Submit this page with your solutions to the following problems as you enter the lab class. There
are a total of 4 marks for these problems. Show your work - answers without supporting work will
get zero marks.
Bring a watch ( or stop watch or other timer ) capable of measuring seconds to this lab.
1. Designate the following as either intensive or extensive properties: heat capacity C, specific
heat capacity and molar heat capacity Cm. Explain. ( 1.5 marks )
2. The specific heat capacities of lead, copper and magnesium are (in J/g-degree): 0.128, 0.385
and 1.024. Calculate and compare the molar heat capacities of these three metals. (1 mark)
(Questions continue on the next page)

PRELAB ASSIGNMENT (Continued)
3. Evaluate the following expression:
( 25.3 - 20.2 ) x ( 1.000 x 10-5 )
Calculate the answer to the correct number of significant figures. Show your work.
(0.5 marks)
4. Consider a log burning in a stone fireplace. Define the system (note that a variety of answers
are possible). (1 mark)
5. You might want to view the video "Thermite Reaction" on the Zumdahl CD (Chapter 6). No
marks are given for this activity.

Show your work - answers without supporting work will get zero marks. Give units and use the
correct number of significant figures in all calculations.
Part I.
A. Heat capacity of metal block: your graph for this part must be attached (2 marks).
Results
Ti of metal block
mass of the metal block
volume of water in the cup
calculated mass of water
in the cup
Ti of water in calorimeter
Tf = Te ( from your graph )
1. In the space below, show your calculation of the specific heat capacity (in the units J g-1 °C-1 )
of the metal block. (2 marks)
P-4
B. Heat capacity of 2-PrOH: your graph for this part must be attached (2 marks).
Results
Ti of metal block
mass of the metal block
mass of the cups
mass of 2-PrOH and cups
Ti of 2-PrOH in calorimeter
Tf = Te ( from your graph )
mass of 2-PrOH in the cups
In the space below, show your calculation of the specific heat capacity (in the units J g-1 °C-1 )
of 2-propanol. (2 marks)
P-5
Part II. Enthalpy of fusion of ice: your graph for this part must be attached (2 marks).
Results
Ti of "room temp" water
mass of cups
mass of cups containing "room
mass of cups containing 50.0
temp" water and "ice-water"
mL of "room temp" water
mass of the 50.0 mL of "room
temp" water (= mass of water
initially in the calorimeter)
Ti of ice
mass of "ice-water"
( = original mass of ice added )
Tf = Te ( from your graph )
In the space below, show your calculation ∆Hfusion per mole of ice ( 2 marks ).
