BETHLEHEM BOOKS, as many of you know, is a small, home-grown
publishing company dedicated to restoring to children and families a treasury
of wholesome, character-building literature. More than a business, our
work springs from the heart of the Bethlehem Community of Benedictine
Oblates, a lay group of families and single people which began in 1971. Years of
educating our children at home had made us aware of the wealth of wonderful
children’s books written in the first three-quarters of the twentieth century—
conscious also that many of these titles were fast disappearing from library
shelves. Happily, this awareness was able to take a concrete form. In 1992,
Bethlehem Books, with its aim to reprint “Literature to Feed the Imagination,”
came into being in Vancouver, Washington.
Now, more than twenty years later, amidst all the ups and downs of
family and community life, we are pleased to be yet providing good literature
for children—of all ages! These days, we frequently meet young adults who
enthusiastically respond to a display of Bethlehem Books by exclaiming, “I
grew up on these books!” Some of these folks are in the process of building a
Bethlehem Books library for their own young families. Many things continue
to change in the world around us, but the love of a good story—to read alone
or aloud to others— thankfully endures.
Since our goal has always been to get out as much good family reading
as we could afford, several years ago we began exploring the world of digital
books. We worked first to bring out eVersions, electronic editions of titles
we already had in print (still an ongoing process). Next, we developed a list
of eStacks titles, e-books available as digital-only versions, which can be
purchased, for the most part, exclusively on our website. A number of brandnew eStacks stories are in the works, to be added to the collection of more
than thirty currently offered. Though we ourselves like best to hold and
turn the pages of a print book, we have been pleased to offer our readers—
especially our international ones—more hours of reading enjoyment through
the electronic format.
A few of our eStacks titles are about to change status from being digitalonly to becoming available as print books. Good Old Archibald by Ethelyn
Parkinson and Fear in the Forest by Cateau de Leeuw will shortly be off to
the printers. Judith Lankester by Marjorie Hill Allee and On the Edge of the
Fjord by Alta Halverson Seymour will be next. The Cottage at Bantry Bay
by Hilda van Stockum is also about to rejoin its companions (Francie on the
Run and Pegeen) as a print book. These titles will all, of course, continue to
be found in the electronic format, though now as Bethlehem Books eVersions.
Please let us know if you have a favorite eStacks title that you’d like to see in
print book form.
The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow was the first of the more than
100 print books we have published over the years (many of which are still in
print). It is still going strong, and is now joined by our newest offering: Door
to the North by Elizabeth Coatsworth, another tale which begins in the cold
Nordic lands.
Happy reading to our friends and readers from all of us at Bethlehem Books!

Fear in the Forest

Parkinson
Illustrated by
Mary Stevens
In this amusing
story—that is both
slightly vintage and
completely timeless— good old
Ethelyn Parkinson
Ralph Jackson has
deserted Brookfield
School (his family
has had to move to another city) just four weeks
before the “picnic day” baseball game against the
Lawson Lions. His buddies Trent, Wilmer and
Harley are not happy, but they get only gleeful
heckling, rather than sympathy from classmates
Wonderful Wanda, Gorgeous Glenora and Susie
Scott. The dismal situation is not improved by
the arrival of a new boy, Archibald Brewster,
who wears a suit and tie and is taken to and from
school by a chauffeur—he is NOT the answer to
the Brookfield Bumblebees’ prayers. However,
the boys, especially Trent, cannot get rid of Archibald—he is there every time they turn around.
He seems to be particularly captivated by Trent’s
offbeat and lovable family made up of dad, mom
and seven sons. So begin four rather harrowing
weeks in which the Brookfield Bumblebees have
the opportunity to discover that things are truly
not always what they seem to be. Written by an
accomplished storyteller, this touching and humorous tale is a great family read-aloud.

