6 | GUIDE TO HEALTH CARE south florida business journal | SEPTEMBER 2010 Alexandra Dominguez with Marty Sargeant, COO at Cleveland Clinic Florida, which aligns its caregivers around specialty institutes. MARK FREERKS Hospitals emphasize excellence in variety of ways By Bill Frogameni Building and keeping a good reputation is no easy task for hospitals and health care systems. That’s why South Florida’s health care providers make a special effort to stress the positive. Aside from focusing on giving great care, they rely on emphasizing their excellence in specialty treatment, third-party rankings and community outreach to promote their brands. Cleveland Clinic Florida aligns its caregivers around specialty institutes, COO Marty Sargeant said. For instance, nonsurgical cardiologists are in close contact with cardiac surgeons in a department devoted to heart health. This allows for a holistic approach to preventing and treating disease, he said. “They are all aligned in treating the patient’s disease,” he said. “It promotes a superior level of communication.” Patients also benefit from Cleveland Clinic Florida’s heavy reliance on electronic medical records, which makes giving care easier, he said. Cleveland Clinic is on schedule to have all its records online by 2011, well ahead of the federal deadline for reaching that goal, he noted. The clinic has been ranked for excellence by Thomson Reuters, U.S. News & World Report and the American Heart Association, among others. It uses these honors for marketing, but it won’t rely on some ratings services, like HealthGrades, because those companies charge hospitals a fee to publish their ranking, Sargeant said. “We feel [that paying to have its ranking published] adds an element that can be misconstrued, frankly,” he said. Tenet Healthcare, on the other hand, does use HealthGrades, said Marsha Powers, senior VP for the Florida region. “I think that you can’t take any Powers one designation in isolation,” she said. “I think you have to look at everything.” But, community outreach is one of the biggest ways Tenet distinguishes itself, she said. Its facilities have numerous events geared toward improving public health. For little or no cost, patients with or without insurance can go to Tenet facilities for things such as heart screenings, vascular screenings and cholesterol checks, Pow- ‘I think that you can't take any one designation in isolation. I think you have to look at everything.’ Marsha Powers | Tenet Healthcare ers said. The good will these events generate can go a long way for Tenet in the age of complex insurance rules and killer co-payments. “One of the ways we brand ourselves is to try to put the community back in community hospitals,” she said. “We do a lot of preventative screenings.” Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach makes its mark primarily by offering excellent care, CEO Steven Sonenreich said. “Mount Sinai has always been recognized as a major academic center, with specialties in many areas,” he said. “In particular, cardiovascular disease has been a hallmark of excellence for us historically.” The hospital prides itself on teaching and research, which help it attract top talent. Mount Sinai is one of only six statutory teaching hospitals recognized by the state of Florida. That means the hospital must have at least 100 residents and fellows, and at least 10 residency-training programs, he said. “That’s something we’re particularly proud of,” Sonenreich said. Tradition and spiritual mission are a big part of the identity at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, spokeswoman Christine Moncrieffe said. “We are Broward County’s only Catholic hospital, so we have the advantage of the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy who have sponsored the hospital since 1959.” Aside from providing chaplains of different faiths for round-theclock spiritual care, patients see the hospital’s chapel as they enter the complex. This is a reminder to everyone at the institution that the mission is “to reverence each patient,” she said. “Our mission is you, the patient.” bfrogameni@bizjournals.com | (954) 949-7511 LIST || 25 GUIDE TO HEALTHTHECARE 13 south business journal | auGust |13-19, 2010 southflorida florida business journal SEPTEMBER 2010 Largest Hospitals Ranked by fiscal year 2009 net operating revenue Rank 2010 2009 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 5 5 4 6 6 7 7 8 8 9 9 10 11 11 10 12 12 Hospital Address Phone Fax Web site Jackson Health System ($178.2) $91.9 1,073.8 977.2 (786) 596-1960 (786) 596-2428 www.baptisthealth.net $781.2 $705.5 $56.9 $81.6 122.3 94.2 (954) 987-2000 (954) 985-3453 www.memorialregional.com $661.8 $638.5 $10 $2.9 256.5 229.4 (786) 662-4000 (786) 662-5325 www.baptisthealth.net $434 $384.4 $41.1 $14.1 42.8 31.5 (305) 674-2121 (305) 567-4215 www.msmc.com $403.2 $395.1 $7 ($13.8) 34.6 32.2 (954) 355-4400 (954) 468-8046 www.browardhealth.org $386.4 $358.3 $49.6 $40.5 $216.6 $221 (561) 965-7300 (561) 548-3696 www.jfkmc.com $362.1 $344 $3 ($5.9) $100.4 $87 (305) 666-6511 (305) 663-8520 www.mch.com $356.3 $315.9 $94.9 ($72) $7.2 $8 (954) 436-5000 (954) 433-7155 www.memorialwest.com $339.7 $306.3 $50.1 $30.4 $60.9 $41.5 (561) 395-7100 (561) 955-5151 www.brch.com $313.9 $278.1 ($3.8) ($68.8) $4.5 $5.1 (954) 771-8000 $302.6 $288.3 $16.2 ($25.1) $12.2 $15 $278.7 $245.6 $39.7 $36 $1.1 $1.8 (305) 325-5511 (305) 325-4673 www.umiamihospital.com $253.4 $97.1 ($8.1) ($11.5) $16.2 $5 (561) 498-4440 (561) 637-5297 www.delraymedicalctr.com $239.8 $235.8 $14.1 $5.3 $28.3 $35.2 $231.4 $210.5 $17.2 $7 $49.9 $39.9 Baptist Hospital 8900 N.
