graveyard, Marion Co., M0.
The Thomas Fox Probasco family consisting of himself, his wife,
Mary, their eldest son, Joseph, and Mary’s father, Joseph Strickler, left
Philadelphia the last of April or first of: May, 1836, for the West intending
to go to Galena, 111., where lead mines were being developed, but in St.
Louis they met Col. Wm. Muldrow, whom they had seen in Philadelphia in
1835 when he was soliciting funds and settlers for Marion City, Mo., his
then pet scheme. Col. Muldrow urged them to go up the Mississippi River
to Marion City where he assured Probasco he could find plenty work at his
trade of carpentering. They went to Marion City but heavy snows fell
during the winter of 1836, and spring thaws of 1837 made such high water
that most of the settlers sought higher ground near West Ely; among them
the Probasco family, where they lived until spring of 1842 when they moved
“upon the prairie” near Union Baptist Church where they made their home
until 1906. Children:
