COURSE DESCRIPTION/INSTRUCTORS STATEMENT
PSYC1001P/Q/Y/Z will introduce you to psychology through the building blocks of
brain mechanisms, sensation, perception, learning, memory, & cognition. This
will prepare us to tackle some of the more observable elements of human
behavior in PSYC1002.
Although the content is identical to face-to-face Intro Psych courses offered by
this instructor, the format of PSYC1001P/Q/Y/Z is online with no physical
classroom or required meeting times. Unlike a traditional face-to-face course,
you determine when to view the video Modules, test yourself with Quizzes, and
when you take Exams.
Depending on when you enrol, you will be assigned to one of PSYC1001P or Q or Y
or Z. These are called Flex Term courses because you may enrol at any time and
depending on your time of enrolment you may have up to 2 consecutive
semesters to complete it. You may enrol in Flex Term courses only if you are a
Carleton University Special Student and you were previously in an Open Access
course. Details are provided at http://carleton.ca/psychology/online-flexterm/
ABOUT TAKING AN ONLINE COURSE
This is a totally self-paced, on-demand online course. Therefore, you should be a
self-starter if you hope to succeed. If you cannot manage your time DO NOT TAKE
THIS COURSE, please enrol in a face-to-face classroom version of Intro Psych!
Without the pressure of having to attend classes, people procrastinate. To
succeed, pre-plan time in your weekly schedule for working on this course. Then,
just take the small step of getting started – after that first step, it gets easier.
At the same time, if you are really busy, then PSYC1001P/Q/Y/Z is made for you.
This online course allows flexibility around your other life commitments and some
exceptional students have been able to finish it successfully in as little as a couple
of weeks
EVALUATION
There are four multiple-choice exams in this course. Exam 1 is worth 14% and will
be taken after you have completed Chapters 0, 1, and 2. Exam 2 is worth 19% and
will be taken after you have completed Chapters 3 and 4. Exam 3 is worth 19%
and will be taken after you have completed Chapters 5 and 6. Exam 4 is worth
19% and will be taken after you have completed Chapters 7 and 8. All four exams
will include approximately 60% of material drawn from both the text and lectures;
30% that is presented in the text only; and 10% that is in the lecture only. All four
exams will be non-cumulative.
Each Chapter is divided into 6 to 9 video Modules. Each Module has a self-test
question that will help you determine if you understand the material. Self-tests
are not graded. After each Chapter there is a Quiz that is worth 2%. Since there
are 8 Chapters the Quizzes are worth a total of 16%. There is also a “Chapter 0”
on introductory material that has a Quiz worth 4%. In addition, there are Open
Questions scattered through the video Modules and collected in a document you
can download from the course website. Pick one Open Question and provide a
400-1000 word written answer. The Open Question is worth 5%. Finally, you
have 4% available for Research Participation--participating in research conducted
by members of Carleton’s Department of Psychology. There is also a Written
Alternative to Research Participation (WARP) that asks you to use online library
resources to find a particular research paper and summarize it. You can combine
Research Participation with WARP but you can only collect up to 4% of your final
grade from any combination of the two.