Fear in the
Forest
by Cateau de
Leeuw
Illustrated
by Leonard
Vosburgh
There was only one
way to make Ohio
territory safe for the
settlers, and that was
Cateau de Leeuw
to defeat the Indians.
In the early 1790’s,
both General Harmar
and General St. Clair’s troops had tried and tragically failed, and now fear was running rampant
along the Ohio Territory frontier. This nightmare
anxiety was bigger than life for twelve-year-old
Daniel, who had lost his father in an Indian raid.
Now, three years later, finding himself an unwanted burden to the family who had taken him
in, a visit from a stranger leads Daniel to make
a man-sized decision. Major General Anthony
Wayne—Mad Anthony—hopes to succeed where
the others had not, and to do this he has instituted a series of forts. It takes all Daniel’s courage
to leave his foster family in hopes of getting work
with one of the pack-horse brigades, the supply life-lines for the forts and for the U.S. troops
defending the settlers. Hired by packer Josiah
Gregg, Daniel is befriended by the chief’s fourteen-year-old son, Amos, and later, by the whole
Gregg family. Despite his brave encounters with
bears, ruffians, and the dangers faced daily by the
supply train, Daniel’s fear still plagues him. Is he
a coward? What will it take to have that question
settled once and for all?

Judith Lankester
Judith
Lankester
On the Edge of the Fjord
by Marjorie Hill
Allee
Illustrated by
Hattie Longstreet
Price
Judith Lankester,
15 years old, and
raised in the luxury
of her grandmother’s
Marjorie Hill Allee
Virginia plantation,
has made the arduous journey with her
widowed mother and her seven sisters to the
home of her grandparents in Indiana. Though
her mother, Charity, had married away from the
Quaker lifestyle, she had always maintained her
faith and convictions. After her husband’s death,
she freed his slaves, settled them on their own
land and used the last of the family’s resources
to travel to Indiana. Welcomed in Grandfather
Halloway’s home, Charity hopes to set up her
loom and begin weaving cloth to sell. The older
girls—all except for Judith—also wish to help.
The rawness of the pioneer dwellings and way of
life offend Judith’s love of beauty and refinement.
She wants to return to the silk and elegance of
her grandmother’s home. Except for her gift with
young children and skill in fine sewing, she has
nothing to contribute to their new way of life. At
Grandfather Halloway’s suggestion, she goes to
live with the Huff family to help out, but also to
learn practical household skills. It is in this kindly
crucible that Judith must come to terms with
herself, with her family’s Quaker faith and convictions—especially on the subject of slavery—
and of where, and with whom, she will spend her
future years. This warm, believable tale about
the meaning of freedom and its responsibility is
vividly set against the background of social and
industrial change in the 1840’s—in the period
leading up to the American Civil War.

On the
Edge of
the Fjord
by Alta
Halverson
Seymour
No one dreamed
that the Nazis would
ever bother Valcos,
the sleepy little
Norwegian fishing
Alta Halverson Seymour
village on the edge
of the deep fjord.
However, its happy,
carefree life ended when Nazi officers quartered
themselves in the Engeland home with the intention of securing Captain Engeland’s influential
help. Petra Engeland, only fourteen, had good
reason then to transfer her resourcefulness in
mischief to grimmer tasks involving life or death,
and her first undertaking was to warn her father,
still away with the larger of the fishing boats, of
the trap awaiting him. Against a background of
mountains, caves and fjords, Petra and her impetuous brother Martin—with numerous other
Norwegians, young and old—take part in daring
schemes right under the noses of the occupying
forces. Published before WWII was at an end,
this tale retains its sense of immediacy and courage in the face of great adversity.

Sea Captain from
Salem
by Leonard Wibberley
Peter’s father, John Treegate, and his foster
father, the Maclaren of Spey, are jealous and
distrustful of each other and are making
seemingly impossible and irreconcilable demands of Peter. In the resultant struggle, Peter
strives to be true to both men while also trying to discern
and be faithful to his own calling. This relational dilemma is
powerfully played out in the midst of the slow, chaotic course
of the war with the Redcoats; a war in which the reader is
shown the cruelty and the decency to be found on both sides.
Second book in Treegate Series.
The struggling new nation’s need for help
sends Benjamin Franklin to Paris to seek an
alliance with France. How can he convince
the French that the American battle is worth joining? The
surprising answer to his dilemma appears in the unlikely

Manly. Franklin puts Peace of God in command of the sloop

waters. Third book in Treegate Series.

The Reb and the
Redcoats
by Constance Savery
A view of the Revolutionary War is shown
through a British family to whom a young
American prisoner-of-war has been entrusted. The children—the “redcoats”—forge a
friendship with the “Reb,” and inadvertently get pulled along
in his fierce determination to escape. Their uncle, embittered
by the unjust death of a friend fighting in America, makes
things as difficult as possible for the young rebel—until
something unexpected is learned. A truce is joined—one
that cannot quite quell the Reb’s intense desire to escape and
rejoin his comrades across the sea.

by Ann Lawrence
This entertaining tale is set in ancient Britain,
in an isolated Roman town cut off from the
collapse of the Empire. The primary concerns
for most of Iscium’s senators and officials are
to keep a low profile with the neighboring barbarians and to
renovate the city baths. When invasion suddenly threatens,
a mysterious, one-eyed merchant suggests a plan—involving
two talking ravens and the Hallelujah Chorus! Life is never
again the same, for the Romans or for their invaders. A wonderfully zany mix of history, humor and the miraculous.

Biographical Stories
Once Upon a Time
Saints
by Ethel Pochocki
Illustrated by Tom Matt
“These stories,” the author explains, “are
meant to show human and lovable people
whose mysterious passion for God led them into preposterous escapades.” With an eye toward the taste of a child for
concrete detail and with no apologies for “the embroidery of
legend,” Ethel Pochocki demonstrates her inimitable gift for
crafting tales as edifying as they are entertaining.

Saints and Heroes
by Ethel Pochocki
Ethel Pochocki has selected a mixture
for older youth of “soldiers and sailors,
kings and queens, doctors, lawyers, beggars, thieves, poets, diplomats, fools and
cranks,” and she has told their stories in
her characteristic lively style. She shows
how brave and generous such people were;
how they challenged the society they lived in; and how they
have since become light-bearers for future generations.

My Heart Lies South:
The Story of My
Mexican Marriage
By Elizabeth Borton de Treviño
When a thoroughly-modern American lady
journalist of the 1930’s becomes a Mexican
senora in old-fashioned Monterrey, anything
might happen—and does! In this autobiographical account,
Elizabeth de Treviño finds herself—sometimes hilariously—
coping with servants, daily food allowances, bargaining and
dramatic Latin emotions. The author, winner of the Newbery Award (for I, Juan de Pareja), succeeds in painting an
unforgettable picture of faith and love, displayed against the
backdrop of a lively, but benevolent, collision of cultures.

Happy Times in Noisy
Village
by Astrid Lindgren
Illustrated by Ilon Wikland
Translated by Florence Lamborn
The lively children of Noisy Village—three farms clumped
together in rural Sweden—make the place live up to its name.
A large linden tree grows between Middle (where storyteller,
Lisa, lives) and South Farms, making visiting between the
houses easy. Even the girls will sometimes climb through its
branches, like the night they all waited for Olaf to go to sleep
so that they could pull out his loose tooth without his knowing it! This is only one of many escapades likely to make
readers young and old wish they could step right into the
pages of this little book and find themselves—well, maybe in
a linden tree! Join the fun in this companion volume to The
Children of Noisy Village (published by Viking Penguin).

A Day on Skates
by Hilda van Stockum
Illustrated by the Author
“What a wonderful evening I had,
snug in my warm house, reading
about these Dutch children on
skates! I skated with this class and their teacher along canals
and other waterways past farms and a town. I lived briefly in
a simpler time (the 1930’s) with some real people, and the day
will long live in my memory. For me, it would have been a
great day even if nothing had happened. But something did.
There is suspense and adventure enough for readers who like
these in their stories.”

The Kitchen Madonna
by Rumer Godden
Illustrated by Lydia Halverson
Marta, who comes from the Polish Ukraine,
with her thick accent, her good cooking,
and her stories, is the anchor of the house
for Gregory and his sister Janet. Mother and
father, both busy architects, are gone all day and sometimes
at night. Marta is always there; and the children, sensing
her unhappiness, are afraid she will want to go away. When
they find out that she misses having a “good place” in the
kitchen—where the image of the Madonna and Child bring
warmth and blessing—Gregory and Janet set out on what
may well be an impossible quest. However, with each new
difficulty, Gregory discovers an unexpected measure of faith
and resourcefulness welling up within himself. Master storyteller Rumer Godden deftly brings to life a portrait of a lonely
boy discovering the power of love.

The Miracle of Saint
Nicholas
by Gloria Whelan
Illustrated by Judith Brown
It was the day before Christmas in a small
Russian village. Alexi’s babushka was telling him what Christmas was like in the church of St. Nicholas when she was a
girl—before the soldiers came. Alexi had many questions,
“Why can’t we celebrate Christmas tomorrow in St. Nicholas?” Babushka replied that it would take a miracle. Well,
Alexi had heard enough. If there truly was such a thing as a
miracle, why couldn’t it happen here?
