HealingTransitionsbreaksgroundinGreenville
TrilliumHealthResourcesbringingfacility,substanceuserecoveryprogramtoEasternNC
GREENVILLE,NC–RepresentativesfromHealingTransitionsandTrillium
HealthResourcesbrokegroundtodayforeasternNorthCarolina’sfirstlong‐
termresidentialfacilityservingresidentsexperiencingsubstanceaddictions.
The200‐bedfacilityisexpectedtoopenin2017.
“OurnumberoneunmetneedineasternNorthCarolinawasforalong‐term
residentialfacilityforpeopledealingwithaddictions,”saidLezaWainwright,
CEOofTrilliumHealthResources,beforetheceremonialturningofsoil.
WainwrightsaidthatTrilliumbeganexploringoptionstobringsuchafacility
totheareathreeyearsago.“HealingTransitionswasthemodelwewantedto
seereplicatedineasternNorthCarolina…We’rejustsotremendously
excitedtobehere.”
HealingTransitionsisaninnovativepeer‐basedsubstanceuserecovery
programthatbeganservicesinRaleighin2001.Trilliumpartneredwiththe
not‐for‐profitorganizationinordertobringafacilitytoeasternNorth
Carolina,wheretheneedisdire.Althoughalmost80,000individualsin
easternNorthCarolinahaveanalcoholorotherdrugaddiction,thereare
currentlyzerolong‐termresidentialfacilitiesforsubstanceusedisordersin
theregion.
“Thisisamodelthattakesindividuals(and)bringsthemtoaplaceoffinding
hopeforthemselves,givingthemopportunitiestoassumeresponsibilitynot
onlyfortheirownrecoverybutforthecareandconcernoftheirpeerswho
arejoiningthemintheprocessofrecovery,”saidChrisBudnick,Executive
DirectorofHealingTransitions.
HealingTransitionscostslessthan$50perday,perresident(atnochargeto
theindividual),whichismuchlowerthanthecostofanemergencyroom
visitorincarceration.Nationalratesofrecoveryvaryfrom30‐50%,but

graduatesfromtheHealingTransitionsprogrammaintainarecoveryrateof
70%oneyearaftercompletion.
“PittCountybackwhenIwasbornisverydifferentfromthewayPittCounty
istoday,”saidBethWard,chairofthePittCountyBoardofCommissioners.
“Andtheopportunitiesthatouryoungpeople,ourmiddle‐agedpeople,our
olderpeoplehavetofallintotherabbitholehasjustmultiplied,and
multipliedandmultiplied.Eveniftheyarenotlooking,thoseopportunities
findthem....SoIcan’ttellyouhowthrilledIamthatthecounty
commissionersandthePittCountygovernmentveryquicklyagreedto
donatethislandtoputthiswonderfulfacilityon.”

Long‐term,12‐stepbasedresidentialpeer‐runrecoveryprogram
Trillium’sresponsibilityistoconnectindividualsandfamiliestothehelp
theyneedwhentheyneedit.Aspartofthatresponsibility,Trilliumisalways
lookingforwaysinwhichwecaninvestinourcommunities.Healing
TransitionsofEasternNorthCarolinaisjustoneexampleofTrilliumtaking
additionalstepstohelpimprovethecommunitiesinwhichweoperate.
FundingforHealingTransitionsisaresultofsavingsfromoperatingasa
Medicaid1915(b)(c)Waiversite.
