Assistant Superintendent– effective August 1, 2016 Adjacent to Victoria on southern Vancouver Island, School District 62 (Sooke) is the fastest growing district on the island. Currently with 9800 students and 27 schools, the district is expected to grow at 300 students per year (3 to 4% annually) over the next ten years. School District 62 operates in five municipalities, Sooke, Metchosin, Colwood, Langford and Highlands and serves three First Nations communities. The district is financially stable with an operating budget of $90 million plus. Working in this school district is a great opportunity to be part of the plan for the future including our two brand new secondary schools. This is a progressive school district that meets the needs of students by offering French immersion, distance education, alternative, gifted, fine arts and career education programs. The Position The Assistant Superintendent is a vital member of the senior executive team, sharing in the leadership, management and future direction of the school district. The Assistant Superintendent coordinates the work of members of the District's supervisory staff who work in the areas of curriculum and special programs. This position acts in a leadership capacity in support of the Superintendent and trustees’ strategic direction. You will be responsible to identify and address issues of concern in education and in building understanding and consensus around the actions required to remedy. You will provide the drive and vision that leads, motivates and guides staff to realize and achieve the District’s strategic plan and objectives. The successful candidate will have a proven leadership record of collaboration and consensus building as well as a record of making significant contributions to educational programming. Required Qualifications • Master’s Degree in Education Administration, Curriculum or a related field. • Professional certificate and previous school based administration experience. • Eligible for membership in the Ministry of Education – Teacher Regulation Branch. • K-­12 curriculum expertise and knowledge of effective instructional practices. • Proven ability to build positive working relationships with partners including the Board and Management Team. • Sound personnel management expertise with a high level of integrity and a strong work ethic. • Effective group facilitating practices. • Knowledge and understanding of Human Resources management and labour relations in a unionized environment. Desired Qualifications • Experience in analyzing and interpreting data towards effective instructional methods. • An understanding of and ability to promote change strategies. • An understanding of current trends and the role of technology in education today. • Experience in conflict resolution and exemplary interpersonal skills at the individual and group level.
