Dottie practices in the dynamic business
and real estate departments of the firm.
Her practice covers a wide range of areas
from business and real estate financing and
transactions to everyday business advice involving strategic contract
negotiation, business strategies, human resources, corporate formation,
management and dissolution. Dottie has extensive experience in forming,
buying and selling businesses, whether small family owned businesses or
publicly traded companies. She frequently represents insurance companies
and agents in negotiations with the North Carolina Department of Insurance;
in addition, she is one of only two lawyers in North Carolina who have
extensive expertise in the rapidly expanding area of equine law.
Dottie heads the firm’s Equine Law Practice Group, serves on the Executive
Committee and Board of Directors for the North Carolina Horse Council and is
the Chair of the Equine Law Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s
Animal Law Committee. Dottie has a great passion for working with horse
owners, trainers, breeders and insurers and assists them with legal issues
related to horses and the unique circumstances and liabilities surrounding
their use, care and transfer.

Experience Highlights
Regularly represents NC business owners (veterinarians, daycare owners, dentists,
insurance companies, restaurant owners, equestrians, etc.) in connection with
their sale or purchase of NC businesses and property; successfully negotiating
terms and preparing all closing documentation to finalize transactions.
Represents multiple lenders and property owners in connection with complex
real estate title defects (including boundary disputes, lien priority disputes,
easement disputes and mineral rights disputes), negotiating successful resolutions
of these concerns, including successfully appearing before the NC Court of
Appeals to defeat a competing lender’s request for the Court to impose the
remedy of equitable subrogation.
