ALMOST, MAINE one of ten must-see shows for the 2004-2005 regional theater season. By David Mamet / Directed by Amy Sellars Disclaimer: This play contains adult subject matter and content, and is not suitable for children. A male college instructor and his female student sit down to discuss her grades and in a terrifyingly short time become the participants in a modern reprise of the Inquisition. Innocuous remarks suddenly turn damning. Socratic dialogue gives way to heated assault. The relationship between a somewhat fatuous teacher and his seemingly hapless pupil turns into a fiendishly accurate x-ray of the mechanisms of power, censorship and abuse. A war of words, verbal jousting, and thought-provoking piece. Everyone will have an opinion to express after the curtain falls on Oleanna. April 7, 8, 9*, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22** Auditions: Feb. 12, 13 CB: Feb. 15 Nutley, NJ 07110 Post Office Box 131 *2 p.m. / ** There will be a 2 p.m. and an 8 p.m. performance on April 22. Directed by Dickson Lane Following in the tradition of our British counterparts, Nutley Little Theatre is presenting a “Holiday Panto.” This is sure to be a fun time for young and old alike. Filled with music, humor and just all-around good fun, and generally wrapped around a message of hope and good will, the Panto can be anything from a staged reading, to a series of sketches to a well-known short play about the holidays or life its own self. We’ll have more information about the specific Panto later in the season. We are hoping this will become a regular tradition, but let’s see how much you like this first one. December 9, 10, 11*, 16, 17** *2 p.m. / **There will be a 2 p.m. and an 8 p.m. performance on December 17. This is a fundraiser solely for the benefit of Nutley Little Theatre. By Paul Rudnick / Directed by Ron Mulligan Disclaimer: This play contains adult subject matter and content, and is not suitable for children. This witty Manhattan comedy explores marriage equality, friendships and squandered riches. Take one high-powered attorney, blend with his deliriously social fashionista wife, and stir things up with their closest friend, one of the world’s most staggeringly successful fashion designers. Add a “bridezilla” daughter and mix with a wacky maid, a cocktail-fueled mother, President G.W. Bush and stir to create a “saucy, sharp-tongued comedy of uncivil disobedience”—N.Y. Sun.
