A Mathews Brothers Family Product
Orlando Ephraim (O.E.)Frost was responsible for the second
phase of Mathews Brothers growth. Brought on as general manager in 1898,
he was promoted to superintendent within the year. By 1905 he had purchased
the company from the Mathews family, and continually owned and operated
it for the next two and half decades. O.E. Frost liked a challenge, and his
reputation for producing superior products was legendary. It is for these
reasons we have named our wood product line after him.

a tradition of excellence
Spanning three centuries...
There’s something about wood that just warms our souls. No matter what the species, the natural
beauty of wood enhances any home, any style, anywhere.
Since the first Mathews Brothers window was made nearly 160 years ago, wood has been an integral
part of our culture. Oh, sure, now we have modern conveniences like electric lights instead of gas
lanterns, but we still offer putty glazed windows, hand glazed just like we did before the Civil War.
Today, we build on our history and experience with the expansion of our wood offering,
incorporating three distinct product collections, with their own unique advantages.
This product line is named for O.E. Frost, the second owner of Mathews Brothers Company, and
the man who built the largest 5-masted schooner ever made in Belfast, Maine.

With a classic look that stands the test of time…
Nothing says ‘colonial’ like the look of true putty-glazed windows. Unfortunately, putty glazing by hand is a
dying art. Except at Mathews Brothers. We’ve been making putty glazed windows since before the Civil War,
and today we still follow the same process we have for generations, using Mathews Amazing Glazing, our own
unique formulation for putty. Our putty glazed wood sash are single pane glass, and are available with a
Low-E energy panel insert.
Also available from the Colonial Collection are insulating glass units1 in wood sash or a maintenance-free
paint-ready composite sash. Choose from double-hung, picture or trapezoid units with or without grilles.
Whatever you choose, the Colonial Collection will give you the classic look you want with the energy efficiency
options you need.
IG units are not available as putty glazed.

