The voice amplifier assembly is equipped with a green LED light on the top of the unit to indicate power on as well as low battery. When attached to the facepiece voicemitter, the amplifier electronically amplifies sound coming from the voicemitter. To conserve battery life, the EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER assembly features an automatic power OFF feature that shuts off the power after twenty minutes of inactivity. A Mounting Bracket specific to the model of full facepiece in use is required to mount the EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER to the facepiece. The Mounting Bracket is available separately. NOTE FACEPIECE MOUNTING BRACKET IS REQUIRED TO MOUNT THE VOICE AMPLIFIER ON THE SCOTT FULL FACEPIECE. Inspect the Voice Amplifier as part of the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION of the complete respirator. If any damage is found, do not use the equipment. WARNING INSPECT THE AMPLIFIER FOR EXTERIOR DAMAGE. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND, DO NOT USE THE AMPLIFIER. USE OF DAMAGED EQUIPMENT MAY CAUSE A MALFUNCTION WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Page 3 of 8 P/N 595105-01 Rev. B 11/07 BATTERY INSTALLATION WARNING THE USE OF BATTERIES OTHER THAN THOSE LISTED BELOW OR REPLACING BATTERIES IN AN AREA WHICH IS NOT KNOWN TO BE FREE OF FLAMMABLE GASES AND VAPORS MAY CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION AND MAY LEAD TO INJURY OR DEATH The EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER accessory requires three AAA batteries to be installed in the microphone/speaker unit. Use only three fresh alkaline batteries from the following list: – Eveready Energizer1 Industrial EN 92 – Duracell2 2400 Do not mix old and new batteries or batteries from different manufacturers. Use of rechargeable batteries is prohibited. Use of any other batteries except those listed will void the intrinsic safety listing of the EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER accessory. Install as follows: 1. The area must be known to be nonflammable and safe before opening the battery cover. 2. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery cover. Turn the battery cover screw counterclockwise. Lift open the hinged cover. 3. Inspect the contacts for corrosion or damage. If any discrepancy is found, do not use unit. Return to authorized SCOTT repair center for service. 4. Insert the batteries into the battery compartment. Be sure to check orientation of + and - polarity of batteries as marked on the outside of the battery compartment. See FIGURE 2. POLARITY MARKED ON HOUSING HERE FIGURE 2 5. Verify that the cover seal around the battery cover is clean and undamaged. 6. Close the battery cover and turn the screw clockwise to tighten until snug. Do not over tighten. LOW BATTERY ALERT Total battery life is dependent on conditions of use. The green LED on the microphone/speaker assembly will FLASH to indicate that the batteries are low when approximately two hours of operating time remain. WHEN THE LED IS FLASHING, CHANGE THE BATTERIES IMMEDIATELY. P/N 595105-01 Rev. B 11/07 Page 4 of 8 INSTALLATION Install the appropriate mounting bracket onto the voicemitter according to Bracket Mounting Instructions P/N 595107-01 supplied with the Mounting Bracket. Be sure the Mounting Bracket used is appropriate for the specific model SCOTT Full Facepiece. NOTE THE EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER WILL NOT FIT ON OLDER SCOTT MOUNTING BRACKETS P/N 804636-01 FOR THE AV-2000, OR P/N 805787-01 OR P/N 805787-02 FOR THE AV-3000. WARNING THE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE MUST BE PROPERLY INSTALLED SO THAT IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH THE OPERATION OR FIT OF THE FACEPIECE IN ANY WAY. IMPROPER INSTALLATION MAY RESULT IN A POOR FACEPIECE TO FACE FIT WHICH MAY EXPOSE THE USER OF THE RESPIRATOR TO THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE LEADING TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Install the EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER communications device as follows: 1. The amplifier is keyed so that it fits in the mounting bracket only one way. To attach the amplifier, hold it with the battery compartment cover facing the top right harness tab. Align the mount on the rear of the amplifier with the opening in the center of the audio accessory bracket and press in. 2. While pressing the amplifier in towards the side of the facepiece rotate the amplifier 1/4 turn counter clockwise. It will lock into place with a “click”. See FIGURE 3. ROTATE COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO LOCK