STATEMENT OF PRIMARY DUTIES:
Enforces compliance with adopted codes and municipal ordinances for the Development Services
Department. Conducts technical and life safety inspections of both private and public property, issues
citations, and testifies in court.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Investigation, enforcement, and resolution of complaints and violations of adopted Building
Codes and ordinances to include issuance of citations, prepare cases for and testify in court.
• Maintain accurate records in tracking software.
• Inspect industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction
and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Inspect plumbing, electrical, mechanical and structural installations and a large variety of other
complex and routine building system elements; provide detailed list of deficiencies and ensure
correction of deficiencies at subsequent inspections.
• Examine plans and specifications of new construction, additions and alterations to residential,
commercial, and industrial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of applicable
construction codes, ordinances, and project plan document records.
• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public, contractors, and businesses in both
the office and in the field; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions.
• Coordinate with other departments on issuance of Certificates of Occupancy.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and education that
would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience: One – three years of responsible building inspector or technical construction experience
required
Education: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade required, supplemented by specialized training in
the building trades and/or code enforcement or a related field

Physical (noise, vibrations, heat/cold, weather, radiation, etc.): Exposed to construction at all stages,
especially early on; dust; other peoples; dirt; ice; insulation; uneven surfaces; loose debris; insulation;
bending/stooping while inspecting nail pattern; climbing on ladders and stairs; walking and balancing on
uneven construction sites; reaching above shoulder to check electric panel; pushing to see how strong a
material is; twisting while inspecting in restricted spaces.
Biological: Mold; toilets; dead animals; mildew; feces; blood; sewage.
Chemical: Varies depending on job: cleaning fluids; paint; lacquer; CO2; gasoline; smoke; chemicals;
exhaust; insulation.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED (long sleeves, gloves, hard hat, respirator,
ear plugs, safety glasses, steel toed shoes, etc.):
Steel toed shoes; safety glasses; hard hat; pants if needed.
