"It is an indication of the priority

peacemaking in the Middle East,"
Clinton said in a statement Thursday announcing the eight-day trip by
Warren M. Christopher.
Christopher was optimistic his
first overseas venture would succeed. "I think we will see a resumption of the peace process at an early
date," he said while posing for pictures in his office with visiting German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel.
Clinton declared "This is a historic moment," adding the peace
process "can slip away all too easily."
Christopher is. due to leave for Israel on Feb. 17. Richard A Boucher,
the State Department spokesman,
said the secretary would remain in
the area until Feb. 24, visiting Arab
countries as well, and then make
some stops in Western Europe before flying home.
He plans to meet along the way
with Russian Foreign Minister Andrei V. Kozyrev. They are expected
to make preparations for a summit
meeting between Clinton and Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin.
Over the last two days, a senior
U.S. official said, Christopher spoke
on the telephone with Kozyrev,
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres of
Israel, King Hussein and Prime
Minister Zaid bin Shaker of Jordan,
Foreign Ministers Farouk Shaara of
Syria, Amre Moussa of Egypt and

MOSCOW - Russian scientists
unfurled a mirror in space on Thursday and briefly bounced sunlight
onto the night side of Earth, testing
a new solar spotlight that could
eventually 'illuminate parts of the
planet.
The troubled Russian space agency hailed the experiment as a qualified success and immediately began
fishing for investors, saying the predawn test proved a space spotlight

It was unclear whether the experiment, named Operation Banner,
came off exactly as planned But officials claimed victory in the most

"It was not completely successful, but it did go rather well,'* said
Semyon Lukasky, an aide to the project director. He declined to specify
the troubles, saying full details
would be released later.
Russian television, giving no
source, suggested that radial slats in
the circular sheet had opened wider
than planned. It showed what it
called a videotape of the aluminumcoated sheet looking something like
a propeller.

Wednesday), after the ship was detached from the orbiting Mir space
station, Blagov said from the control
center north of Moscow.
The videotape made by Mir's
two-man crew showed the mirror
opening slowly - like a metallic
flower blossoming - from one end
of the Progress. In a profile view, it
looked like a silver umbrella over
the end'of the spaceship.
Blagov said that after the mirror
was opened, scientists angled it to
reflect sunlight from the opposite
side of Earth onto the night side of
the planet.
The beam of reflected sunlight
created a weak spot of light on the

Poleshchuk, looking down from the
Mir, "observed a section of our planet's surface illuminated with sunlight," the ITAR-Tass news agency
said.
Scientists had said the spot

MOSCOW -• The American doctor who helped treat victims of the
1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster on
Thursday announced a Russian lottery that he hopes will raise $1 billion to pay for more research and
medical treatment.
"We're desperate for money,"
said Dr. Robert Gale, the American
bone marrow specialist.
The tickets are being sold for $1
or its ruble equivalent "because this
is the only way to protect the proceeds from inflation," said Vladimir
Tkach, director of the Children of
Chernobyl lottery.
The target could prove difficult to
reach. One dollar at the current exchange rate is 572 rubles, a day's
wage for many Russians.
The tickets, printed in the United
States, went on sale Jan. 15 at kiosks, street vendors and hard currency shops. Prizes range from $5 to
$100,000. Some of the winners will
get tickets entering them in the Kentucky state lottery.
After the April 1986 accident at
the Chernobyl nuclear power station
in Ukraine, Gate flew in and helped
Soviet doctors treat 499 people at
Moscow's Hospital No. 6.
"Twenty-nine died from radiation but the other 470 are alive and
quite well and we continue to follow
them in the clinic/' Gale said at a
news conference. Two others died at
the site of the explosion, the world's
worst nuclear accident.
