19 inch rack providing a 1.75 inch air gap is left above and below
and a 1.0 inch air gap is left on the sides.
3.
The connection of such equipment to a public telecommunications
network in a European Community Member State will be in
violation of the national law implementing Directive 91/263/EEC on
the approximation of the laws of the Member States concerning
telecommunication terminal equipment, including mutual

Environmental Considerations
Equipment in a Rack
1.
Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature - If installed in a closed or
multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the
rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore,
consideration should be given when installing the equipment in a
rack. Maximum ambient temperature of Optica Technologies
Incorporated equipment is +40º C.
2.
Reduced Airflow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be
such that the amount of airflow required for safe operation of the
equipment is not compromised.
3.
Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in a rack should
be such that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven
loading.
4.
Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the
connection of equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that
overloading of circuits might have on over-current protection and
supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate
rating should be used when addressing this concern.
5.
Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment
should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply
connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g.,
use of power strips).
Quick Start Guide
This Quick Start Guide is for qualified technicians who are familiar with
the ESCON/Bus &Tag environment. If you are new to this technology,
you should read all the instructions in the 34600 User Guide to ensure
proper setup and operation of the 34600 FXBT Converter. The 34600 User
Guide is available for download from our website,
www.OpticaTech.com.

Preparing for Installation
To ensure proper FXBT operation, you must have the following items
and tools:
•
A # 2 slotted and/or a # 2 Phillips Head screwdriver.
Selecting the Installation Location
The location of the FXBT should be clean, flat and dry. The FXBT may
be installed:
•
•
A. stand-alone, or
B. rack-mounted in a rack panel available from Optica Technologies
Either location should be within 6 feet (2meters) of power and should
also conform to the environmental specifications typically required in
data processing centers.
Stand-alone units may be installed:
•
•
under-floor
on a shelf in an equipment cabinet
•
on a table top or on the floor in an out-of-the-way location
Configurations
The 34600 FXBT Converter is connected directly to a native CNC channel
via a fiber optic MTRJ-to-MTRJ (or duplex-to-MTRJ) cable. The bus and
tag devices are then connected to a bus and tag "Y" cable that is
connected to the FXBT converter. An RJ-45 cable may also be connected
to the FXBT to allow OPTICA personnel to access the converter to read
any status or error logs and to facilitate microcode upgrades.
34600 FXBT Configuration
Connecting to the ESCON port
The FXBT MTRJ fiber optic port requires an MTRJ to MTRJ (or duplex to
MTRJ) fiber optic jumper cable to attach it to the channel. To attach the
FXBT to the ESCON channel, follow the following steps:
1.
Remove the jumper from the protective bag and remove one
protective dust cap from the MTRJ end.
2.
Remove the dust cap from the transceiver of the FXBT and insert the
uncovered end of the jumper into the transceiver.
3.
Route the other end of the jumper to the ESCON channel, being
careful not to kink or stress the jumper.
4.
Remove the dust cap and connect the jumper to the indicated
ESCON channel.
Connecting to the Bus and Tag Devices
The FXBT Bus and Tag port requires a Y connection cable (Optica
Technologies P/N 149510, IBM P/N 6473053) to attach it to the legacy
Bus and Tag devices. To attach the FXBT to the devices, follow the
following steps:
1.
Connect the 78 pin D-connector of the Y Cable to the 78 pin Dconnector of the converter. Be sure to tighten the thumbscrews to
finger tightness.
2.
Connect the dark end of the Bus and Tag cables to the serpentine
ends of the Y Cable (being sure you attach the Bus to the Bus and the
Tag to the Tag).
NOTE: Maximum Fiber Distances
The maximum multi-mode fiber optic cable distance supported for an ESCON
channel operating in native (CNC) mode, including ESCDs, is 3000 meters (9843
feet), some exceptions apply. See the Owners Manual for device-specific
limitations.
Indicators
The FXBT has a four character display window and four LED indicators
to provide status information. During normal operations the address of
the converter rolls across the window.
Indicator Definitions:

receiving incorrect link sequences
(BLINKING): The converter is not connected to an active ESCON
channel or the channel is configured offline.
FIBER ACTIVE: (GREEN)
The converter is connected to an active ESCON channel.
ERROR: (RED)
The converter has encountered a condition that has resulted in an error
log entry being generated. Normal operation continues.
CU ACTIVE: (GREEN)
The converter is actively communicating with a bus/tag device (OP IN).
Character Window:
NORMAL OPERATIONS:
Scrolls the Optica microcode version and the current TCP/IP address of
the FXBT.
POWERING UP:
Various numbers and characters indicating what stage the power-on
diagnostics and self tests are in.
