Insert logo here Energy Awareness for Success Presented by Leeanne Timony MSc Environmental Engineer Nypro Healthcare Ireland • COMMUNICATION • ENCOURAGEMENT • ENGAGEMENT • LISTENING • SUPPORT Effective Awareness Campaign • Senior Management Commitment. At Nypro there is a Corporate directive (called the Energy Blitz) for energy reduction at all Nypro sites so the commitment comes from a very high level, • Awareness from the beginning – induction training, • Employee Involvement – suggestions and feedback options, • Effective communication within the site and with international sites (sharing success stories between sites), • Energy Management Team with a person from every department, • Resources; time, money, people, • Communicating objectives, targets and progress, • Positive feedback when targets are met. Ineffective Awareness Campaign • Lack of Senior Management commitment, • Failure to act/acknowledge employee suggestions, • Not understanding the target audience motivation triggers (cost saving versus environmental improvement), Nypro target audience is motivated by costs savings. • Not communicating progress on a regular basis, • Failing to acknowledge where improvements have been made, • Using awareness posters and material that are too general (site specific material is best), • Lack of follow up by the company. i.e. no investment in energy efficient equipment etc Energy Management Team • Managers from each department are on the team and bring updates to their departments on issues discussed at the EMT meetings • Without the support of the Management Team Energy Awareness would be a much more difficult job. Several people highlighting the importance of a topic is always more powerful than one person working in isolation • Department managers are useful in not only highlighting energy to employees but also in ensuring new strategies (WI’s etc) are followed. NYPRO IRELAND EMT - Monthly meetings: progress updates on energy related projects (eg. Compressed air surveys, energy efficient lighting), action items for ISO 50001 implementation, register of opportunities ideas, greater control of energy (new WI’s, procedures, training). Team includes: - General Manager • Engineering Manager • Environmental Manager • Quality Manager • Facilities Manager • Maintenance Manager Nypro Corporate Energy Awareness Campaign • Intranet: - All sites report energy and water consumption and cost on a monthly basis, - Energy Performance statistics across the different Nypro sectors (Consumer and Electronics, Healthcare and Packaging) are available on the intranet so all sites know where they are in relation to the rest of the sites, - Comparisons of Nypro Ireland to world wide sites can be very interesting to employees. Corporate Energy Blitz Supporting Materials • Technical Implementation Guides – What is the technology – Why is it being suggested – the benefit – How to do/use it – Checklist – Case Studies • Supporting Documents – Load Mapping & Audits • Incentives Document Nypro Corporate Energy Blitz Materials Energy Campaign Benefits Reduced kWh leads to: • Increased profitability • Increased growth capacity • Employee benefits -Profit Sharing & Stock Valuations • Reduced environmental impact -Greenhouse Gas Emissions • Greater customer satisfaction -Green Supply Chain Partner -Product Carbon Footprint Notice boards and employee involvement • It is necessary to have a specific point where regular energy statistics are available for all employees to view. • Notice boards should be located in well lit areas where all employees will pass. Preferably where there is room to stop and read the information presented. There is a notice board in each building in Nypro, • On our E&EHS notice board I update the monthly EPI for the site as a whole as well as progress updates on objectives and targets, • Comparing the efficiency of different areas can generate a healthy competitive interest, • Suggestion forms in reception allow employees to be part of the energy improvement process and can often be a great source of new ideas. SEAI have a range of awareness posters Reception – information leaflet for visitors and contractors MOTIVATION • Target audience motivator– cost savings/environmental benefits or both? • Give credit where credit is due otherwise employees will become de-motivated, • Senior management commitment helps with motivating employees also, having the General Manager state that Energy reduction is high on the company agenda carries a lot of weight, • Money talks! Nypro is a profit share company so reminding employees at profit share meetings and on notice boards that kWh savings = € savings = increased profits, is an effective motivator, • In non-profit share companies competition between the different areas of the factory with incentives for the most efficient at the end of the year generates interest, healthy competition and achieves results. ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard Company must make employees aware of: - conformity with the energy policy, procedures and with the requirements of EnMS, - roles, responsibilities and authorities in achieving the requirements of the EnMS, - the benefits of improved energy performance, - the impact, actual or potential, with respect to energy use and consumption, of their activities and how their activities and behaviour contribute to the achievement of energy objectives and targets, and the potential consequences of departure from specified procedures. Suggestions and Feedback • Give a number to each suggestion and add them to the Register of Opportunities, • Discuss suggestions with the person making the suggestion. If the suggestion is not feasible then explain why it’s not. Communicate, communicate, communicate – don’t leave anyone with the impression that their suggestion/feedback is not valued. • If the suggestion is feasible then enlist the help of the person who’s suggestion it is in implementing the action – or if possible delegate the responsibility for completing the action to them completely, • Welcome feedback from all employees at every level in the organisation. Feedback Form Nypro Results • During FY2011 (Financial Year period is July 2010 – June 2011) Nypro Ireland reduced it’s energy consumption by 3.71% compared to FY2010, • So far for FY2012, the EPI is below the baseline (an average of the EPI from FY2011 and FY2010. • Employees are actively engaged in adding to the Register of Opportunities, • Going forward into FY 2012 - new methods of energy awareness to maintain and continually improve awareness levels. • Accreditation audit to ISO 50001 is our aim for December 2011, gap analysis is complete and the outcome was very positive. 2.00 FY2010 1.50 FY2011 1.00 FY2012 0.50 baseline month ap ril m ay jun e ch m ar fe b de c jan au g Se pt Oc t no v y 0.00 jul Energy Performance Indicator FY 2010-FY2012 Energy Performance kWh vs (no of parts assembled + kg resin + outdoor temperature) Other Awareness Campaign Ideas • Energy Awareness Day • Charities donation linked to energy savings • Competitions for ‘most efficient area’ in the plant with prize for people working in the winning area • ‘Did you know’ regular interesting facts on climate change on notice boards (e.g * Energy saving light bulbs (CFLs) will use only 20% of the energy as normal light bulbs but will last 10 times as long), • Information sessions in canteens. Information Displays/Workshops • • • • Home energy efficiency workshop Home utility bill workshop Energy efficient lighting display Demonstration of energy efficient renewable technologies • Energy efficient self build presentations • SEAI Home Grant Schemes In Summary • Communicating at all stages, • Encouraging employee participation, involving people from every department in the EMT, • Being aware of target audience motivators, • Taking suggestions seriously, • Positive feedback when objectives are met, • Senior Management demonstrating commitment by providing resources and investing in energy efficiency, • Using fresh ideas to spread awareness, not the same method all the time.
