Schedule Thursdays - 4:30-5:20 pm Dates posted at http://www.are-cns.ksu.edu/seminars Room Union Forum Hall (or other as noted) Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should: 1. Gain a broad understanding of professional applications for the Architectural Engineering undergraduate degree. 2. Gain an understanding of the student/national professional societies and organizations affiliated with the Architectural Engineering industry and the personal and professional opportunities they provide for students and industry professionals. Evaluation Grading Scale: CR NC ≥ 4 of 4 ARE Seminars < 4 of 4 ARE Seminars Evaluation Values: A personal signature of attendance (or scan of student ID card) will be taken at each seminar to verify credit for that particular seminar. Failure to sign the attendance sheet (or scan your ID) will result in no credit for that seminar date. Students are required to attend four ARE seminars (one CNS seminar toward the required total of 4) each semester. Attendance Attendance is required at all four ARE seminars. However, students are allowed to use one CNS seminar as a make-up if they are unable to attend one of the ARE seminars. All other make-up shall be approved in advance by the seminar coordinator. Prompt attendance is required in this course, as it will be in a professional office. Sign-in will close promptly at 4:30pm, failure to have signed in by that time will result in loss of credit for that event. The instructor may consider emergencies or other issues on a case-by-case basis. Signing the attendance sheet for someone else is a violation of the K-State Honor System. 10 Page Research Paper (Required to make up each instance of a missed seminar) Students shall produce a 10-page typed (double-spaced with 1” margins) paper on a topic related to architectural engineering and approved in advance by the seminar coordinator. Students are to expand the topic they have selected as they see fit and as directed by the coordinator. This may include but is not limited to; producing a book report from current publications and periodical articles, producing a personal experience paper based on the topic, relating the topic to engineering advancements for society, combining topics and showing their relationship in the Arch/Eng/Const (AEC) market, etc. Papers are due by the last day of the semester to receive CR for the current semester. If papers are not received within the allotted time, a score of NC will be issued and result in a "hold" being placed on a student’s ability to enroll or modify courses on ISIS. Students submitting a paper for a previous semester can submit at any time in order to have the "hold" lifted from their account. One paper (or alternate make-up as determined by the instructor) is required for each missed seminar. If you experience any situations, in or out of class, that seem inappropriate or that make you uncomfortable, a list of resources and courses of action to assist you can be found on the College of Engineering web site at http://www.engg.ksu.edu/harassment-statement/. Statement Regarding Academic Honesty Kansas State University has an Honor and Integrity System based on personal integrity, which is presumed to be sufficient assurance that, in academic matters, one's work is performed honestly and without unauthorized assistance. Undergraduate and graduate students, by registration, acknowledge the jurisdiction of the Honor and Integrity System. The policies and procedures of the Honor and Integrity System apply to all full and part-time students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses on-campus, off-campus, and via distance learning. The honor and integrity system website can be reached via the following URL: www.ksu.edu/honor. A component vital to the Honor and Integrity System is the inclusion of the Honor Pledge which applies to all assignments, examinations, or other course work undertaken by students. The Honor Pledge is implied, whether or not it is stated: "On my honor, as a student, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work." A grade of XF can result from a breach of academic honesty. The F indicates failure in the course; the X indicates the reason is an Honor Pledge violation. Tobacco Use Policy The College of Engineering is designated a tobacco-free workplace and the use of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, is prohibited in any college building, facility, or vehicle. It is the responsibility of each college member (faculty, staff, or student) to adhere to and enforce the policy, and to inform visitors of this policy. If a student, faculty member or college employee continues to disregard the policy, he/she will be reported to the dean and may lose access privileges.