FIGURE 3 Page 5 of 8 P/N 595105-01 Rev. B 11/07 USING THE AMPLIFIER 1. Check to make sure the amplifier is undamaged and is secured to the mounting bracket. Check to make sure the mounting bracket is firmly attached to the facepiece’s voicemitter housing before donning the facepiece. WARNING USE OF AN AMPLIFIER WITH A BROKEN OR DAMAGED CASE IN FLAMMABLE OR EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE MAY CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Don the facepiece by following the instructions supplied with the respirator. Always draw the facepiece firmly to the face to assure a proper seal. This is especially important when using the voice amplifier because the amplifier adds approximately six ounces to the weight of the facepiece. WARNING FAILURE TO DON FACEPIECE TIGHTLY AS INSTRUCTED MAY EXPOSE THE USER TO THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE THE RESPIRATOR IS INTENDED TO PROTECT AGAINST RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. 2. With facepiece donned and respirator in operation, depress the amplifier switch to turn the voice amplifier ON. Amplifier’s green LED will illuminate indicating amplifier has been activated. Should the LED fail to illuminate verify BOTH that the batteries are fresh AND that they are properly installed. If the green LED is FLASHING, the batteries are low and must be changed before use of the voice amplifier. See the BATTERY INSTALLATION section of this instruction. WARNING ALWAYS VERIFY THAT THE GREEN LED IS ILLUMINATED BEFORE USE OF THE VOICE AMPLIFIER. USE OF A DEFECTIVE AMPLIFIER OR ONE WITH IMPROPERLY INSTALLED, LOW, OR DEAD BATTERIES MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. 3. Since the amplifier extends out from the facepiece, use care to avoid striking the amplifier against surrounding objects. 4. Because the amplifier is physically mounted on the respirator facepiece, use care to prevent pulls or impacts on the amplifier from dislodging the respirator facepiece and exposing the respirator user to the atmosphere being protected against. 5. Use the voice amplifier with a normal speaking voice. Yelling or speaking too loudly may result in unintelligible voice transmission. 6. With the amplifier activated, the sound of air entering the facepiece will be amplified. P/N 595105-01 Rev. B 11/07 Page 6 of 8 USING THE AMPLIFIER CONTINUED... 7. After approximately twenty minutes of inactivity (no voice input) the EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER will automatically turn itself OFF. To reactivate, press the power switch. 8. A set of batteries will power the amplifier for approximately 20 hours. The LED on the microphone/speaker assembly will FLASH to indicate that the batteries are low when approximately two hours of operating time remain. WHEN THE LED IS FLASHING, CHANGE THE BATTERIES IMMEDIATELY. See the BATTERY INSTALLATION section of this instruction. REDUCING FEEDBACK Like all other amplifiers, the SCOTT EPIC VOICE AMPLIFIER is subject to acoustical feedback, such as a loud squalling sound, under certain conditions. To minimize feedback: 1. Activate the amplifier only after facepiece is donned and turn off the amplifier before doffing the facepiece. 2. If feedback occurs while the amplifier is in use, press the on/off button once and then turn on again. This may remedy condition. 3. If feedback occurs when using a cell phone of hand held radio, change the position of the phone or radio relative to the voice amplifier to reduce the feedback. 4. Make sure the mounting bracket is properly installed and fully seated against the mask. 5. Make sure that the face seal gasket on the bottom of the amplifier is installed and in good condition. 6. If feedback persists, turn off the amplifier. The amplifier should be checked before it is used again. REMOVING THE AMPLIFIER 1. Press locking spring lever outward with thumb to disengage the amplifier. 2. Once the lever is disengaged, rotate the amplifier 1/4 turn clockwise and lift outward to remove from facepiece. MAINTENANCE 1. Clean the voice amplifier assembly when necessary using a cloth dampened with a solution of water and a mild detergent. 2. When storing the amplifier for an extended period of time, batteries should be removed to prevent damage to the battery terminals. 3. Remove depleted batteries and replace with fresh batteries in a timely manner. Depleted batteries will cause damage if left in the Voice Amplifier for an extended period of time. 4. Except for the replacement of the batteries, no attempt shall be made to do maintenance or repairs beyond the scope of this instruction manual without proper training. Page 7 of 8 P/N 595105-01 Rev.