Custom Wood Windows
One look at this window, and you’ll know
that this is not the typical wood product.
Made entirely by hand to your exact
specifications, and to our demanding
standards for quality and beauty.
Every component – from the frame
species to the sash species, from the sash
dimensions to the hardware type – is
chosen by you. You can also choose the
balance system you want, from the
traditional weight and chain, to tape,
the casing you want, and the finish you
want. You can even specify the muntin
bar style.
With the O.E. Frost Historic collection, we
return to our roots, providing builders and
remodelers with completely customized,
historically accurate wood windows.
Designed by you
What is it exactly that you’re looking for
in your new window? Well, odds are, we
can get it for you.
You see, every O.E. Frost Historic
window is made to your specific requirements, and to our demanding standards
for quality and beauty.
Virtually every aspect of these windows
are designed and specified by you.
First you choose your frame style...
Single-hung or double-hung? Stationary
or operable? Pre-hung, sash and balance,
or sash only? Weight and chain, weight
and cord, tape balance, or square edge/
no plough? With or without blindstop?
Did you know that Mathews Brothers is one of the last of the window companies
in the U.S. that still produces putty glazed true divided lite windows?
When is comes to the glass, your choices
are almost endless. Restoration glass or
“seedy” glass to give the historic look
you want, or Low-E with argon gas fill
for the performance you need. No matter
what your aesthetic or performance
requirements, we can meet them.
Then, you choose your sash options...
Do you want 1-3/4", 1-3/8", or some
other dimension? Standard or custom
stile & rail? The choice is up to you.
When you see your new window, you’ll
then understand why we say, “It’s not a
window, it’s a piece of furniture.”
Now, you just have to figure out what
type of muntin bar you want. Choose
among standard or custom profile, 5/8",
7/8" or custom width.
Next up is glass...(when it comes to
glass, here’s where we really shine!)
Clear? Restoration? How about #2
(also called “seedy”)? Obscure? Low-E?
Laminated? Tempered? Or did you have
something else in mind? No problem.
We can make it!
Time to choose the species of wood
for each part of the window. We offer
a variety of choices: Clear Pine, or
perhaps Mahogany, White Oak, Red Oak,
Cedar, Maple, Alder, Cherry, Lyptus,
Douglas Fir. Or, maybe you had something more exotic in mind? No problem.
We can get it!
Now, for your head casing...Flat? 908 or
custom? Sill nose...Standard? Historic?
One piece? Horns? 1-1/4"? 1-7/8"? Or,
perhaps, maybe something different?
No problem. We can make it!
National Fenestration Rating Council
The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a nonprofit, public/private organization created by
the window, door, and skylight industry. It is composed of manufacturers, suppliers, builders, architects
and designers, specifiers, code officials, utilities, and government agencies. The NFRC has developed a
window energy rating system based on whole product performance.
The NFRC label provides the only reliable way to determine the window energy properties and to compare
products. The NFRC label appears on all products certified to the NFRC standards and on all window, door,
and skylight products which are part of the ENERGY STAR® program. At this time, NFRC labels on window
units give ratings for U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and Visible Light Transmittance (VT).
ENERGY STAR®
Mathews Brothers is proud to offer our customers products that have earned the government’s
ENERGY STAR® label.
ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify the most energy-efficient
products. Learn more at www.energystar.gov.
You’re almost to the finish line...
Speaking of that, what finish would you
like on your sash? None? Primed exterior?
Primed interior? Primed both sides?
What about the sill finish? The frame
finish? The casing finish? The interior
stop finish?
Next, we need to talk about your
hardware choices. Would you like Bright
Brass, Antique Brass, Brushed Nickel or
Chrome, Oil Rubbed Bronze, or White?
How about the jamb depth?
We offer 4-9/16", 5-1/4", as well as
custom depths.
We’re almost done, so hang in there.
What screen frame are you interested in...
aluminum or wood? Wood? Okay, what
species? What about the screen mesh?
We offer fiberglass, aluminum or copper.
Finally, you can order a storm sash for
your O.E. Frost Historic window. Of
course, we’ll have to ask you a few
questions about that...
Forest Management and Green Building
Mathews Brothers has made a meaningful commitment to support and promote sustainable forestry
initiatives. We are active members of The Maine Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and
The Maine Forest Products Council.
Mathews Brothers Company is a local, family owned New England
company, and we’ve been making windows and doors for nearly
160 years. Over the course of that history, we’ve seen a lot of changes
in products, processes and technology. We’ve come to learn what’s
required for our region, in order to stand up to the severe weather
conditions that are the nature of our geography.
Every Mathews Brothers product is made right here in our Belfast, Maine
factory, by skilled and dedicated craftspeople who take well deserved
pride in every step of the manufacturing process; certain components
or finished units may, at times, be supplied by trusted manufacturing
partners. Expert design, precision engineering, premium materials and
superior workmanship are the cornerstones of every product that bears
our name. We take care every step of the way, from order to delivery.
Consistent with our Vision Statement,
the mathews brothers environmental
stewardship initiative (mbesi) is our
corporate commitment to protecting
and preserving our corner of the world.
With a long history of manufacturing
products from wood, it is in our nature
to want to protect this natural resource.
While this may be the “cause of the week” for many
companies, we have embraced environmental
stewardship since our beginning.
Additionally, we are committed to a “cradle to cradle”
approach to our manufacturing. We use only environmentally safe and healthy materials, which are designed to
use material that is easily recycled or composted.
Our products are made to conserve energy in their
manufacture and use. In addition, we installed an
efficient water recycler, reducing the amount of water
used to clean our glass.
permeates every aspect of Mathews
Brothers. It is our corporate commitment to maintaining the absolute
highest levels of customer satisfaction with our windows and door products, our people and our processes. Every employee
of Mathews Brothers Company proudly stands behind the products we make, and we are keenly aware of our individual
“points of impact” to our final customer.
WOW! Customer Service is the shorthand reminder of our Vision and Mission Statements: WOW! stands for Windows
On Wellness, and grew from questions about what is important to us: family, faith, friends, community, our nation, and
so on. As the list grew, it became apparent that these “circles of importance” could be grouped into personal, corporate,
community, and planet. These became our “Windows”, and the health or “Wellness” of these circles could be assessed from
both a physical and financial standpoint. Hence, the term “Windows on Wellness”.
Our Mission Statement is simple: Consistently Superior Customer Service, and this serves as our guide for our approach to
all customer interactions. We’ve been making windows and doors for a long time now, and we know that the work we’ll
do tomorrow rests on the foundation we built yesterday. And that’s the attitude that is shared by all of us here at
Mathews Brothers Company.
To maintain the highest standards of quality, we’re a member of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association,
an ENERGY STAR® partner, and participants in the National Fenestration Rating Council certification program.
