My column the next few weeks will focus on aspects of these disciplines, beginning with prayer. One practice that helps me and that I often share with others is a practice known as The Examen Prayer. The basics of The Examen are found in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. (Founder of the Jesuits). A good time to pray The Examen Prayer is at night. Essentially, The Examen is a prayerful assessment of your day. It is a review of the graces, blessings, crosses and burdens you received during the day. Here are the steps: Presence: Remember that you are in the presence of God in a special way when you pray. Praise God and ask for help in your prayer. Gratitude: Recall two or three things that happened today that you are particularly grateful. (For example, a person or something that happened to you). Savor them. Then, thank God for these gifts. Review: When did you experience God’s presence? Notice everything from large to small. From a cup of coffee with a family member or friend to the sun shining upon your face. When did you love? When were you loved? Sorrow: You may have sinned today or done something you regret. Express your sorrow to the Lord and ask for forgiveness. If it is a grave sin seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Look Forward: Look forward to tomorrow and ask the Lord for help and the grace to follow Him and to love others throughout the day. Close your prayer with an Our Father. The Examen Prayer is much more than an examination of conscience which focuses on sinfulness. It is also a review of the blessings and gifts that you received and opportunity for thanksgiving and renewal. God Bless you and your Family Fr. Vince A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE (Mark 9:2-10) The apostles thought they knew Jesus, but when he changed in front of them at the Transfiguration, they were “afraid.” In families we cannot freeze relationships because change and growth are inevitable. Children grow up, parents grow old and spouses change. Transfigurations are all around us and within us. Relationships can only grow when we embrace the new and let go of the old. STEWARDS SHOW GRATITUDE (Genesis 15:7) “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we as Stewards show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home? February 21, 2016 ~ 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (free will offering will be taken up) St. Michael’s Church ~ Port Norris Page 4 February 21st, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent Desde el escritorio del Pastor… The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. C40281 (JA) - Holy Cross, Bridgeton AVAILABLE NOW!
