NOTE- No non-registered children will be allowed in the Math Emporium. We will be taking pictures at this event. If you do
not want your picture used as publicity or for education purposes of the program by Virginia Tech, you should wear a
purple shirt. Faces of parents/guardians wearing any purple shirt will not be used.
Interactive Session with the Scientist
Parking
Parking will be available in the area between Perry St & Prices Fork Rd. We have verified with the campus parking and
the VT police departments that parking in these lots is allowed. If you have questions about parking, please contact
parking@vt.edu.
9:45 am- Dropping Off Children/Viewing the Interactive Session with the Scientist
• Go to McBryde Hall, Room 100.
• Find the volunteer holding a sign corresponding to the first letters of your child’s last name.
• Turn in your child’s completed 4-H health history form and consent form to the volunteer.
• Sign in your child with the volunteer (your child receives their lanyard with ID & lunch card here).
• Please exit through the back of the auditorium.
• Please proceed to Torgersen Hall, Room 2150 or 3100, to view the Interactive Session via live video feed. Please
remember there is a 30 min. time after the Session for the kids to ask questions to the scientist. You are welcome
to stay in this room to view the question/answer time, otherwise you will have to wait in line outside McByde Hall
before picking them up.
11:45 am- After the Interactive Session with the Scientist
• After the lecture, please return to McBryde Hall, Room 100, where you will sign out your child.
• Keep the lanyard and nametag. A sticky label in the back of their lanyard will be used for entrance into the handson activity.
• Make sure your child has a Hokie Passport lunch card!
12:00 pm- LUNCH
Your child will receive a Hokie Passport lunch card with $6 on it for each KTU event. You are responsible for taking your
child to a campus dining facility to get lunch. Options include Hokie Grill and Owens Food Court, both located in the
Owens Dining Center (please see the campus map and the document “Lunch dining information” at
http://kidstechuniversity.vbi.vt.edu/kidstechuniversity/pdfs/kidstech_ktu_form/2011-Lunch-Dining-Info.pdf ), West End
Market and Squires Food Court. You (parent/guardian) are responsible for paying for your own meal. If you decide not to
use the lunch card, KTU will not be charged for the $6. Please note that restrooms in the Math Emporium (see next
activity) will not be available before 1:30 pm. Please plan accordingly!
1:30-3:30 pm HANDS-ON-ACTIVITY
HANDS-ON-ACTIVITIES
**You are responsible for bringing your children to the hands-on activities.** Dr. Will Mather, Associate Professor, VT
Physics Department, will be in an adjacent room in the Math Emporium leading a discussion and answering questions.
After parents have dropped their child off with a volunteer, please meet around the fountain to be escorted into the room.
1:30 pm- Drop off your child at the Math Emporium in the University Mall; look for a sign corresponding to the child’s last
name and sign them in with a volunteer (i.e. give the volunteer your preprinted sticky label).
1:30-3:30 pm- Children will be in the Math Emporium taking part in an online activity.
3:30 pm- Pick up child; go back to the sign where you dropped them off. You will pick them up here.
Information about parking:
Parking at the Math Emporium, University Mall, University City Blvd. Blacksburg, VA 24060
Parking is in the parking garage on the left (as you are facing the mall) side of the mall; available in front of University
Mall; in the parking lot across the street from the mall; and in the Inn of Virginia Tech parking lot, located at the
intersection of Prices Fork Rd. and University City Blvd. You can get a map to University Mall which originates from
McBryde Hall on the KTU website at http://kidstechuniversity.vbi.vt.edu/forms-and-documents . It is HIGHLY ADVISED to
park in the University Mall parking garage.
